I grew up in the Northland not far from where Ralph was shot. One of our neighbors had Confederate-themed dice cubes dangling from his truck’s mirror. It’s sad to see that kind of hate still exists there, and this captures the paradox of organizing in the Northland. (1/4)

It is ludicrous that these plans are changing *as votes are rolling in* and that alone is reason to vote no. People in this city who work for a living ought to feel insulted that the owners thought they could get away with forcing this half-baked proposal down our throats.

Sales taxes are a tax on the working class because they take a bigger share of a poor person’s income than a rich person’s. Furthermore, if you live in Jackson County you will pay more in the long run than the folks from Overland Park who swing by to go to a game occasionally.

Folks are gonna call me naive or delusional for feeling this way, but I don’t know. I’d rather live my life naive than content with how the world as it is works for people like me.

I think that more people would choose to rent if we regulated the rental market to provide the same long-term stability that homeownership offers. Rather than creating even more incentives for homeownership, we should start with regulating rent.

In 61 days, KC will decide who represents us in City Hall. @KCTenantsPower knocked 12,000+ doors and made 8,000+ calls leading up to the primary election. Last night this crew worked on our plan to go even harder for the runoff election. A thread on how we got here below (1/11)

On one side, you have the HUD Secretary supporting the SOI ban that our City Council votes on this week. On the other side, you have the local realtors association pushing out emails with quotes comparing this legislation to *Nazi Germany*. The choice could not be more clear.

There is not a binding CBA/lease agreement between the teams and the county. Even if this changed tomorrow, thousands of voters will cast their votes prior to receiving/processing this info. Voters can’t take their vote back after voting. In other words, their vote is *binding*

Yet another sign that the teams are political novices. Real ones know Jeff has been washed for years. The campaign equivalent of the Warriors signing 2023 Chris Paul hoping to make a run at a championship.

@MannyAbarcaIV @JCEFrankWhite I would take it from the billionaires who own the teams. They got 2 million to campaign for the vote, they can pony up some money to help run the election easily. These folks are not penny pinching.

This is an opportunity for people across the country to stand up to these owners and their demands for public $. Again, if nobody offered these deals to them, it’s not like they’d all pack up and go to Europe. They might whine, they might pout, but they would have to accept it.

I expect this kind of fear mongering from Jeff Roe and his crowd, but what’s disappointing is this was paid for by the “Democratic Coalition Kansas City” group.

All of this is to say that the tweet I quoted is correct: there are a lot more reasons to own rather than rent. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. There’s big $$$ invested in making sure renting never becomes a viable long-term option, but we’ll make it happen anyways.

If community input was reduced to voting, we would be excluding people most impacted by society’s problems from deciding on the solutions they need. Undocumented people, youth, elderly, people with felony convictions / disabilities. Voting has always been exclusionary by design.

A great form of community input is the election itself! If we vote in a politician, that’s a statistically significant data point for what the neighborhood values.

When we talk about reducing violence in Kansas City, the KCPD’s victims are almost never considered. To say that we must increase KCPD’s budget to combat violence is a confession that you don’t believe the KCPD itself is a perpetrator of violence.

Homeownership as a wealth-building tool works for some, but it’s exclusionary by design and cannot work for all of us. If every resident of KC owned a single family home, it would drastically increase sprawl which comes with negative impacts, particularly to our climate.
