Happy birthday Rayshawn Miller. Still in awe of how he went from manager, to walk on who played a total of 23 minutes over 2 seasons, to starting 14 games and playing 24.8 mpg in the 2017-18 season.
On this day in 1994 (also the day after Thanksgiving),

UMass opened the season with a monster matchup against
#1
Arkansas, the defending national champ. Lou Roe dominated, leading the Minutemen to a 104-80 beat-down of the Razorbacks.
When the MAC news broke, I had concerns that Frank might be apprehensive about UM's future. "This isn't what I signed up for" would be totally understandable.
Seems clear that he's all in, and UM is all in, with the upped investments in staff compensation.

Frank postgame:
Intensity was set the last 2 days after the La Salle stumble, no blaming, no pouting, put in the work.
Guys are figuring it out, freshmen are way ahead.
Keon's toughness.
Matt couldn't catch yesterday, toughed it out.
Best D from Cohen all year. He's re-engaged.
25 years ago today...
UMass hosts a huge non-conference game, as Roy Williams brings his
#15
Kansas Jayhawks to Amherst. Bruiser and the Minutemen send them home with a loss.
Mike Babul goes home.
Babul, UM class of 2000, was a 3x A-10 Defensive Team member.
Great shot of him on Paul Pierce in '97. Pierce shot .513 from the floor that season (97-98), but on that night Babul and UM's D held him to .357 (5-14).
North Attleboro has hired Mike Babul as its new boys basketball coach, per school release. Babul played for the Rocketeers and was the 1996 Gatorade Player of the Year for Massachusetts. Multiple college coaching stops and in the NBA G League as well.

As the time crept past 10 PM, the CBS camera caught Ellen Calipari providing a little support to daughter Megan. Even with the crowd noise going into the final minute, late is late when you’re a little kid.
10 years ago today: UMass beats Boston College at TD Garden, 86-73, to open our season.
It's a shame that BC doesn't lose to us, I mean, play us, anymore.
On this day in 1978: UConn snaps a three-game losing streak to UMass by defeating the Minutemen, 56-49 at the Hartford Civic Center. A few hours after the final buzzer, the roof of the Civic Center collapses under the weight of a heavy snowfall.
Davonte Higginbottom
@And1Davonte
finishes the season, and possibly his playing career, with 100% from three and total FG.
Thank you, Davonte. Looking forward to seeing what's next for you.
Frank postgame:
Guys cared about regrouping after the Bona setback, was disappointing to let the 7k fans down
Good practice yesterday carried into today
Compliment to Ricky Harris who was there
Stop with the can't win on the road chatter
Fun group to be around

UMass versus Providence.
Derrick Gordon hits a putback in the final seconds of overtime to give UMass the 69-67 victory, and improve the UM record to 11-1.
On this date in 1992...
UM wins their first Atlantic 10 Tournament title, 97-91 over West Virginia, in a packed Cage.
Four Minutemen are honored to the All-Tournament Team:

, Lou Roe, Jim McCoy, and

30 years ago, right about now, The Cage was rockin', ready for The Final Rage to commence.
Were you there? I was fortunate to be in the student section crowd.
Its hard to imagine a UMass sports byline without Vautour's name in it. Happy for Matt moving to the next chapter in his career, but sad to think that this is an end of an era.
I’m excited to announce I’ve accepted a sports columnist position at MassLive. I’m incredibly thankful for 20 great years at the Daily Hampshire Gazette and excited for this opportunity.
Pip's 44 is the easy headline grabber, but shout out to
@_CarlPierre_
. His numbers: 39 of 45 minutes played, 25 points, 10-16 FG (.625), 3-7 3FG (.429), 2-2 FT (1.000), 4 boards (2 off, 2 def), plus an assist, block, steal, and zero turnovers.
Things
@UMassWBB
did in the past week:
- Won at Fordham for the first time since 2009
- Won at Dayton for the first time since 2007
Get behind this team, they're a special group.
Just waiting on the formality of RJ Luis being named A-10 Rookie of the Week. They should give him Player of the Week also, with these numbers from the Richmond and Duquesne games:
13-23 FG (.565)
26-28 FT (.929) 👀🔥
27.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.5 apg

