Herbert-Losier et al 2017
I often hear from patients that they don't need to exercise outside of work because they have physical enough jobs.
Haltermann et al (2018) () discusses 6 reasons why this might not be the case.
Infograph below can be great to help explain to patients..
A little infograph I have put together for patients re: lifting and back pain
Common Myths and the Evidence...

Great study from 2006:
Baseline MRI in people with no Hx of LBP (n=200)
⬇️
When LBP occurred (n=51) - Repeat MRI to check for changes
⬇️
Findings: 84% had either no changes on MRI or regression of baseline findings
NEW TISSUE PATHOLOGY VERY RARE IN PRESENCE OF PAIN
Really excited to start this role in the new year!
An absolute honour to be appointed & have the opportunity to shape the future of our profession with an excellent team around me
@thecsp
Reasons for the increase in sickness absence complicated & not just ergonomic!
Worsening social determinants of health, widening health inequalities, services that are more difficult to access due to waiting lists & a workforce shortage in the NHS
It’s not just your chair!
Welcome to the world

Thank you so much to the amazing team

for delivering him safe.
*Side note - the all women surgical team are the heroines I want my 4 year old daughter to aspire too!*

I often get asked when advocating that repetitive spinal flexion can be ok:
'Will I pay for it later?'
I always like to cite this study by Foss in 2012 that shows repetitive high loads of flexion DO NOT seem to contribute to more LBP later in life
#FlexionIsOK
This little space man really didn't fancy doing
#physio
. Instead we put on his moon boots (AFOs) + did some slow space walking, negotiating obstacles on the moon, picking up moon rocks and throwing them to each other + spent time in the decompression chamber (standing frame).

The patients I see who are able to get out of the pain the quickest are those with the biggest OAR:

We need to promote these as much as possible in everyone we see

We strongly opposed the 20% rise in fees from the HCPC!
"This rise, way over and above the rate of inflation, is a kick in the teeth for members currently facing the cost of living crisis and of course colleagues in the NHS who have been on strike"
I'm not sure why but

Not quite the headline I was after, but, a step in the right direction after a few things that have been in the media. I also didn't mention anything about mattresses.... … Also attached are the points I sent through after we spoke (just for clarity)

👏👏
'Avoiding rounding the back while lifting is a common belief in Physio's & Manual Handling Adviser's despite the lack of evidence that any specific spinal posture is a risk factor for low back pain'
Posture & LBP
✅Lots of studies - 4285 publications
✅Results more consistently in favour of an association
❎Unless a SR that only inc prospective studies
❎No consensus re: causality
Conclusion - Mixed results that posture relates to LBP, no evidence of causation
Looking forward to delivering Manual Handling training tomorrow with a 'Non-Injury Model Approach'
Some forward thinking businesses out there starting to gain interest in updating their approaches ...

To be very clear, this is not part of the pay offer currently on the table and it is NOT what you are voting on. This is a unilateral decision the RCN have taken to table talks with the government without the support of the other health unions.
@thecsp
do not support this.
A new pay spine for nursing would mean, like doctors and dentists, nursing pay would be negotiated separately, getting our profession the recognition it is owed.
This is crucial for safe staffing.
Vote on this and the rest of the NHS pay offer here:

Good luck to all physios out on strike today!
A really difficult decision not taken lightly. The CSP are with you, the public are with you and keep in mind why you have taken this action. Physios deserve better!

Lovely qualitative bit of research here!
Patients sometimes seek a biomedical diagnosis to legitimise their condition to co-workers & collegues.
This is why expanding our education of LBP beyond the sufferer is so important. It has implications for everyone...

My photographer wife asked me to take some pictures of her because 'no-one ever takes her picture' ..
3 out of 9000 I took were ok! Certainly won't be looking to change career any time soon haha

This is why with patients we need to go into more detail about their job role.
Conversation often might go;
'What do you do for a job'
'Firefighter'
'That's interesting' (move on)
We sometimes assume we have an understanding of what that might entail. Big rehab implications!
One of the most rewarding days in work I've had. Especially given recent events.

She is in really good spirits & gave permission for the pic (she wanted me to post to show off her bruises to my physio friends 🤣)
Thanks to

Having seen the discussion on 'Non-Medical Consultants' I must say, it is this level of professional protectionism that will hinder system transformation we need towards non-condition specific pathways for ⬆️patients with multiple LTC
We need to collaborate, not compete 🤝

"Physical activity, particularly vigorous activity, is beneficial in helping maintain intervertebral disc health"
How much is too much? How well can our discs adapt to load & at what rate? Lots of questions but no doubt a certain amount of loading is beneficial...

In vitro models of disc pathology tell us that a disc has a finite tolerance.
But, what the in vivo models tell us is that the disc can adapt and recover.
We have the ability through cyclic loading to improve tolerance as we do anywhere else in the body
