I struggle to understand why clean air in schools hasn't become an issue championed by educational workers' unions. I think about this every single day and I'm completely baffled. Aren't unions supposed to champion workplace safety? Make it make sense.... 👩🏻🏫
Public Health says wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces.

But there is only one smart student with savvy survival instincts in my kid’s school wearing a mask. Not one educator wears one. 3/
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau:
The last thing I feel like doing this evening is sitting in front of my computer, writing this email, but as much as I’d like to simply relax and enjoy my evening, I can’t.
I spent a lot of time this weekend thinking about why I've been feeling so low. I think it can best be described as an almost soul-deep level of disappointment with what passes for political leadership right now.
After having a pretty hellacious set of symptoms following my 1st dose (AZ) in mid-April, I was really, really nervous about getting my 2nd shot (Pfizer) yesterday. I'm happy to report that it's been 24 hours since that second shot and I'm feeling great. So relieved.
Having a super emotional day. I was holding it all together until the nurse-practitioner at my doctor's office asked me how I was doing. That made me cry. I'm both "Okay" and "Not okay" at the same time -- like so many of us right now.
I feel this strong need to send a message of love out into the world. It feels so small, so inadequate, and so necessary. So here's a bit of love for you, fellow caring human who is feeling pretty shattered right now. Because love is everything, today and always.💗
I don't think the provincial government fully appreciates just how angry parents and teachers are. And it's not just parents and teachers. It's everyone who cares about kids. That's a lot of citizens/voters.
#NoCutsToEducation
I didn't sleep well last night. I kept waking up thinking about the huge gap between the public policy that is being offered versus the policy we actually need. I'm thinking about climate change, disability justice, COVID, electoral reform, high-quality childcare -- all of it.
Scientists have made it crystal clear that the only path out of this pandemic is to vaccinate the entire world. I cannot understand why Canada, a country that prides itself on being a good global citizen, has not yet ratified the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS waiver,
Self care isn't selfish. It's self preservation. And it doesn't have to be hugely complicated or expensive. It can be as simple as hitting the pause button during an otherwise overwhelming day.
#InternationalSelfCareDay
My daughter got her COVID vaccination yesterday (she's a medical lab technologist) and my Dad is getting his on Thursday.
It's a good news week for our family. 🌤️
You're allowed to care about issues that don't affect you personally.
You're allowed to criticize a government or political party that you generally tend to support.
This is how we make things better -- by insisting on better from ourselves and others.
[ This is the text of a letter that I emailed to Prime Minister
@JustinTrudeau
this evening. I also sent copies to my Member of Parliament
@shelbykramp
and to NDP leader
@theJagmeetSingh
. I have also posted the text of this letter to my blog: ]
I just want to give every parent on the planet a gigantic hug right now.
The holiday season is challenging at the best of times -- and this is anything but the best of times.
Someone I love and care about did a really hard thing today. They got their first COVID shot. I'm super proud of them for finding the courage to do it. That's what I'm celebrating in my tiny little corner of the world on an otherwise bleak February morning.❄️
Some exciting book news.📖
The book I've been working on for the past two years now has a title and a publication date.👩🏻💻
Navigating the Messy Middle: A Fiercely Honest and Wildly Encouraging Guide for Midlife Women will be published by Douglas + McIntyre in September.✨
I just drove past a group of students protesting in Clarkson Village. I honked my support —16 times! 🙂 I couldn’t be more inspired by these kids. (Yes, I am crying.)
#StudentsSayNo
As Doctors Without Borders has noted, “This measure has been continually blocked, opposed or simply delayed by many of the same wealthy countries who have already secured the vaccine doses they need — including Canada.”
The sky is picture-perfect this afternoon, just as it was exactly 25 years ago today -- the day I went for the ultrasound that told me that my baby was about to be stillborn.🤰🏻
I can't stop obsessing about the handful of people I know who are actually supportive of the events in Ottawa. I mean, I thought I knew them, but clearly I didn't. It's painful to watch them twisting themselves into pretzels defending the indefensible.
Canada needs to do better. So much better. It needs to demonstrate the moral leadership needed in this moment by supporting the TRIPS waiver. I urge you and your government to demonstrate that leadership.
The theatre community needs to have the clean air conversation. (I would love to be attending -- and spending money on -- indoor arts events on a regular basis but I'm not aware of any theatres prioritizing clean air.)
Find a way to make peace with whatever decisions you’re being asked to make right now. Your goal is to be able to say to yourself, “I made the best decision I could with the information I had at the time” as opposed to endlessly second-guessing yourself.
@Sflecce
There is no "Team Parent." Parents, teachers, and kids are *all on the same team.* That's because we all want the same thing: a well-funded public education system that allows every child in this province to thrive.
Today I got to hug my Dad for the first time since the pandemic started. I also got to visit with one of my sisters and her family -- another pandemic first. I knew I'd feel emotional, but I hadn't counted on still feeling weepy an hour or two later. Today was big.😭
@MeetJess
I had a dental appointment today. They sent me a COVID screening form ahead of time. They verified that info when I arrived at the office. All of the staff were fully masked and so was I (other than during the dental procedure itself). It felt like the best moments of 2020.✨
Fourteen years ago today, I did something that changed my life.
I signed up for a Twitter account.
The conversations I've had since that time have served as a masterclass in rethinking pretty much everything.
So grateful to everyone who has helped me learn and grow.🌱
Parents, teachers, and other caring adults: Let's remember to thank these young people for standing up for themselves and their future. And let's be inspired to move ourselves to action as well. Because, yes, we've got this -- if we stand together.
#StudentsSayNo
we walk out today. to young people: be brave, be bold, do not let them tell you what you know or what you deserve. get up. walk out. we got this. 💓
#StudentsSayNo
I was able to lose myself in a book for a couple of hours today. It felt like such a gift. Books have been there for me during so many difficult times in my life. I love books and people who write them. 📖
It’s pretty clear to me that we as Canadians need to be doing everything in our power to reduce the likelihood of future variants upending our lives once again—not just for our own sakes, but for the sake of everyone.
@DFisman
I hope someone is studying the long-term effects on ordinary people of repeatedly watching leaders do the wrong and/or morally questionable thing. Because it feels pretty devastating to me -- crushing some days. Gaslighting as a form of moral injury.
I'm normally more composed during interviews and try to avoid swearing
But today's
@CBCSunday
interview with
@piya
was a bit raw. Apologies
I've received dozens of emails from Canadians, asking what they can do. Thread below 👇🏾
I had no idea just how much I needed a long weekend until I actually started to relax. Spent the afternoon sitting under a tree, reading about trees. It was perfect. 🌳📖🫖
@DGBassani
Your posts about grief have been beautiful -- and I am sure they have helped a lot of people. I'm sorry that a few people have chosen to take advantage of your open-heartedness and willingness to be vulnerable. You deserve so much better.
@isabelkaplan
My husband told me, "I love being married to a writer" at just the right moment when I was writing my most recent book. And he was equally supportive during the writing of the other 25 books. (Like "taking care of four kids while I was out on tour" kind of supportive.)
Did you know that
@CBCOntarioToday
is planning a phone-in show for kids on Thursday? ☎️ They want kids to call in and share stories about what they're doing to keep themselves entertained while they're at home. Such a great idea to give kids a chance to swap strategies.
Sending everyone so much love right now -- because I think we all need it. It's been an exceptionally hard week in an exceptionally hard summer in an exceptionally hard decade. I don't have any magic solutions so, in lieu of solutions, love. 💗
@paimadhu
@Reuters
I might even be a bit more direct! "Vaccine-hoarding countries dump almost expired vaccines on low-income countries." And here's a subhead for the story: "Strategy eases first-world guilt and conveniently points the finger of blame away from first-world policy failures."
Dear

