One of the worst things about being a BBC Local Radio presenter now… the expectation that we’ll “sell” the new schedules as a good thing. As a presenter, the relationship with my listener comes first, and I’m not comfortable with misleading them or lying.

If your BBC Local Radio station has ever: told you something vital, been a friend in the dark, helped your cause, stuck it to a politician, made sense of mad times, cheered you down Wembley Way, made you smile… please speak up. The changes ARE happening and they WILL stop it all

So many wonderful broadcasters signing off from BBC Local Radio. People who ooze their craft & have honed it over years, while airwaves elsewhere find ever more room for TV names with many talents but no idea of the myriad and nuanced skills required to be masterful on the radio

There’s so much bland, diluted, generic radio around, thanks to crumbling regulation allowing corporates to chase £ with banality. The BBC is supposed to serve the public when others won’t. That’s what BBC Local Radio does… truly unique. And being spaffed away. Unforgivable

May just be me, but increasing mood of resignation in BBC Local Radio. Every iota of fight deployed, every ally mobilised and all to no avail. They just don’t care. A U-turn, at least partial, will come after the event. But so much damage and hurt will already have been caused.

In my commercial days I remember a strategy to build on strong weekday listening figures was to focus on making weekends and evenings an equally consistent offer. The BBCLR idea seems to be weekends and evenings matter a lot less. They. Just. Don’t. Understand. Radio.

Spot on. There have already been times editors wanted to go local but there wasn’t the staff, so it didn’t happen. They simply don’t understand: a lost listener won’t come back for a one-off local (or regional) show. They’ve noticed it’s not what it was, and gone elsewhere.

Chris Burns’ RAJAR email to all: “ No other broadcaster is as closely connected to its audiences and communities as we are”, “a strong quarter for Afternoons”, “ Hard to reach (C2DE) listeners now make up 46% of our total audience.” So let’s piss it all away!

Christ, it even ends up with a rehash of the “best” of the last 3 repeated this morning. And at the end Gaby Logan says “to listen again, go to BBC Sounds and search for your Local BBC station”. We do splits every day now FFS… too much to tailor different versions??! Basic!

This wk on BBCLR: Pop stars talking to Make A Difference winners. Soullessly edited. Stilted, scripted links, 1 hr of 1 artist’s songs, NO local station IDs. 9am! Loved local voices will be in the building! Yet again foisted upon teams by people who simply DON’T UNDERSTAND RADIO

Worse than today’s BBC Local Radio listening figures is this… RAJAR works on rolling 6 month reporting, so this is only half the initial story…

Maybe, just maybe, at one time there was a chance Tim Davie would have been lobbed a question about betraying BBC Local Radio listeners today. So unlikely now, with the current grubby and unedifying distraction.

The BBC's Acting Chair has written to me on local radio. Everything's fine. Everyone was consulted; Ofcom happy; programming "well received by audiences" & restructure was carried out “as efficiently and compassionately as we can”. My letter back is below.

Not “some stations’ output”. All of them. More truthful to say “in all but some cases, on weekday afternoons.” Reads like an attempt to diminish the truth of it, unfortunately What does the future hold for local commercial radio?

THIS. ALL SPOT ON. “The new shared output on BBC local radio will fail. It is a misunderstanding of the role of local radio which is not just about news and sport, but local pride, convivial conversation, friendly voices that also challenge those in powerful positions locally.”