UM. Stock for both was very high, with many saying they both would have been early picks had they opted for the '95 Draft.
Last home game of the season tomorrow night.
@cjanderson_23
has represented us well, finishing his bachelor's degree in 3 years, and given everything he has to this team. Get out to
@MullinsCenter
and give him a Senior Night standing ovation.
Matt Vautour column on the MAC move:
Matt is former Collegian Sports, UM Athletics beat writer for the Gazette for many years, so he knows what he's talking about.
So, UMass fans, you're running out of time. There are just 3 home games left for
@UMassWBB
.
Just 3 more chances to see Breen and Philoxy do their things, their recordbook setting things, their deliver a title things.
Get it done. Show up, in person, and support this team.
1 year ago today, we actually got a guy to show up at the press conference. Seriously now, very happy with what
@CoachMattMcCall
was able to do with the hand he had this past season. Looking forward to the future!
35 years ago today: John Calipari named head coach at UMass.
With zero head coaching wins to his name at the time, Calipari's intro press conference was at the Basketball Hall of Fame, where he would eventually be enshrined 27 years later.
Frank postgame:
Proud of the effort
Adjusted on D
Reserves helped the regulars in practice
Happy for Davis’s night
Credits Anthony Evans and Brett Nelson on the scouting report
Desire to compete was there
Cohen is re-engaged with effort, beyond just scoring
UM will go into the A10 Tourney with its highest seed in 5 years. As the 8, the naysayers will say that’s lame. Go ahead if you want. I’ll take it as another sign of progress, and that the future is bright.
#LetsGoUMass
The next chapter starts now for Djery Baptiste.
Someday in the future when you're a diplomat and you get to the United Nations, we want to see that picture when you're towering over your colleagues :)
Thank you, Djery.
17 years ago today: UMass takes down defending national champ UConn. Rashaun Freeman was so pumped up after he hit the game winning shot, he jumped up on a courtside table with time still left on the clock 🤣
NEWS: UMass F Matt Cross is expected to make his return Tuesday night against Saint Joseph’s, per Frank Martin.
Martin said he had oral surgery to repair his tooth that he chipped against Dayton. Cross missed the last three games, the Minutemen being 1-2.
Big news for UMass.
As much as today's loss was hard, it's still nice to see stuff like this: the former manager turned walk-on gets the entire crowd in his corner on Senior Day.
I don't recall UM ever getting on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but we certainly got some inside coverage back in the day.
A few pictures that come to mind...
#RIP
Yesterday was tough. After winning 6 of our last 8, and elevating into double-bye territory, having it all end suddenly was hard to swallow.
But we won 20 for the first time in quite a while, and that's a step in the right direction.
Onward!
Hey
#UMass
I needed 2 separ8 from yesterday’s game.
On behalf of all of us
@UMassMBB
thk u.
I’m so proud of our players. They emptied the tank 2 gv us all a program 2 once again be proud of.
Losing hurt. that will not diminish our teams growth.Stick w us we will get there🚩🏀
UM shows up with a 22-point win over VCU, their largest margin ever over the Rams. 74-52 from The Bill.
Extra day of rest as UM is back in action on Saturday, at home for Bonaventure.
Refs call it over, UM prevails, 69-67!
UM improves to 19-10 and 10-7, also gathers their 4th road win of the season, most since the DK era.
19 wins is our most since 2013-14, and 9 conf wins most since 2014-15.
Get to The Bill as UM closes out the reg season on Wed versus FOR.
30 years ago tonight, the
@MullinsCenter
held its grand opening, the
@UMassMBB
game versus West Virginia.
The event didn't disappoint: an OT win for UM in front of a sold-out crowd and the ESPN cameras.
UMMBB wouldn't lose on that floor for over two years.
Frank postgame:
Hurt feelings after Loyola, team got over it and started defending.
Bishop held to 2-14, Keon and Curry did well on him.
Happy for Rahsool’s career day. Frank ran a consecutive play for him to keep him going.
Our young guys continue to grow.
UM went 1-6 from the line in the final 21 seconds.
Cross fought his way into offensive rebounds, extra UM possessions, and critical time off the clock, in two of those sequences. Without that scrap, we might have collapsed again.
Frank on today's UM media session...
Keon update:
He's good. Full go in practice yesterday and today, nothing lingering. Extra rest (UM was the only A-10 team off last weekend) helped.
Solid win for the Minutemen, 87-79 over WV.
Best win of the Frank era so far.
UM goes to Hawai'i at 6-2, faces Georgia Tech on Thursday at 9 PM Eastern.
Mama DeGray is going to like this one. Ronnie's your obvious choice for player of the game.
42 minutes, 21 points (led UM), 7-9 FGs, a crucial 3 in overtime, 6-8 from the stripe, 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, top efficiency rating of all players.
Congrats to UMass alum
@CoachTonyBarbee
CMU went 7-23 in his year 1, 10-21 last season, but upped it to 18-13 so far this season. They went 12-6 in the MAC, their most conference wins since 2015.