@JustinTrudeau
You have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix our voting system -- a system that is preventing us from making meaningful progress on so many important issues.
I keep thinking about how many of our fellow Canadians are struggling—really struggling—right now, as a result of the ongoing stress and strain posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
💯 If our kids emerge from this crisis (a) feeling loved and supported by their parents; and (b) mastering some all-important coping skills, the truly important learning -- the life learning -- will be massive.
@cg_canning
It's so important to connect with other people who are willing to say this out loud. The cultural gaslighting right now is next level -- and I feel like we're in for a wild ride this fall. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see how any of this is going to end well.
I am so happy that
@SamTecle
created this fundraiser to honour the critically important work
@NoLore
has been doing throughout the entire pandemic. If you've been inspired and informed by her journalism, you might want to consider donating, too.
It's deeply discouraging. And it goes without saying that I'll be even more discouraged if an unnecessary federal election is called. Because, honestly, who has the time, patience, or emotional bandwidth for that right now, after everything we've been through? Not me.
(A very cool aside: 100% of the people attending the event—all 30 of them—wore masks as well. It was a beautiful thing to see: so many people looking out for one another.) 🥰
Grief is both the most painful emotion and the most beautiful emotion, because it is an emotion that is deeply rooted in love. Love for the person that is gone and love for the memory of that person; everything they meant and will always mean to you. Love goes on. 💗
Because it's not okay to encourage people to talk about mental health -- and then leave them in the lurch when it comes to actually accessing treatment. We can and must do more.

