PLEASE HELP! Sign this petition.
The Maryland Health Secretary has halted an ongoing, privately-funded, inpatient study of a medical ketogenic diet for treating schizophrenia for no clear reason.
People with schizophrenia deserve better treatments.
Guess who walked 100 miles this week ???
3 1/2 years ago I had surgery for cervical myelopathy. My legs felt heavy and disconnected from my body. I could barely stand. I was told surgery might only prevent it from worsening. So thankful and blessed.
So I wanted to see if I could walk 13.1 miles 3 days in a row. 39 miles in 3 days. Proud to say I could. 3 1/2 years ago I could barely walk around the block. Always trying to beat my yesterday.
Getting in daily exercise helps control my schizophrenia. If I don't work out my ketones will drop and my glucose will rise.
Today's workout:
Walk to the gym-2 miles
1 hour leg weights/ tire step ups
Walked home from the gym-2 miles
It’s National Bikini 👙 Day 2024
Ha ha ha and this was probably the last time I got to sunbathe properly 😏😏😏😏May 😏
Let’s see your bikinis 👙👙👙👙👙👙

In 2020 I eliminated processed foods and started eating a low carb/low sugar diet. I started walking some. 8 months later I went with a friend to New York. Up until that point I was an agoraphobic schizophrenic with crippling anxiety. Today you wouldn’t recognize me.
This is what I do when I have a bad keto mojo reading (low ketones and a high glucose).
-20 hour fast
-A long walk or a long workout
- increase my fats
- control my pain
Sometimes pain from my 4" hernia can negatively effect therapeutic ketosis for my schizophrenia.
16 years on antipsychotic meds that left me with terrible anxiety (taking 5 zanex a day to cope), agoraphobia, drug induced parkinsonism, along with unhealthy coping strategies and massive weight gain. I found hope in the ketogenic diet and metabolic therapies. No comparison.
Now I can say I walked 18.2 miles. Healthy eating and exercise have been my top priority for 3 1/2 years. The consequences of not doing these things means my schizophrenia wins.
-Keto has the power to heal.
I walked 26.2 miles today. Man I’m beat! I can’t believe I actually did legs today at the gym also. I just put my sticker on my car today. Walking it still counts, right?
You can improve schizophrenia using a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting and daily exercise. I know this because my antipsychotic meds no longer work for me. I do this instead with better results. I recommend getting a dietitian that specializes in metabolic psychiatry.
I walked to the gym today and after my workout my glucose started to spike. I forgot my snack which helps with this so I picked up some pepperoni. This worked really well and dropped my glucose 20 points. I walked home knowing my mental health wouldn't suffer. Best brands?
After just 15 minutes of grounding my glucose dropped 7 points. That’s a huge win in my battle against schizophrenia. I’m sure the more I practice this ritual the more improvements I’ll see.
Tapering antipsychotics can be hard. Lowering my antipsychotic will drop my glucose almost immediately but after a week and a half I’ll start to experience withdrawal symptoms even while doing only 5 mg drops. Exercise and daily walks help. Any other suggestions?
I’m so happy! I just bought some new tennis shoes. They fit my wide foot and have plenty of room in the toe box. I walked 26 miles in them in 2 days without getting blisters. They’re breathable too. I think I’m in love. I needed an upgrade as I walked 258 miles last month.
Here's my 3rd attempt at running after not running for almost 30 years. Certainly not the pace I did back in high school but if you want to improve on something you must practice.
Today’s activities:
1 mile run
1 hour of leg weights
Daily Exercise improves my schizophrenia.
Things I do daily:
Grounding
Weights/ gym
Walking/ cardio
Eat a therapeutic ketogenic diet of only 20 net carbs.
And most importantly- I monitor my glucose with my continuous glucose monitor or my keto mojo. If my glucose is higher than 100 I’ll have symptoms.
Great News!!!!!!!
My son took a nutrition class last fall at George Mason University and they spoke about the benefits of implementing a ketogenic diet for mental health.
My Antipsychotic Side Effects:
A flat expressionless face while being happy
Urinary Incontinence
Swallowing difficulties
Nasal congestion
Constipation
Slow or fast heartbeat
Belching
Skin rashes
Weight gain/ sedation
My fix: Metabolic therapies
The first picture was taken in 2018. Then I started a low carb & low sugar diet with intermittent fasting. The second picture was taken in 2023. The keto diet unknowingly helped heal me physically and mentally. I like the fact that I’m unrecognizable today. Still learning
I enjoyed running in high school. I tried it at 30 and failed miserably. I couldn't walk right for a month. Recently in May I ran 2 miles in 30:51 minutes. Today I made my second attempt at 47 and I shaved 3 minutes off my time. Start slowly and keep challenging yourself.
