Race is a social construction. That means the logics, terminology, meanings of race and Blackness will shift from location to location and from one time period to another. The US is not the only context of racialization in the world.

Black folk unaware or unappreciative of these racialized contexts outside their countries of origin should simply respect and call people what they'd like to be called in the context of their own system of racialization understanding that the context is distinct from their own.

@surlybassey @mimoyd1 Also for me it plays with comforting tropes of Black women as caretakers of white folk. In this case the Black woman is no longer in the kitchen or serving as a nanny but she’s still essentially there to take care of the main (white) character’s needs.

This statement is not it. It is condescending, defensive, and not in the spirit of intellectual dialogue. The junior scholars who put their careers on the line to speak back to power are horrifically misrepresented here. It is curious how violence is being imagined in this +

About Tiafoe and the response from fans re: the Sinner match. Sinner has every right to be annoyed about Tiafoe’s use of the crowd. His fans (btw I’m one of them) are also free to share his annoyance. I do hope with some retrospection Sinner will reconsider and see that…

I hate stories like this. They are heartwarming for sure. But what they also do is normalize working folk doing the labor that should be provided by the state, normalize the lack of public transportation infrastructure and normalize the payment of non living wages.

@CCSMOOTH13 @MakeItWayne15 People enjoy and celebrate Blackness when it is unthreatening or when it can be used against another Black person. Easy to like Frances when he is not a threat. Different when he’s beating top 10 players and making deep runs at majors. Frances has been the same all this time.

@Holygrail2 @BenRothenberg Here’s the thing. Done correctly, tennis actually could be a perfect socially distanced sport. Lines and score can be called electronically. The umpire in that case could be present but not on court to mediate any disputes, and players are rarely within 6 ft of one another.

@prof_carrington Also Venus who made the successful argument for equal pay for women at the Slams. She literally met with the stuffy officials at Wimbledon the night before her 2005 Championship match.

@VocalistLavanya @christophclarey Greek yoghurt is not a slur or xenophobic. Did you actually hear what Tiafoe said and did you actually understand the context in which it is being said? Go back and listen carefully. He did not use Greek yoghurt in a defamatory manner. Please stop with this.

@vanshv2k This next gen makes it difficult. Medvedev’s temper and racist rants, Zverev’s credible abuse allegations, Tsitsipas’ anti-vax stance. I can’t really get behind any of them. To be fair at least Med apologized for the racist rant but still.

@_Nwai @lelowhatsgood White people are rewarded for studying, speaking, and teaching African languages. Black people are not. This is the thing that should change. I had some great Zulu lecturers but half of my instructors were non-Black when I took Zulu classes at UKZN in the early 00s.

@Racquettechie Actually I like the Rich Mnisi collab with adidas, I generally like Mnisi’s stuff and I like a good African print. But I lived in South Africa for a few years and have a soft spot for when local (SA) talent can get global deals. The men’s outfit is horrid though!
