Calgary radio this morning with the following:
1. Talbot was good despite 6 goals
2. Lucic really brought compete to this game
3. If Reider moved up the line-up he will produce
It was like the alternative universe of Oilers radio last year
Here comes the darkness Flames fan
@TSNRyanRishaug
Can you ask him his opinion about the NHLPA’s efforts on the sexual abuse investigation in Chicago and whether those were acceptable to him?
Shout out to Brett Kulak who somehow managed to not be on the ice for a goal against at evens, but on the ice for two for the good guys and was one of two Oilers to break even on shot share.
Maybe he is the 1D!
Gonna repeat myself here. I saw Ty Emberson play 50 times between Wisconsin and Tuscon in the AHL. His skills match the Oil.
His 5v5 pts/60 would have placed him 3rd on Oilers D behind 2/14. He also averaged 3.7 shots/g. 2,14 and 25 were over 6 shots/g.
Analytical trade IMO
The Edmonton Oilers don’t have a scout in the OHL. I wonder how many NHL teams don’t have a scout in the junior league that develops the most professional prospects.
There seems to be a lot of surprise at Mike Smith.
I'm an Oiler fan living in Calgary.
I saw 18/19 Calgary Flames up close.
Smith destroyed that dressing room.
Well reported. Google it.
My general thoughts on today's July 1 work by the Oilers.
- The clear bet here is the goaltending and the PK will not be the disaster each were to start last season;
- The Oilers will get some regular cheap wins off of this alone;

The mental gymnastics of those who love Klim Kostin as an Oiler, but don’t think Jesse Puljujarvi can ever rebound in another organization is impressive.
My last 2 cents on Holloway. These are SOME of his traits scouts acknowledge:
1. He’s NHL fast;
2. He’s physical;
3. He’s big;
4. He’s a forechecking demon;
5. He’s a 200 foot player;
6. He’s greasy; and
7. He’s very confident.
Do you think he’s a fit for this series?
So I like Ty Emberson a bunch. He played with Holloway at Wisconsin and got to see him plenty. He makes an excellent pass and is a very good skater. He is really a 4-6 D. Could he play with Nurse? Jury is out. The skill Fs for the Oilers will like this player.
This beautiful lady between my Dad and I is my Mom. Mom went home to be with Jesus and to take care of my daughter, Sydney.
Wife, Mom and Grandma whose love and grace were matched only by her determination to make the lives of people around her better.
Love you Mom.
Woodcroft is a data guy. He started as a video coach and he speaks lots about his analytics preferences. I expect big changes in player deployment, TOI and line and D pair matching based on his analytics focus. This will take time, but it will be a sea change for certain. 6/
I love this pick. It is also going to end up firing up the Hunter to EDM rumours as well.
O'Reilly is already a pro player. He works hard in all three zones. Is very physical. Smart player with a heavy, heavy shot. He's likely a winger at the pro level.
I get people will want to rail on Smith or the Oilers for giving up a 3-0 lead, but that third period was absolute top calibre playoff hockey by the Oilers. Locked the Flames, minimized chances and overcame adversity. Strong!
Folks, the Oilers brought in a defender and a winger and sent out two picks. I would be very careful about assuming you know what’s coming next just because they have more cap space.
Broberg/Holloway will be chalked up to a contract/cap space issue for which many are to blame. For me, it's a clear example of how the inept development program of prospects under Ken Holland led to this day
Whatever we think of 86/55, they are NHLers and had cost control

Evan Bouchard for D having played 700 minutes, here is the list of players who have more 5x5 points age 22 and under.....oh wait it's none. He has 6 more 5x5 points than Quinn Hughes and Mo Seider.
There are actually only 9 players in the league ahead of him.

If signing Corey Perry prevents trading for a slow-footed, right shot forward in exchange for a 3rd round pick and a 24 year old RHD prospect who projects in the top 4, I'm all for it.