@DoctorTro
2020- I went low carb and low sugar
2021- I added intermittent fasting
2024- I started keto for my schizophrenia
As of today I have kept off over 100 pounds and have seen massive improvements in my mental health. Antipsychotics never improved me as much as metabolic therapies
As I’m trying to taper off my antipsychotic meds I’ve noticed withdrawal symptoms. Especially shaking and increased agitation which I’m sure spikes my glucose by spiking my cortisol. Grounding might really help with this, so I’m going to give it a try.
@CaryKelly11
In my experience with drug induced parkinsonism (from antipsychotics), drugs are anything but safe. Natural ways seem way safer to me. I was offered weight loss drugs in the past and I declined and did it through diet and exercise. I used to weigh 273 pounds.
I'm not anti psychiatry.
Im pro getting better.
Antipsychotics and metformin may be useful in the beginning to help stabilize someone but long term usage comes with risks. Metabolic therapies can help.
Intermittent fasting, the ketogenic diet and exercise.
Here’s why I started turning my shower cold at the end. I’m trying out cold exposure therapy as a means to help drop my glucose, burn fat, and reset my vagus nerve. For me a lower glucose = less schizophrenia symptoms. (Taking a hot bath has the opposite effect.)
Things I do to minimize the “Dawn Effect.”
-Which can bring about my mental health symptoms.
1- Eat less carbs at dinner. I eat most of my 20 net carbs earlier in the day.
2-Exercise in the morning to burn off extra glucose.
3- Morning Sunlight and Grounding.
@iam_emilyanne
My story is like yours. When I wasn’t feeling great I switched doctors. My new doctor told me the less medication I was on the better off I’d be. He was right.
If I eat a strawberry without balancing it with the proper fats I'll have symptoms of my schizophrenia. My dietician recommended my plates have the following ratios:
50% fat
25% protein
25% carbs
And guess what?? This actually works!!
Look for a Metabolic Psychiatry Dietitian
It looks like gratitude can lower your cortisol which will in turn reduce your glucose and improve your mental health. I have so much to be thankful for. I need to practice this more.
Imagine a free habit that can be done in 2 minutes a day that provides:
•Less Anxiety
•Less Depression
•Better Metabolism
•Increased Immunity
•Boosted Metabolism
Sound too good to be true?
It’s not.
I’ll explain.
THREAD
I use a keto mojo reader to monitor my glucose and ketones. I always feel best when my ketones are above a 1 and my glucose is below 100. It's imperative for me to know my levels as this allows me to control my schizophrenia.
I am one of the 2 million this directly impacts living with schizophrenia and I’m absolutely appalled that this is taking place in America. Especially since my meds fail to treat my symptoms. Sounds like the Maryland health dept. just doesn’t care.
If I eat the wrong foods I’ll be symptomatic with my schizophrenia. Realizing that I’m carb and sugar sensitive helped me tremendously. Everyone suffering needs access to a diet that can eliminate their symptoms. The ketogenic diet provides relief for me.
How ironic! Patients SHOULD have to sign an informed consent waiver to eat the carb-laden, symptom-exacerbating garbage currently served in facilities. Inpatient settings of the future will (🤞) offer & recommend keto for metabolic brain dysfunction/ psychiatric conditions.
My schizophrenia symptoms present when my glucose levels rise above 100. My antipsychotic meds keep my glucose elevated at 99. This isn't fair to patients. Lowering my antipsychotic meds has given the ketogenic diet a chance to work and now I'm finally in therapeutic ranges.
As I’ve been tapering my antipsychotics I’ve noticed increased agitation which brings increased cortisol levels. Maybe I just need to laugh more. I’ll be giving this a try.
A compilation of data from 8 studies found that laughter led to a 32% reduction in cortisol levels.
If this made you lol, please hit me back in this thread with something funny that I've not seen or heard before.
@NewDawn7411
3 1/2 years ago I weighed 273. I lost over 100 pounds. I didn’t use weight loss drugs. I did it through diet and exercise. I also did it despite being on an antipsychotic medication which is known to cause weight gain.
