Despite this story, I'd like to point out that AI junk has obliterated the freelance and other art markets where the need for specifics is less of an issue. This still affects the creative industries in leaving no where for artists to start their careers.

How it started vs how it ended. QRT with your own. Trust the process. This is old, but it bears repeating. Your stuff is gonna look ugly or basic for a while, but early on in a project, or your career, you're building a foundation. Push past that stage and doubt.

Remember that, in California, even if you get severance, you can still receive unemployment. Severance is what's owed to you in lieu of a stable job, but unemployment is yours as soon as you lose your job. You paid CA's high taxes for this safety net, use it. #GameDev #Layoffs

@AntaresValdemar Another recommendation is to not stress too much if one particular art aspect is blocked for you. You can build foundational art skill in other aspects and use them as a foundation to get past it. For example, I'm not good at anatomy drawing, but I've improved after sculpting it

Here's a handy free blender plugin if you use a lot of modifiers (which you should be). It enhances the UI of the modifier stack to be more usable when you have a lot of them. Makes it closer to 3DS Max's modifier panel, including the modifier buttons.

WTF is with some Game Studio QA jobs getting constantly reposted, rejecting thousands (we counted) of highly qualified (we checked) people, then the director comes on saying they're having a hard time finding people. I've seen people apply that match almost perfectly.

For Blender users that don't have MeshMachine yet, you can use the free Edge Flow plugin to help space and flow edges. It's different enough from the included Loop Tools justify having it alongside your other tools. #GameArt #Blender

Hey #Blender #HardSurface game artists, tired of janky normal bakes on what should be flat areas? Try this! Autosmooth ON, set to 180. (Required for some custom normals) Set the border edges to sharp (maya=hardened). Select faces -> Normals -> Set from Faces #b3d #GameArt

Can we get a salary check on the varius anonymous spreadsheets devs have circulating. I have a terrible suspicion that in six months we'll see positions reopen at drastically reduced salaries. There's still a lot of games that need to be made.

There's a difference between pushing yourself and crunching. I got my first art job from pushing myself to do a few hours of art for myself after work, every weekday. Crunching is mindless busy work, you don't learn anything. Crunching gets you, well, as burnt out as I am now.

The fact that artists publish their work online, for free so others can see is sharing as well too. It's not locked in some collector's vault. They do this despite how much artwork is constantly stolen and sold for profit. AI is just a more advanced version of that theft. 4/

Artists already share a lot. Search online and you'll find everything you need to learn to be an artist, or accomplish certain looks. All free and open. It's been this way for decades. I restarted my art career based on free and affordable tutorials, landing a job from it. 3/

#Blender 's UV editor is like the Uncertainty Principle in UI form: You cannot know where on the mesh the UV you're editing is at the same time that you're editing them. UV sync needs to go. It's a weird ancient system that requires 6 extra steps to do basic stuff.

Real talk. You already know if your art skills are lacking, and to get to senior level you're gonna have to push yourself to learn. I believe in you. You can do this in the same way I went from nobody to mid-level. But do it for yourself, set healthy boundaries. Live first.

I wanted to say this a little more kindly. The realities of the game industry now is that you need to have a very good portfolio to get in. Learn those fundamentals, apply them in-engine, and compare your work to stuff in working portfolios. Get feedback and apply it.

#Blender 3.6 added a retopology shading mode in the overlay panel and it's what we've needed for a while now. It only appears in Edit mode, and enabling it displays the edited objects in transparent blue, with the wireframe on top of everything else.

I'm a tech artist now, barely junior level. But, I know code and I know artwork. Artwork is complex enough that they had to develop a machine trained on a lot of artwork and advanced algorithms to kind of produce decent art (but only when copying other artists specifically). 5/

Well, I've been laid off. This was my first art job and also the one where I learned the most, doing a wider variety of tasks I didn't think I was capable of at the time. I'm actually looking forward to what comes next, but first I need to rest and take care of myself.

There's even a dark side to open source software too. From terrible implementations to big corporations getting massive profits off free code, and the coders getting nothing other than exposure for releasing it. And now, code jobs are threatened by AI. Sound familiar? 7/

To conclude, a lot is up in the air about this tech. It's not going away, nor should it. But we need to make sure the technology is developed in an ethical manner. One way is much like how code is under clear licenses, art is protected by copyright unless in the public domain.

Code serves a function. And are functions, or made up of--well you get the point. But I do think there's giant code bases that are effectively art in and of themselves. But it still serves a function. When the end goal is to get something done of course being open seems good. 6/

Had a recent graduate artist take some critique badly tonight. In part, because they'd be taught badly. But it's important to not make excuses for issues and just fix them, especially in production when your lead needs changes. Especially with the competition. #GameArt #GameDev

It's not the end of all things, it just makes an art career process something less of gradual improvement, and more that you need to reach incredible skill faster, and that's a lot to ask for a profession that requires a lot of time, practice and equipment.

I actually got a rejection letter with a nice little addition from them saying they really did like my work, but just that there were too many other candidates with exactly the skills they wanted. So yeah, happy for them but. 🤷 For me.