Daryl Sutter took over the Flames last year and went 15-15 in his 30 games.
This year he’s got a .677 winning percentage with a team that’s had zero injury issue.
Jay Woodcroft is rocking a .636 in his first 22 games.
I’m pretty comfortable with the direction of the Oilers
Josh Brown is a hard-nosed 3rd pairing right shot D who played roughly 15 mins a game last 2 seasons in Arizona.
Won Memorial Cup with Oshawa in 2015 beating Erie in the OHL Final.
The
@EdmontonOilers
pro scouts have liked him for a while.
Can we just start with the fact that JW sees that he’s got a LD issue tonight and decides to go 11-7 and play the 3 youngsters limited minutes so they don’t get overwhelmed.
Maybe it was Manson, but whomever it was, that’s the most impressive part of this game for me.
Shout out to Ryan McLeod, Jesse Puljujarvi and Warren Foegele for giving the 3rd line I so desperately have wanted to see since 2006.
Keep cranking it out boys.
For those wondering what Dave Manson will instill in his D, watch this Niemelainen shift. The expectation is for that D is to be up the ice in the play on the weakside.
I actually think 97 makes the wrong read likely because he cannot believe what's happening. Lol.
This is some of the best structural hockey from this Oiler team in a couple of months. Against a legit SC contender.
They are stifling the stiflers.
Playoff winning hockey.
Never let it be said I don’t wish good things for the Calgary Flames.
I totally wish for 3 top forwards on the Flames to have career seasons while all in contract years during a flat cap era.
It’s honestly how stupid fast the Oilers have changed their structure with great success. I cannot even express how tough that is to do in 2 weeks let alone 4 days.
The Los Angeles Kings had something like 10 players play their first playoff game in this series, but the Oilers cannot play JP regular minutes or call up Dylan Holloway and the jury is out on Philip Broberg usage.
Greybeards are the only way to go.
What an organization.
Shout out to the toothless wonder Ryan McLeod who somehow has overcome not being a veteran and is absolutely knocking it out of the park. I know Makar and Toews have seen enough of him.
There is a new OHL scoring leader and his name is Matvey Petrov. Currently, 1-3-4 in his game tonight to take over the scoring lead.
He also has 5 shots and he’s 4-0 GF at evens.
Until the Edmonton Oilers fix their bottom two D pairings, you can put any combination of forwards up front and it still won’t matter.
The team will just lose momentum 2 out of every 3 shifts.
Look at McDavid’s numbers with/without Evan Bouchard if you need an example.
I think we are seeing the emergence of the toothless wonder, Ryan McLeod. His work on 2PP reminded me of when it started to come for him in the AHL. He started to have success on PP with JW and it just fed the rest of his game.
Sunday will be fascinating to watch him.
Best coaching tonight was Nurse not on at the end of the game. Not sure Kulak was better tonight, but Nurse was so undisciplined and essentially freelanced for 60 mins. “You don’t want to play our system, we need to play someone who will”. Thought that was a good job by Manson.
JP did everything he needed to do tonight.
Holloway did everything he needed to do tonight.
Hamblin did everything he needed to do tonight.
That’s right. James Hamblin.
Sam Steel was signed as a UFA by the Wild on August 30, 2022.
Sam Steel is 24.
Sam Steel is playing 1C.
His linemates, Zuccarello and Kaprizov, are on pace to be near their career highs.
Sam Steel should be instructive to Oilers mgmt, coaches and its top players.
My favorite part of the 2022/23 Oiler season will be, after the Oilers trading one the best two way forwards they have, Oiler media lighting up 97 and 29 for their defensive play. It’s coming. Guaranteed.
Last game of a road trip.
9 game win streak.
Mtl.
McLeod with flu. I'm betting he's not the only one.
Played a free lancing team that played hard on body and puck.
Every excuse to roll over.
Decided to play "inside" in the 3rd period. Was the difference.
Stu Skinner, man.
