Over the Moon to have this new lady in our lives! Mia was a very healthy 4.435kg meaning she‘s 2.88kg of oxygen from a massive star exploding, 0.82kg of carbon and 0.14kg of nitrogen from a smaller Sun-like star shedding its newly formed elements into space.

The youngest astronomer we’ve had present at @Swinburne , Blake spoke about his research on stellar optical spectroscopy, building a radio telescope and even beat some of our grad students to lunchtime pizza. Inspiring to meet someone so dedicated to their craft so young

Hubble spots a SINGLE STAR billions of light years away. Even as an astronomer I'm astounded at the power of this telescope when combined with natural gravitational lenses

This is the attitude we need to teach the next generation (in all walks of life!), anything worth doing is usually challenging to do...

Whaaa?! Hawks can see the planet Venus change phase (ie illuminated shape) just like our Moon does! 🤯

Early astronomers - amazing that a hawk has 20/2 vision (6" acuity). So they've been flying around at night for aeons watching all phases of Venus all the time! We're stuck on 20/20, we don't resolve Venus at all, otherwise Copernican principle discovered thousands of years ago.

The vaccine doesn’t make you immune or invulnerable - just like wearing a seatbelt means you’re better off if the worst happens in a car, you’ll still drive sensibly - so I’ll be wearing a mask and following other restrictions as best I can. Stay safe all 🙏

A timely reminder that we need a dedicated GLOBAL effort to search for these asteroids. Sooner or later one will have our name on it. And the earlier we detect it the more we can do about it!

Amazing effort by 35 brave astronomers at a freezing cold #Parkes who observed the Moon with binoculars and telescopes for 10 minutes (trust me that’s a long time!) as part of the #StargazingABC world record attempt!
