NEWS: UMass F Matt Cross is expected to make his return Tuesday night against Saint Joseph’s, per Frank Martin. Martin said he had oral surgery to repair his tooth that he chipped against Dayton. Cross missed the last three games, the Minutemen being 1-2. Big news for UMass.

Make it +33 for the freshman. 2 PTS, 3 AST, 2 REB, 1 BLK — Ndjigue’s stat line doesn’t pop out, but he’s utility player who can do a little of everything. A lot of the work he puts in won’t show up in the box score, but obviously Frank Martin recognizes his importance.

Packed house here in Springfield as UMass legend and Hall of Famer Dr. J ( @JuliusErving ) joins center court for a “Hoophall Hangout.” I’ve been told by several HOF employees that this, outside of enshrinement, is by far the biggest turnout out of all the events this summer.

Martin also said Cross’ ankle is fully healed, that wasn’t the problem. The worry is Cross catching another elbow or blow to the jaw/mouth area. But he practiced fully today, and barring any setbacks, will play in some capacity tomorrow.

Frank Martin says he’s prepared to have to play freshman forward Tyler Mason on Saturday at URI if need be. If Cross can’t go (no word yet), Daniel Hankins-Sanford will step into the starting role — meaning someone has to fill his bench minutes, either Mason or Mathok Majok.

FINAL: St. Bonaventure 75 - UMass 67 Missed opportunity for the Minutemen, plain and simple. By far the biggest crowd on hand, by far the most important game of the year, and they put together one of their worst performances at home all season. UMass drops to 8-7 in the A-10.

HALFTIME: Amherst 50 - Putnam 6. Dion - 346 total yards, 5 touchdowns. The senior played in only four games last season (injury) and had 11 touchdowns. He’s almost halfway to that total after one HALF of football in 2023.

Very successful trip to Hawaii for UMass. Left with two blowout wins and an essential learning lesson for a young group against a good Georgia Tech team. Josh Cohen has established himself as a premier big man in the country as the Minutemen go 2-1 in the DHC and take 5th place.

From an unbiased reporter’s POV, I think Frank’s point is this: There have been UMass coaches with much worse results after one year given longer leashes. 15-16 with several injuries isn’t bad at all. A bunch of 5-stars aren’t walking through the door. Maybe he just needs time?