Using Beau Akey's first NHL exhibition game as your reason to hate on Philip Broberg's selection/development is incredibly unfair and unbalanced to both players.
Cooper Marody has nothing left to prove in the AHL. If he isn't going to get a look in Edmonton, I hope he gets a chance with an organizations that understands how to deploy him.
One day I’m certain that Bob Nicholson will get critiqued as harshly as Jesse Puljujarvi by Edmonton media
Thinking of unsung friends at Hockey Canada who routinely work 18 hour days for para/women/men & development & don’t deserve this but face it b/c of cowards like Nicholson
If you feel for McDavid and Draisaitl and the struggles over the years, you shouldn’t feel joy at Matthews and Marner losing. Sometimes it’s luck, asshole officiating or organizational ineptitude. Whatever it is, it’s not on Matthews or Marner. Those guys are the real deal.
Ok, today I want to post a short thread on what it means when a coach says the system didn't fail, the players failed to execute. Jay Woodcroft has said this a lot this year and last night had examples of it. In question is the second goal against and the Oilers 1-1-3 NZ.

🔁 TRADE 🔁
The
#Oilers
have acquired defenceman Troy Stecher along with a seventh-round selection in the 2024 Draft from the Coyotes in exchange for Edmonton’s fourth-round selection in the 2027 Draft.
#LetsGoOilers
When I think of the impact of Dave Manson, I think of plays like this. Niemelainen transformed himself so much under Manson, it's incredible. This is just text book. Stick on to stick. Body on body. Degrade the opponent's possession and cause some suffering at the same time.
Jay Woodcroft being out-coached game in and game out was not on my bingo card for the year.
The Golden Knights game is a massive game for the Oilers. Massive.
For the record the extra trade is what I was hoping for. I was confident there was going to be zero interest in retaining Broberg given the contract and his trade request. Holloway was iffy. But when 29 is thinking of a "team friendly" deal, how do you justify this in the room.
Folks, the Oilers brought in a defender and a winger and sent out two picks. I would be very careful about assuming you know what’s coming next just because they have more cap space.
Nurse is apparently a maniac for video analysis. Just show that clip of him standing up Rantanen at the blue line on loop the entire summer. I honestly don’t think he understands how effective he could be.
Unpopular opinion. The fights by Nurse and Kostin were not smart.
The Oilers lost their composure and some of the structure went with it.
Take numbers. Secure the game. Then seek retribution.
In all seriousness, I would be reaching out to the NY Rangers to see if there was a deal for Jayden Grubbe. He’s got some work to do, but he would be a nice fit in the Oilers organization.
Remember when Ken Holland brought in Jay Woodcroft when the Oilers had 10 days off so they could work on systems and be able to assess players when every game wasn’t a critical one for the playoff drive.
Me neither.
106 goals in 26 games under JW.
82 game pace is 334 goals.
Lord as my witness playing responsible structure does lead to offense. Especially when you have the UNICORN.
Delicious.
I, for one, hope that Leon Draisaitl doesn't get voted to the All-Star and he is punished by sitting in a pool chair sipping mojitos in Cabo for three or four days.
Wild to me that people think Barkov did a great job against 97 or his toughest playoff match-up. Barkov got caved. Was bailed out by his goalie. Worst XGA of the team. Wouldn't be surprised if the 5 man unit with Barkov was changed in GM2. I worry more about the 2L of FLA.
The Broberg Situation:
I wanted to provide my thoughts on Broberg/Holloway situations separately. To be clear I think both are qualified. It buys the Oilers a few weeks. Also, these posts don't deal with whose to blame and why. That's wasted energy now.
On Broberg:
1/11
Offer sheet terms by
#stlblues
:
Philip Broberg: 2 years x $4,580,917
Dylan Holloway: 2 years x $2,290,457
Compensation due is a third-round pick for Holloway and a second-round pick for Broberg.
One dollar more on AAV for each player would have bumped up compensation.