Fast forward by three decades and I still find thinking that same thought every single day. "I thought the world would be so much better than this by now." And yet it's not. In fact, in many ways, it feels like things are getting worse.
@cg_canning
I'm not immunocompromised, but so many people I care about are. And ditto for people I don't even know. I care about them, too!
We deserve so much better from our governments. I share your frustration and sadness and I am deeply touched by your honesty.
I'm thinking of politicians at all levels of government who had the opportunity to take bold action to address the multiple emergencies that we're dealing with, but didn't; who wasted valuable time when we didn't have that time to waste.
Students and their families need and deserve this kind of information.
“I would like for the Government of Ontario, the Ministry of Education to create a website that lists every school by name and what they’ve done in terms of protections,”
@DickZoutman
declared.
Parents, teachers, and students are dealing with sky-high levels of anxiety this summer.🏖️
They're finding it hard to relax and enjoy summer because they're worried about what back-to-school is going to look like this year. 🏫
That's not right!
#SafeSeptember
I was a young mother when the
#MontrealMassacre
happened -- 8 1/2 months pregnant with my second child. I remember thinking at the time, "I thought the world would be so much better than this by the time my daughter came along." (She was 18 months old at the time.)
@parentaction4ed
Imagine if we asked people in other professions to do this.
For example:
Hybrid surgery: You're doing in-person surgery on one patient while you're overseeing remote surgery on another patient. 🧠💻
Pretty ridiculous, right?
One moment, the trees are bare; the next, they're covered in leaves. Everything looks and feels so alive -- such a vibrant shade of green. I love this time of year so much.🌱
My wish for every kid who is trick-or-treating tonight?
That they have twice as much fun as usual.
So many kids gave up so much last year, in order to help keep everyone safe.
I just want them to have a magical time tonight.
Happy Halloween! 🎃
I know we're roughly a year into this pandemic thing, but sometimes I still can't believe it's real.
I feel like I'm going to be mentally processing the events of the past year for the rest of my life.
Spent the morning connecting with, and learning from, a group of activist friends who are passionate about making change. 👩🏻💻
Spent the afternoon getting my vaccine. 💉
Today was the perfect antidote to yesterday. 🤯
I hope your day has been a good one, too. 💗
I’m walking through a neighborhood of opulent homes. Mansions, actually. And on lawn after lawn, I am seeing PC signs. If I were braver, I would ask someone this question: “Why not allow other people to have a little more when you already have so much?”
My book revisions have been emailed back to my editor, one day early and with 190 words left in my word budget. This feels like an author miracle. 👩🏻💻✨
Hey, employers:
Don’t just call them essential workers.
Treat them like essential workers.
Go above and beyond when it comes to offering health and safety protections in your workplace.
I learn so much from people on Twitter. 👩🏻💻
Every.
Single.
Day.
I particularly appreciate it when people are willing to share their own hard-earned wisdom because they want to make things better for others. That's incredibly generous and inspiring.💗
I called my family doctor's office today to find out if it would be possible to check my measles immunity levels. The receptionist is going to consult with the doctor to see if this is possible. She told me they haven't received a lot of public health guidance on this. 1/5
Dear Friend Who Is Having A Really Hard Time:
It's so much easier (and healthier) to be real about whatever it is you're feeling. Don't feel pressured to play the role of the perpetually happy person. It's okay to be feeling whatever it is you're feeling right now.💗
Yesterday's news cycle was terrible. I'm still dealing with the residual effects today. I'm about to head out for my midday walk in an attempt to hit the brakes on my anxiety and boost my mood. (It's taking more and more effort to feel okay. Not great: just okay.)🚶🏻♀️
There's a definite vibe on Twitter right now.
People are "done with platitudes" and they want "real action - real justice - and real reconciliation - not just more words and symbolic gestures."
You don't have to wait until the next
#BellLetsTalk
Day to talk mental health with me. It's something I think about -- and talk about -- every single day. Let's talk again soon. Until then, be well. 💗
People are a lot more willing to scrutinize the performance of their favourite sports team than to scrutinize the performance of the political party they voted for in the last election. 🏒🗳️🤔
It's not just about you and your family doing better. It's about all of us doing better together. Please vote for a better future for everyone -- not just a privileged few.🗳️
And sometimes the book world doesn't know it needs your book until you've written it. So don't be put off by the need to create an "on trend" book, first-time authors. Just write the book you were meant to write.
Working really hard at not becoming completely disheartened by everything. You?
Shoutout to the sun for shining today, when I really needed it, and to the fresh spring breeze, for reminding me that things are constantly changing (and sometimes for the good).
If you're an employer in Ontario, this might be a great day to reach out to employees who are parents, just to say,
"We know you're dealing with a massive curveball with the rescheduling of the March Break. And here's what we want to do to help..."
Each time I vote in an election, I vote with the best interests of "the village" in mind. 🗳
I vote for policies that will create happier, healthier communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 🌻

There's a similar thing happening here in Eastern Ontario.
The scary thing is that most people appear to be completely oblivious to the risk.

Apparently men are a whole lot happier with the way things are going in Ontario than women are.🤷🏻♀️ This certainly supports what I've been hearing from women (and from mothers in particular): we're not just done with the status quo. We're eager for change!
Philippe J. Fournier: A new poll shows recent events have taken a considerable toll on PC support, putting the party just barely ahead of the Ontario NDP and Liberals
I'm heartened by the rising chorus of voices saying that the status quo simply isn't good enough. Because it isn't. Women and girls deserve better. We all deserve better. Because everyone is damaged by a culture that harms women.
@birgitomo
💯 People really need to understand that the healthcare staffing shortage isn't just the result of the pandemic. This is the result of decades worth of chronic underfunding of healthcare. And it doesn't have to be this way! We're a wealthy country/province.
@mlpaoceo
@imgrund
Agreed! I'm related to one of those hard-working lab professionals. She and her co-workers have cancelled their vacation, taken on countless hours of overtime, and done everything else possible to keep understaffed labs functioning. 👩🏻🔬✨
