Anna M. Apffel, MD!!!!
Everything they say is true- the days are long but the years are short. I truly could not have done it without the people around me. Thank you to every person who played a part in this. See you in an OR in Pittsburgh soon!
Hello! I am very excited to be applying to General Surgery in
#Match2024
I am passionate about women in surgery and clinical research. Outside of the hospital I love to cook and watch F1. Can’t wait to connect!
#generalsurgery
#MedTwitter
I was so honored to be awarded the William I. Wolff MD Humanism Prize in Surgery tonight. I hope to be able to carry Dr. Wolff’s legacy forward as a surgeon who cares deeply about all aspects of the person behind the surgical problem. Thank you
@UMmedschool
and the Wolff family!
ERAS submitted ✅ one step closer to being a general surgery resident! 🔪💪
And let me tell you… the Annie of 4 years ago would never believe she was saying that 😂
So excited to see how the rest of this process goes! Thanks for all the support so far!
What an awesome day-Thank you
@broadinstitute
for this opportunity to reflect on and share why I love science. I'll leave you with just one more thing: Use your voice to amplify the voices of the people around you who aren't being heard (or listened to)!
#representationmatters
I was so excited to see this in print today! The first time I've been on a paper! So thankful for the opportunity to participate in meaningful science here.
I'm part of the Student Diversity Council at UMSOM and we are planning a panel based on experiences with minority stress in medicine. We definitely have to send out
@ChaseTMAnderson
's article as required reading. Thank you for such a powerful piece!
Sooooo... I burnt out and wasn't taking care of myself. I needed a few days off and so I took it! I pushed back my rotations and Step 1 date and guess what....the world didn't end. I'm very proud of myself. Every path is different, we are all gonna get there in the end.
I love that I get to
#collaborate
with labs inside and outside of the Broad. Getting to see different labs, each with different disease models and perspectives is an amazing opp. I even got to present a poster among the other RAs...come along way since my first science fair!
This is my first yr as a full-time scientist! Excited to be working in
@broadinstitute
’s Proteomics Platform. I am a biology major from
@AmherstCollege
and proteomics is exciting to me because it’s a new lens through which we can understand big biological questions!
First day of Broad Bio Coding Club! Excited to work with 7th graders at Putnam Avenue Upper School and get them excited about microbiology and coding! Thanks to
@broadinstitute
office of Diversity, Education, and Outreach for this opportunity!
My dad,
@alex_apffel
, an analytical
#chemist
, made everything about science when I was growing up. Here we are!! His enthusiasm for science, learning, and innovation has always been a huge inspiration to me.
#WhyIScience
A classmate, who I haven’t even met in person yet bc of online school, just sent me a Starbucks gift card because she found out I haven’t seen my family in a year and I can’t go home for thanksgiving. She wanted to let me know she is here for me. Take care of each other 💕
Day 3 of medical school and our entire day is dedicated to Racism in healthcare, LGBTQIA+ health, SDOH, and how to understand our local Baltimore community through these lenses. The first of many conversations, but proud of the schools commitment on day 3 to having these convos!
Thank you
@molcellprot
for publishing our work on how an optimized liquid and gas phase fractionation increases HLA-peptidome coverage for primary cell and tissue samples !
@susanklaeger
@BroadProteomics
Not Trump saying "Insulin is so cheap it's like water"..... I'm a 6 week old medical student and I can tell you without a shred of a doubt that people end up in the hospital DAILY from insulin rationing due to insane price gouging.
I’ve been dipping into
#interactomics
-- how proteins interact w/ other proteins and small molecules and how that affects protein function. Here’s an example of a workflow w isobaric mass tags we might use to prep our samples
Extremely thankful and honored to be inducted into AOA tonight with some of my absolute best friends. We have cheered each other on through every step of the way and getting to celebrate this with them was so special!
Extremely proud to be a Maryland student today (and everyday) after getting to hear Dr. Griffith speak at
#ACSCC2023
about the present and future of xenotransplantation!
@UMmedschool
@MarylandSurg
She said... "okay, well you come back here after you get your next one and if you're feeling good I promise I'll get it." The hesitancy towards this vaccine is not going to be solved by forcing more science on people, it's solved by this small personal interactions. (4/5)
Update: Amongst all the madness going on in the world, I somehow listened to my 100th (!!!) virtual medical school lecture today. Feels self centered to focus on that today, but also... I need a small win after this weekends never-ending and depressing news cycle.
Big life update! I got a kitten, moved to Baltimore, and most importantly will be attending University of Maryland School of Medicine in the Fall! I am doing an MD/MS dual degree and could not be more excited. (1/3)
My grandpa grew up in Armenia and Iraq, the Armenian Genocide was something often talked about in my family, the frustration of not having it recognized was felt. 100 years later to see it finally recognized means so much.
If you had asked me a year ago if 2020 would include me dressing up as my own cat for my virtual medical school small group I would’ve laughed.... and yet....
M2 starts tomorrow... but more importantly we are back in person! First time my medical school class will be all together... it's been a long time coming!