@BiggestComeback
13 years on antipsychotics and never saw an improvement in my illness. I went low carb and low sugar and finally saw improvement in my mental health and needed to reduce my antipsychotic meds. Previously I lost 80 pounds with exercise and saw no mental health improvements
Trouble sleeping? Then you might not be getting the benefits of Autophagy. Walking for 45 minutes or intermittent fasting are both great ways to reap those benefits on sleepless nights. This works for me but it might not be safe for you. Always check with your doctor first.
When you have had cervical myelopathy and then later realized that your antidepressants were perhaps masking how serious things had gotten. Without pain how do you even know there is a problem? By the time I sought care they wanted me to have surgery within a month.
Did you know that 20 % of the homeless population are schizophrenic. Thank you Maryland department of health for canceling a study that might improve things for a vulnerable population. Please sign the petition pinned to my profile to demand change.
For me to see improvements in my schizophrenia and anxiety it meant having to change the brand of toothpaste that I usually buy. The Charlie Foundation has a list of hygiene products that are low/no carbs. I guess you could say I’m just a little carb sensitive.
@ChrisPalmerMD
I’ve had numerous serious health issues that worsened my schizophrenia only to be dismissed by doctors when I sought help. They diagnosed me as crazy because I couldn’t possibly have anything other than schizophrenia. Well they were wrong.
Memory issues that were due to the progression of my schizophrenia are reversing. At one time I couldn’t even tell you my age if you asked. Another positive outcome from starting a therapeutic ketogenic diet. Thankful I’m not who I used to be.
When your psychiatrist is dumbfounded by the complete turnaround in your health and behavior and curiously asks you what you’re doing differently. It’s a little thing called ketosis. Metabolic therapies: ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting and exercise.
@Metabolic_Mind
I’ve lost 80 pounds through exercise with no improvements to my schizophrenia before . I’ve also lost 137 pounds using metabolic therapies and had significant improvements in my schizophrenia that necessitated a reduction in my antipsychotics.
I’d be lost without the dietary changes I’ve made as a means to treat my schizophrenia. My meds no longer work. Please stand with me by signing this petition to allow a dietary clinical trial to continue. Recently it was shut down without cause. Do what’s right sign and share

So glad this research is being conducted. The results don’t surprise me in the least. I set out to change my health 3 1/2 years ago and it somehow improved my schizophrenia for the first time since being put on psychiatric meds in 2008.
Did you know that glucose and ketones have an inverse relationship. When my glucose is elevated that usually means my ketones are low. Elevations of my glucose above 100 usually mean I’ll become symptomatic unfortunately.
If your mental health drug has a side effect of metabolic syndrome your condition probably won’t improve if you take the drug long term. That’s where metabolic therapies can help. I’m speaking from personal experience. Prior to starting you should speak to a doctor/ dietitian.
@DoctorTro
That explains a ton. I know someone that was doing weight watchers and also started taking ozempic. I did Jenny years ago and I previously lost 80 pounds with it but I never felt healthy. I only felt better eliminating carbs and sugars and going keto.
I’ve had to switch brands of supplements in the past because their ingredients either contained carbs or seed oils. When you’re on a 20 net carb a day diet sometimes it’s the little things that can trip you up and put you over your daily limit.
@ChrisPalmerMD
I definitely saw an improvement in my schizophrenia when I started to loose weight. I’m sure that contributed to me being able to lower my dosage of antipsychotic medication for the first time ever. Which is remarkable considering I’ve been on antipsychotics since 2008.
Ive heard that mct oil takes about a 1/2 an hour for your body to metabolize it. Personally I have taken mct oil and then 1/2 an hour later my jaw physically unclenched and my anxiety improved. I like to mix 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter with 1 tablespoon of mct oil.
@iam_emilyanne
I agree I know someone that goes to Europe and they always loose weight also. It’s because every product in America has hidden carbs or sugars in it. So you go to make tacos and pick up a seasoning packet—- yup carbs and sugars in even spices.
@BiggestComeback
I wish the ketogenic diet had been offered as a treatment option when I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2008. I probably would have lived a very different life. Halting research will only devastate countless lives.
Often times people living with schizophrenia are incapacitated due to their illness or their medications. Many times they cannot effectively advocate for themselves. Im thankful that people are standing up for what is right. I have schizophrenia and I use the ketogenic diet.
