I don’t want “content”. I don’t want endless videos to watch to pass my time. I don’t want vapid art to consume so my eye holes have just anything to look at so I’m not bored. I experience film and art to FEEL something. I want art to communicate human experience MADE BY HUMANS
Dreamworks co-founder Jeff Katzenberg says AI will cut cost of animation movies by 90% within the next three years:
“In the good old days, you might need 500 artists and years to make a world-class animated movie. I don’t think it will take 10% of that three years from now.”
I don’t care that it can take 5-10 years to make a film or series (or music or anything). I would rather wait on something incredible made with heart by living people, than have 100 new movies to watch tomorrow.
@StairMasterNem
I think it’s just about how people value artists in animation. the public view is changing but slowly. Most people still think cartoons r for kids. Disney makes “live action” versions of their animated films cuz public opinion says that’s more valuable, even tho the movies suck
@dov_______
It’s not being used as a tool tho, they want to use it to create. The nature of ai is to be derivative. It’s taking from us (artists) and using what people give it to make something. by definition is derivative. It’s not communicating a message or an experience it just exists
@TurboDong69
It doesn’t have to erase intentionality but IT DOES. And those “menial tasks” are currently done by real people, underpaid, who put a million little stupid east eggs in the art for you to enjoy and pick apart. We LIKE doing them and the movie makes 100x enough to pay us to do it
@shannonmanor
Honestly I don’t think they meet any of us or our bosses. I think those people meet the LP and the LP has to basically just keep their cool to keep their job. No one that makes less than 300k talks to executives and that’s def the problem! These dummies never hear the truth
@dov_______
I think this is missing the point of the act of making art. I ENJOY drawing. I enjoy the process of making animation. If I had an unrelated job, I would still do this for my own enjoyment. I don’t want to become a conveyor belt that churns out new shit as fast as possible.

If we had a society and economy that supported the unemployed so we didn’t lose our homes when we lose our job this wouldn’t be that big of an isue. But unfortunately in America we need to work to live
I feel like this meme could be used for commercial storyboarders and animation storyboarders. Commercial dudes can get paid 1k a day and I feel like no one in animation knows about that.

Ai takes away 90% of that joy. Why do they want us to use ai? To make shit insanely fast to feed consumers. But y’all need something new every fucking day? It becomes meaningless, devoid of emotion. Respect us, and respect how long it takes us to share our fucking soul in the art
@MikeTMoroney
We gotta ween ourselves and the next gen off of instant gratification just so we can get back some more enjoyment in the process and the patience again. Let ai do actually useful work in the world and let us love our jobs again
@Mcodywiley
I try and cast a wide net and make sure to start looking a few months before a contract ends. My wide net usually consists of potential work in different countries that usually have different months of low work. So far I’ve had 5 years of nonstop work with many different clients
@TurboDong69
What’s the point of making it more quickly tho? WHY do you need it so fast? These movies already make obscene amounts of money that’s NOT shared with the artists. If they came out every day, all the money would still go to the CEOs, and you’d have dog shit content to watch

Agent Elvis airs March 17th on Netflix! I worked on this thing at back in 2020/21. The first 3 episodes are all us and I’m really proud of them. I thumbed this shot and it ended up not being used, so I cleaned it up back then and I still kinda love it.

I’ve been loving OK KO lately. Enid is the fuckin best and to go along with me just needing to doodle something that’s not storyboarding after work, I drew this chick up. It’s fun to just not take some stuff so seriously

My dad worked in animation and computer games in the 90s. From my perspective of his experience, we have it better now. He got fired from a job and never recovered from it. He never really figured out how to keep up with technology, and a lot of older guys had that issue.
@dov_______
The fact that the public is so pro ai already shows that they didn’t give a fuck about artists in the first place. We are workers just like you or the guy a Mac Donald’s. There are thousands of us And we shouldn’t have to suffer and struggle just to enjoy living and working
@Mcodywiley
And also just being annoying to as many people as possible that can help me get gigs and not being ashamed to ask for help. But than also a bunch of my connections come from moving and living in a different area of the world, which just helped build stronger relationships 🤷🏻♀️
@dov_______
The act of animating frame by frame is cool, but that’s not our complaint about using ai. It’s not going to be used as just an extra tool for us to make something. Cutting costs by 90% means it will be used to do everything
@InkBenArt
He had a consistent job for many years, and then no job for many years, and then never got back into the industry. Working on 6 month schedules now sucks, but we have a much bigger safety net than ever before and there’s more opportunities and ways to learn new skills.

! I’m a storyboard artist currently working on Star Trek Lower Decks. I’ve got 7 years experience in storyboarding, 1 year of that directing and leading a team. My contract is up in December so I’m open to anything after that 😘
@TurboDong69
And why would you want iteration after iteration on the SAME FUCKING THING YOUVE ALREADY SEEN BEFORE?? We don’t want a reduction of workload we want a small % of the massive amount of money our art makes and the freedom to make it without fear of being broke and homeless
For my Star Trek Lower Decks crew-I finally started watching Voyager! I finished season 1 and am 6 eps into season 2… Some thoughts: Do people like Neelix? Because I hate him and I think he should die. He’s had so many opportunities to die and so far none of them have succeeded.
Ayyyyy

! I got a new reel and new work ready to show once a few things air in the coming months. But right now I'm looking for storyboarding gigs! hmu if you got something fun in the works
@JaredMorgan
When the script is GOOD good it feels awesome to bring it to life in boards, and when you know the parameters, it allows you to write and add in jokes that fit and plus up the script even more. When the script is shit it turns into board driven but now with less time and inspo
@dov_______
But it does. It’s devaluing the person behind the product more so than we already are. The more we rely on ai and let it go unchecked the less we will be paid and the more artists will lose jobs.
@amandawtwong
I’m actually curious too! Cuz in my boards I had him do more of a roll and playing with his legs lol. But I liked the direction they went in, and they put a lot more of his weight into his movements
This THURSDAY we drop the final three episodes of SCAVENGERS REIGN! Huge thanks to everyone that's been watching and sharing the show so far, I hope you enjoy the finale!
Fuck Wacom. They have such a huge monopoly on their tablets and pens and are the absolute worst when something breaks. They have so much stupid money. To cheap out and use ai images for promotion is fucked

Avatar Kyoshi, Rangi, Yun, and MORE characters from The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi novels will appear in substantial roles in Avatar Studios' first animated movie (adult Gaang) or show (new earth Avatar), both slated for 2025!
All the info:
I’m so sorry to the Boons & Curses team! I was really excited for that show. Sucks when something gets canned in the middle of production, but it’s not unheard of. I was in a similar situation a year or so back. It’s always for stupid reasons too.
Come on, dude. Admit it. You have no problem with all the heterosexual content in YJ. (And there's WAY more of that than there is LGBTQA+ content.) You simply want to eliminate things you personally don't want to see. This isn't about kids. This is about PREJUDICE.

I think economically, because of inflation and how expensive rent is, we do make less money, but I don’t think that’s an issue for animation alone, that’s in every industry. I feel good about where animation is going. But for the economy in general not so much

Animators (also modelers) are some of the lowest paid workers in animation and sometimes get paid just as much as retail workers. At some companies producers pocket the extra cash they get from clients and give bonuses to the higher ups instead of paying the employees fairly