Also- Just want to share story to highlight why talking about the vaccine is SO important (even as a first year med student, who admittedly doesn't know much). This morning after my vaccine I went to a local coffee shop to pick up a breakfast sandwich (1/?)
Feeling very full circle as I walked on campus yesterday in a suit.... The same suit I wore for my interview day almost 3.5 years ago, but this time it was for mock residency interviews. The days are long but the years are short!!!
I'm on my pediatric surgery sub-I and man... I love surgery. This has been the best month of medical school so far and I am so unbelievably excited about the future
Seeing my family for the first time in 15 months in ONE WEEK! Things that have changed since I last saw them: a) in med school b) moved to Baltimore c) brother graduated college. I have never had such a big period of change in my life and I can't wait to finally celebrate w them
To see a woman up on that stage tonight means everything to me. To see a Black, South Asian woman up there, gives me hope. Kamala, Madam Vice President, THANK YOU
Thank you to
@UMmedschool
@umdsom
for prioritizing students and trainees in their vaccination efforts. Fully vaccinated as of 7:15 AM, now just need to get through these next 48 of side effects! Next step: get this vaccine out to everyone so we can
#endcovid
Called into a room of a patient in extreme pain. The wonderful team I'm with got to work putting in orders and managing their condition. I played music on my phone and held the patients hand. One day I'll know enough to do the other stuff. Today I got to help by just being there.
But also, it made me think why did I preface it that way? I'm in my third day of school...of course I wouldn't know. And THAT my friends is imposter syndrome creeping in and telling me I don't belong before I've even started. So to fellow M1s... ASK THE Q!!! ALWAYS! (3/3)
I feel so lucky to have gotten the opportunity to get vaccinated. But I’m also thinking about how we can find a way to get this vaccine distributed equitably to everyone.
For now, a huge thank you to Maryland for prioritizing students and trainees ! Let’s

together
Happy National Girls and Women in Sports Day! I had a prof who told me my freshman year I'd have to quit sports if I wanted to go to medical school. And yet, everyday playing softball, being a captain, and learning how to be a team player helps me here.
What is happening right now is white supremacy and MAGA mindset on full display. Trump's silence is an endorsement of the act of domestic terrorism that is currently happening. This is not a protest.
First shadowing experience while in med school is tomorrow. I figured I'd ease into it so I am shadowing in the Trauma Resuscitation Unit at Shock Trauma. 🥴🤠
Just had a meeting with an amazing (female) surgeon who made me feel like being a badass surgeon, and one day having a family, and being happy are not mutually exclusive. And I am BEAMING.
Incredible story of two friends from Baltimore and PG who met before freshman year
@UMBC
and are now MD/PhD students
@umsomadmissions
Listen to the podcast to hear their story and advice they have for those interested in medicine!
I can officially forever say I started medical school online in the middle of a pandemic. Certainly wasn’t what I expected...but nonetheless feeling so lucky to be here surrounded by all the other people who decided yes, now is the time to dive into medicine.
#UMSOM20204
three questions that totally turned my day around today thanks to
@RobinNYC
1. What’s your why?
2. Why not me?
3. What decision would you make if you were twice as strong and twice as confident?
Applicable to my workout and to the last 2 months of M2 leading up to step!
My school had a prematriculation summer program for non traditional students and I almost didn’t do it (bc my ego was like no you don’t need extra help)... today was my first real lecture and MAN am I happy I did that program.
Not every mentor comes from your professional field...one of mine came from the softball field: I owe a lot to
@Amherst_SBall
Coach Johnson, who gave me the opp and support to be a captain and learn first hand about leadership. That will stay with me throughout my life & career.
The medical student experience is being anxious about having to find a new room in the hospital on the first day of a clinical assignment, showing up 30 minutes early, finding it quickly, and then hiding in the bathroom for 15 min.
First day of the last rotation of medical school! Super excited to be rounding out my experience with a Palliative Medicine rotation. Excited to keep learn more about how palliative medicine goes hand in hand with surgery!
@Surgpallcare
Feeling inspired by all of the powerful women in my life who have demanded a seat at the table, and are working everyday to make the world a more just and equitable place. How lucky were we to have RBG fighting for us. May she rest in power, may we honor her with our actions.
Hey Twitter fam- real dedicated for step1 starts on Saturday… feeling a bit nervous about how those 5 weeks will go. Anything you did that you would recommend? Not recommend? Tips and tricks welcome!
When my pre med mentees text me that they got a med school interview invite >>>>>>> absolutely makes my day!!! Honestly one of the best parts of being med school is getting to help others get here.
trauma sim lab today got to practice a central line, a chest tube, a FAST exam, and an intubation. Unreal that one day that will be on a real person. Lots more practice before then!
I just walked up to the mass spec and a 371 peak came up, walked away and it went away... went to google what that peak could be and it's some sort of polysiloxane.... which happens to be the first inactive ingredient in the deodorant I just put on.... MS WORKS!

The science is great, and it's there, and we should offer to work through that with people too. but ultimately, let's all keep talking, sharing our experiences, being transparent about the process. It's the only way we are going to
