Apparently, if you steal a £70k car, get caught driving it, blow 103 at the roadside and then officers go on to find £30k worth of stolen property at your house the appropriate sentence is….
***7 day custodial (suspended)***
How have we ended up like this…?
After an unexpected 19 hour shift (due to an urgent assistance at the end) the resulting prisoner shared several things with me;
- Urine
- Excrement
- Saliva
- Snot
- Many hurty words
After all that, they still got to eat, drink & sleep long before I did.
The system works.
Male arrested for concerned in supply.
Quantity of cash in ‘deal’ bundles.
Text messages titled ‘deal line’.
Broadcast messages discussing drugs, weights and cost over multiple days / weeks / months.
Small quantity of class B.
Job handed over.
Com Res for possession.
Lessons learned this week:
1. Response policing often doesn’t get the kudos it deserves given the service it performs
2. Talking to people is one of the most important skills for frontline officers
3. Accept Nothing, Believe No one, Challenge Everything

If you’re going to advertise a L2 mobilisation for your SC’s, the hard working people who give up much to support the organisation, they will start rearranging their lives almost immediately.
When you say 3.5 hours later that it’s a test, they are going to be very irritated.

The last time I intervened off duty on the tube (against my better judgement);
- Spat at in the eye and mouth
- Months of worry about infectious disease
- Assumption I was assaulting suspect & attempts to stop me
- Compensation award paid at £2.50 a month
Thankless task.
Intervening off-duty on the underground without any support, comms or PPE is high risk. I will endeavour to make contact with the officer concerned tomorrow to thank him for his service and provide him with any support necessary.

Another year we’re not given the same protections as colleagues in BTP, for reasons that are still unclear to me.
Lost count of the number of suspects we’ve arrested in 2023 alone who were found with knives after being searched.
Why can’t we be afforded the same protection?
It's been a whole year since our first

qualified with Taser.
Open to all Specials, this is a vital tool in de-escalating volatile situations & keeping our officers and the public safe.
We'll keep working on innovative ways to deploy and equip our Specials 👍
As a response driver (in a specialist unit), & because of front line officer number challenges, the organisation has *instructed* the MSC to focus on (I)mmediate calls - a good idea & something I do gladly.
However, I’m not given access to a taser.
Why is my safety optional?
Never did I ever think that finding keys and a wallet in the street would lead me to a burglary, theft of a £100k Range & a load of cash... And being able to ID the suspects with a little detective work and some luck...

Reading lots about retention of SC’s across the country, with various reasons offered.
My 2 cents:
The premise on which we recruit people, i.e you can be an SC on 16 hours a month and be a fully operational competent officer is an outdated concept and needs attention. (1)
Not sure about the rest of the country, but in London retention has to come before recruitment.
We haemorrhage officers regularly, and until that is addressed, the recruitment effort is wholly wasted.
So this evening we have additional colleagues attending our second
#nationalsc
workshop virtually. Lots learnt yesterday and will learn hints and tips again this evening :)
I think there should be some real effort to reinvigorate the Ride Along scheme - particularly in the MPS at the moment. Bring people right into the front line and see what policing in 2020 is really like.
It was in contrast to many experiences where interventions are destructive not constructive.
The power of communities & police working together is not to be underestimated.
A vocal minority seek to constantly divide the public & the police.
A tragedy.
