A tradie, at my house for a repair, kept staring at me. I had all my wits about me in case he did anything untoward (unfortunately the way these days 😬). But after 45 mins of utter awkwardness he finally blurts out 'Um- I think you took out my appendix'. 🤣 #ILookLikeASurgeon 🔪

You’re 24x more likely to become a doctor if your parents were doctors, compared to those whose parents did any other type of work. Similarly, you’re 17x more likely to become a lawyer if your parents are lawyers. Here’s how it varies among the elite professions.

GP IS A SPECIALTY GP IS A SPECIALTY GP IS A SPECIALTY Same length of training, same training structures, same model of specialist college, same two-tier general and specialist registration with AHPRA. It's just rank arrogance for any layperson to think they 'could be a GP'. 🤨

My teenage goddaughter who is hoping to be a doctor asked why I never wanted to specialise or was it that I couldn’t so I became a GP? I’m a GP by choice. GPs are specialists in risk management and communication. I’m privileged to share in so many peoples lives. #teamGP ❤️

Best Zoom meeting opener ever. The Chair is tucked up in bed, complete with beanie. 'I'm in Christchurch, it's f*cking freezing, you Aussies always want to start at 7, I'm going to bed after this. Ok let's start'. 🤣❄

So, having been on call all weekend, can I please remind all doctors that we treat WHOLE HUMANS and not just their scan(s)? A normal scan does *not* mean you get to block a referral, discharge a patient still in pain, or decide that someone is 'making it up'.🤨

The things that have been 'invented' in surgery that women have been doing for centuries! The 'Aberdeen hitch' is chain stitch. Overlocking running sutures = blanket stitch. And the principles of placing hernia mesh are the same as patching knit fabrics. #ILookLikeASurgeon

@hot_garnish @OrthopodReg I still remember throwing a locked suture really easily the first time CD showed me it... he asked where I knew it from it.. ‘Brownies - I’ve got my quilting badge’ 🤣 the look on his face was priceless

I brought afternoon tea for a surgical meeting and was met with 'are those to eat, or is it your sewing?' It's to eat, I replied. But apparently it's quite common in Australia to keep sewing supplies in cookie tins! #Straya

Dear school educators, If you ask the girls, and only the girls, to stay behind so they can be told that spaghetti straps/tank tops are banned at school camp for 'comfort/sun safety' then you are, in fact, not concerned about comfort or sun safety, but policing women's bodies.🤨

If the student wasn't motivated to learn surgical anatomy already, I reckon they'll be even less keen after being mocked on social media by a resident who seems to think peritoneum and fascia are layers of the skin. 😖 #OperateWithRespect #MedEd

Overheard in play area- 🧒🏼 asks parent about #BlackLivesMatter (Me: 😬, debating what I say/do if the response is awful) Parent: Well poppet, how boring would art be if you only had white crayons? You need all the colours to draw the best pictures. *That* is #parenting .❤

The referral- '56 yo oddly dressed black man, presenting with X'... He was a Samoan man wearing a *lavalava* having just officiated at a ceremony. Let's be mindful that descriptors like 'well dressed' 'pleasant' or 'dishevelled' may reflect our cultural norms and biases. 1/2

@sue_ecampbell @D_Melissa2 We did have a good laugh about it afterwards. You're right, if I can find a way to smash stereotypes while bringing people with me (not alienating them), I will. 🤗❤️

Disappointed to see un-inclusive language in your publication, @ABCaustralia . This phrase is a siren call for hatred. 🤨

Dear on call consultant of another specialty- a growly 'don't you know it's Xmas?' is not justification to decline a referral nor speak disrespectfully to a registrar.🤨 And no, I'm not taken in by your faux politeness now. I heard how you spoke to the reg. #OperateWithRespect

All the #MedEd and #CultureChange IS WORTH IT. I only have brief visual memories- little snapshots. But they are of people I trained, or trained with, at the bedside, looking concerned. My overwhelming sense was of peace and relief at seeing them. I knew I was in safe hands. 6/13

I was in two minds about the new 'kindness' guidance from the GMC; it felt like a good intention poorly phrased. I've changed my mind. This is such a clear example of how 'kindness' is used to threaten trainees into silence. We don't need 'kindness', we need *safety* #MedTwitter

So for the #fashionistas who asked- this is a 1940s original passed down to me from my great-aunt Harriet who passed on last year aged 102. She was a #feminist who never married and I invoke her bolshiness every time I wear it. 💪💪💪

Just because we're not likely to achieve actual zero #COVID19 doesn't mean we shouldn't aim for it. The 'let it rip' version of 'living with COVID' is a bit like saying, we'll never be Olympians, why bother teaching kids to swim? Just let them drown, and let's have freedom. 😑

I made this tapestry pillow thirty years ago for a friend who was a keen angler. For thirty years it's sat near his favourite spot on the couch, zealously kept away from the cat, vacuumed gently once a year. Now he's died, the pillow has been gifted back to me. Such feelings. 💔

Think twice about rushing to visit unwell colleagues. I hesitate to post this shaky selfie, but I will- because I need to stress how dishevelled, how unable to perform social niceties I was. (Also how badly those one-size-fits-all gowns fit😬) 7/13

@UniofNewcastle @thegradmedic I think there are 3 approaches to 'all pt comments = student feedback'- 1. Get SPs that aren't rank misogynists 2. Get examiners who aren't rank misogynists so they can correct the situation immediately 3. Get staff who aren't rank misogynists so they can correct it on review. 😒

@Ortho_Cherry Hubby is a 1st gen doctor with parents who didn't complete high school because that wasn't an expectation for labourer's kids in the 70s. I'd grown up surrounded by medical texts and he'd grown up without even a bookcase in the house. It really opened my eyes to my privilege.
