My mission had limits to how much “service” you could do in a week (only a few hours per week). Missionaries who did too much service were literally labeled as lazy because they were “avoiding the work.” Only recently began thinking about how… strange that is.

A major misconception that drives me nuts is the idea that all of the cultural problems with Mormonism are a Utah, Idaho & Arizona thing. My friends, I grew up in Iowa. Small Mormon areas have their own brand of problems that can be just as bad- even worse at times.

Growing up was anyone else taught that Satan couldn’t go inside the temple so any thoughts you have inside are purely your own? I got intrusive thoughts so bad every temple trip and just felt awful about it. The temple was a very, very powerful tool for intense shame for me.

I am this person, and know a great many who are also this person. We read the Book of Mormon for years. We prayed sincerely and with real intent. It is possible, and very common to do all these things and end up coming to the conclusion that it’s simply not true.

My wife is a believing member. Removing my name from the records of the church effectively cancels our sealing. She already has a great deal to process, I’m willing to give her time on that one. It’s okay for people to be mindful of loved ones who stay when making this call.

My frustration with theists would decrease significantly if so many of them simply didn’t act like religion has a monopoly on joy, charity, kindness & basically everything altruistic. It’s not enough to show that religion motivates good- they must own it as if they invented it.

32 years of anxiety, trauma, self hatred and depression in the church. Since leaving 2 years ago- life isn’t perfect, but I’m confidently able to say I’m in a better place than I’ve ever been. If I had true happiness before and not now, I’d just go back. 🤷‍♂️

What was the first heavy “shelf” item for you? For me: the 2015 policy of exclusion for children of queer parents. It was the first time I was willing to admit out loud that I felt the brethren weren’t inspired in a decision. I remember feeling very guilty for feeling it too.

I think one of the more dangerous aspects of Mormonism is the sheer volume of membership that won’t question their leadership at all because they assume everything from the Q15 is from God.

Since identifying as agnostic atheist it’s common for people ask me something like “if there’s no God and after life, what’s the point?” It’s a strange thing to me because my people- my life now has tremendously more value in my mind because this is all I get. This IS the point.

Lowkey one of the most damaging psychological components of my upbringing in the church has got to be how much emphasis was placed on satan influencing my thoughts. Thinking the actual devil was so focused on me was a massive mind fuck from a very young age.

Going to church today with my family and I’m happy to say I’m actually looking forward to it. Still a lot of people in the local ward that I really enjoy talking to and I feel like I’ve reached a place where the triggers just aren’t as strong anymore. Healing ❤️‍🩹

I love it when transphobic people tell me trans people should be treated for Gender Dysphoria (a valid DSM5 diagnosis) while also not realizing by far the most common treatment for Gender Dysphoria based on APA’s best practices guidelines includes affirming support & transition.

Accounts like exmo-cringe legitimately make me so sad. Regardless of which side of the Mormon spectrum you land on. If your belief/non belief motivates you to treat people with that much belittlement you cause a lot of harm to everyone involved- in or out of the church.

The actual response I got as a 19 year old kid when I asked what would happen in the temple was “well, we can’t talk about that. Just stay close to the spirit & you’ll be fine.” Zero informed consent. Only way to find out back then was to search “anti” websites for info.

For context- my 2 mo. old daughter is being blessed in the church on Sunday. For obvious reasons I’m excluded from the circle and my believing wife can’t do it because she’s not a man. A lot of emotions are coming up right now. Deconstruction is worth it, but very painful today.
