Making environments is hard! As I work on the Spanish Town tutorial, I realized that while it took me about 2 months to finish the art blockout (foundation), it took another year to truly finalize it! First half was very logical, second half was more artistic/feeling-based.

๐ŸŽจ #EnvironmentArt tip: I created a simple clump of buildings for my backdrop, and painted it as a prop with a single material in #SubstancePainter , reusing the textures from the map. It's not perfect and I could polish it more, but blends nicely with the playable area โ˜บ๏ธ

One of my favorite custom nodes in Substance is @flownepp 's Blur Polish node. With this bad boy you can instantly turn ugly procedural noises into beautiful surfaces full of gradients and variation. Very powerful node, highly recommended!

A lot of times to make scenes feel warmer, artists make the sun color yellow. Unless the sun is closer to the horizon, this can give an artificial look. Another way is to use white balance. Here's the same scene, exaggerating the effect for demonstration: #HDRP #EnvironmentArt

This is insane. Tango Gameworks made Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire Tokyo, two excellent games. Corporate mentality is such a negative force in this world. It's destroying creativity, the environment, individual freedoms, communities, and our collective health (physical and mental).

When you been having that gut feeling for a while, till the point you leave. Very sad day. Zenimax merger was a big mistake, was a great company that cared for its teams and games. MS money cant buy you love. I feel now for my beloved MG and Arkane.

A big advantage of using #AdaptiveLightProbes for lighting in #Unity , is it generates smooth gradients, which is perfect for Normal Edge #Decals . With #lightmaps , this effect gets broken sometimes, because lightmapping introduces seams. Here's the same area in Unity vs Unreal.

Hereโ€™s an excellent example of a design blockout by Jenny. Before doing any texturing, coloring, or complex modeling, it really pays off to solve the theme and composition of a map in the simplest form, in editor. When this phase is done well, the rest becomes much easier!

After a break, I'm back to working on the Spanish Village tutorial full time! Here's a WIP of my blockout kit, a small library of primitives to prototype levels. It's a pleasure to build levels this way. It's intuitive, fast and everything stays on the grid :) #leveldesign

1hr demo from last night. Gave me a time limit to see if I could create a base to work from. I can finish this in any workflow I want... megascanned textures, stylized tiles, or even paint it all in Substance Painter. No matter the end, the process is the same. #EnvArtMastery

My favorite environment art technique is the "๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต". It consists of making "good enough" assets quickly and hiding how simple they are. The terrain in this backdrop was made out of one mountain mesh made in 30 minutes. The fog does all the heavy lifting on this one๐Ÿ˜„