I signed this petition. Please consider doing the same (it takes 20 seconds). (“the Department of Health’s own 16-week review of the study found no ethical or safety issues and the study is overseen by three regulatory and oversight boards.”)
I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2008 and suffered needlessly for many years until accidentally stumbling upon metabolic therapies like the ketogenic diet. This is a heartbreaking decision to halt forward progress in mental health care!
As shared here by Laura Herrera Scott, “leave no one behind”. So why, Secretary Scott, would you decide to leave millions behind by pausing a legitimate and innovative research study aimed to help your state and community?
@MDHealthDept
@ChrisPalmerMD
The Charlie Foundation has keto recipes that were designed for those implementing a therapeutic ketogenic diet for mental health or epilepsy. Please also consult with a dietitian trained in metabolic psychiatry.
What does antipsychotic induced Parkinsonism sounds like when you're TRYING to eat? There's no shortage of choking and coughing. Every bite felt like I was dying. Going keto improved this for me. Video was taken in 2020.
Health department not allowing a dietary study that could change countless lives. But they’ll allow the same hospital to conduct Pharmaceutical studies. I’ve personally suffered terrible side effects like drug induced Parkinsonism. This is unacceptable.
For anyone who might be interested in my story. Here’s a podcast I did recently. Antipsychotic medications never improved my schizophrenia quite like metabolic therapies did.
Who says schizophrenia can't be controlled outside of medication?
My guest finally reached her last straw when her anti schizophrenia medications made her so obese that she needed operations on both her knees, at 273 pounds (124 kg).

The vast majority of mental health patients often deal with issues of chronic pain. Unfortunately pain will raise your glucose but fixing the source of your chronic pain can actually improve your mental health.
When my glucose is lower than 100 my symptoms go away. Metabolic therapies include the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting and exercise. All of which help me achieve lower glucose levels.
@Fithappenspro
I walked 26 miles recently and the last 2 miles I walked in a torrential downpour. My shoes were completely waterlogged and the rain felt like stinging pellets against my skin. I stopped making excuses 3 1/2 years ago and never looked back. Let’s go!
@sulmoney
Not everyone wants to get metabolic syndrome from antipsychotic meds. Some patients prefer no side effects to deal with and a natural therapy
@NoCarbsNation
I’m 47 and I started my low carb low sugar diet 3 1/2 years ago. Currently Im doing keto. What you feed yourself can hurt or heal you. Food is the best medicine always. Congratulations!
@IainCampbellPhD
He probably will need to continue on the glp-1 meds or start a ketogenic diet to continue to see the improvement. I’ll try to ask him if he’s still taking the glp- drug.
@hubermanlab
I live with schizophrenia and am directly impacted by this decision. My life would have been completely different if I had known about this sooner. My before and after pictures say everything. I never thrived under the current treatment protocols. We need this terribly.
@IainCampbellPhD
My brother in law had uncontrollable bipolar for probably 15 years. He was on disability and he got metabolic syndrome from Abilify. He saw improvement in his mental health after being on a gap-1 drug and is now a teacher. Previously he couldn’t even keep a job pushing carts.
@BeingLisa831
@DrSuneelDhand
I weighed 273 pounds in 2020. I had weight loss drugs offered to me and I declined. I choose to loose my weight through diet and exercise even though I take a medication that is known to cause massive weight gain. It can be done the hard way even in the obese.
@SBakerMD
2020- I went low carb and low sugar

2024- I started keto for my schizophrenia

Insurance companies should be covering cgm’s for mental health patients. So why am I paying out of pocket for my cgm when my schizophrenia is glucose fed. So many changes need to happen in mental health care. We matter too!

It’s criminal not to allow this research to be conducted. I personally use the ketogenic diet and metabolic therapies to control my schizophrenia as the current antipsychotic meds fail me.
@drcateshanahan
I have schizophrenia and meds no longer work for me. I do keto to control my schizophrenia. Without it I would be extremely symptomatic. Research should not be stopped. In fact I’ve waited for this my whole life. My father had schizophrenia and meds failed him as well.
@IainCampbellPhD
@LWSchizophrenia
Yes, demand will soar as more and more patients realize there are other options available besides taking a pill. The side effects from my antipsychotic medication were incredibly hard to tolerate. Im so glad to have another option.
