DENVER! It’s time. SO excited to introduce a new walking route in time for Spring, ready to explore and love: the DENVER ORBITAL TRAIL (DOT for short!). It’s in the name - an epic 177-mile, 28-segment circle around the region! See more and get walking at .
I feel as though I doubly won the
@anthroreviewed
lottery - I’m in the UK and yet the copy I got is a signed copy, and there’s a little bonus art with the signature! So excited that it finally arrived!!
If your emergency response agency opposes bike lanes because they slow emergency response times and then you use bike lanes because they actually speed up emergency response times that should be a big deal
There’s like six pubs on this square and it’s even got the Christmas lights, but nope, parking for nine vehicles is more important than creating a world class public space
I believe in Law and Order so much that I have a Thin Blue Line sticker on my truck yet not so much that I won’t park in front of a fire hydrant and purposefully conceal my license plate number with tape
At the Olmsted house, I really appreciated the scale of what was envisioned for Boston’s Emerald Necklace - a green chain of “jewels” round the neck of the city. I immediately thought, “what a great walk!” so this weekend, I’m walking the whole necklace. Follow along here!!
I took three trains across the country this week and all I could think about most of the time was how Amtrak just doesn’t know how trains work, trains run and are generally on time and all that, but like, the passenger experience is just baffling, it’s just not how trains work
What I don’t understand is like… Oxford is not like full of free parking and space to drive around - where do all these people in cars think they’re going, realistically?
we have a group riding the Little Illinois route on Sunday at 4pm. Start and end in the Logan Square area.
DM for route and specific meeting location. 13mph party pace
The best part of these videos is the constant flow of people walking down the pedestrianised street in the background - do they not have freedom of movement? If they were driving down that street, would they be freer? Would the businesses be doing better?
“We want you to stay and enjoy Golden, Colorado, but also we’ve gotta open the street back up, folks!”
Someone needs to tell
@CityofGolden
that THIS is what Washington Ave looks like when it’s open! Name something better for business than this!
Biked down some main bike thoroughfares in Cambridge and Somerville this evening and was proper amazed by what i saw - bike traffic jams, people on bikes outnumbering cars, just incredible - build it and they will come, truly
My favorite part of Twitter is I can get irrationally invested in tiny street changes in places that don’t affect me in the slightest: They changed the bollards on SF’s Lake Street? There’s a new school zone in the outskirts of Bristol? Hell yeah, give me all the details
I love for its geo-referenced historic maps of Boston. Recently, I came across these 1770’s maps. Amazed by how much landfill there’s been in the past few centuries, I’m walking the historic coastline of the city, as best as I can to see! Follow along!
@PotCzach
I totally agree???? If you google it all the results are like “YOU CANT LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE FOR EVEN A MILLISECOND” and I just find that remarkably hard to believe???
Once again I’m off! Second to last mini vacation this week: walking across the Isle of Wight!! Thanks to
@SlowWaysUK
, the journey planning was easy, and I know I’ll have plenty of small towns to stop off in. Ryde -> Bembridge -> Sandown -> Shanklin -> Ventnor -> Yarmouth!!
AND I’M OFF!! My attempt to answer the question (and set the new record for) “How far can a person get in 24 hours using only public buses in the UK?” begins in 6 hours!! I can now reveal my starting point to be… Northampton!!! Wish me luck tomorrow!!🤞🚌😁
Alright world it’s time for my next adventure! Four
@SlowWaysUK
over two days: Oxford -> Standlake -> Faringdon -> Highworth -> Swindon!! I call it “OxSwi” and it features a very special reward at its end… follow along for the next few days to find out what it is!!
The
@MBTA
Orange Line shutdown is wild. It's got me thinking: can you still get to every stop along the route by transit? Tomorrow, follow along as I find out! The catch - I'm in London, so this might take a bit of
@UKinBoston
creativity (forgive any upcoming name-a-likes…)🤪
@sam_d_1995
1) it’s not about aesthetics, in fact
2) it’s not going to be demolished but the building will be improved / the council will get money for more housing
3) it’s bad, actually, for a developer to propose and get approval for one building and then build something different
Bit of a difficult morning, so decided to walk home from school instead of taking the train and clear my head. And with that, I’ve now completed my 50th and 51st
@SlowWaysUK
routes!! Walking really does wonders, huh 🐌😁🚶
And I’m off! I’ll do my best to live-tweet my
@SlowWaysUK
adventure today. If all goes well, I’ll walk from Maidenhead to Wendover and bring three routes up to “fully verified” in the process! I’m a bit nervous for the distance but so excited to spend the day traveling by foot.🐌
Giving my final presentation today about the research I’ve been doing about the
@SlowWaysUK
network for my dissertation! I don’t have a snail tie, but I figure a sloth tie does a pretty good job evoking “slow,” no?
Ever since
@MilesPerHoward
unveiled the Boston Walking City Trail () I’ve been so eager to explore it! I live in London, so it was quite the wait, but while in Boston this week I took the chance to walk a segment. And boy was I not disappointed:
And I made it!! Follow along as I walk the
@SlowWaysUK
route from Berwick to Alnwick,
#Beraln
Three, over the next three days. It’s the second longest route in the network, and it’s been one I’ve wanted to tackle for a long time.. SO excited to be here.🐌🚶😁
Thanks to
@MilesPerHoward
for alerting me to the existence of the Worcester East-West Trail, a 14-mile, cross-city hiking experience connecting 20 parks and green spaces, a challenging and joyful trek. Had to give it a whirl! Great walking; a great day out!
Imagine if at an airport, instead of saying something like “Delta Flight 474 to Miami now boarding,” they just said “Delta Flight 474 now boarding” - someone needs to tell Amtrak no one knows their train number (or, more accurately, no one ought to know their train number)
And we’re off!!! I have NO idea how this weekend will go or exactly where I will go even, but I will be using
@SlowWaysUK
to pioneer routes in a part of the country I’ve never been to! I’ve been looking forward to this trip for six weeks! Fingers crossed it goes well!!
Our crews have started paving the cycle track on Washington Street, it is not open to the public yet and is still an active construction site. Use caution.
We’re 7 days out, so I'll finally share my
@Amtrak
USA rail pass adventure! Wish me luck as I spend 132 hrs and 6,156 mi in coach 🤪 Also, of course, I will be live-tweeting my journey (the highs - NYE in New Orleans! - and the lows - 27.5 hours the next day to DC). Here we go!!
Long and hot
@SlowWaysUK
walk today, with this sign capturing it perfectly! I walked 22 miles: Frome -> Maiden Bradley -> Bruton. I’ll share more thoughts and pictures once I’m cooled down and full of Oreos and Irn Bru Xtra on the train home!!
The driver of this $150,000 car knows it’s not ok to park in a bus stop and inconvenience the riders of the 64 because he saw me taking pictures of his car, rushed out, and said “WHAT, CAN I NOT PARK HERE?”
Maybe this is intentional for x,y,z reasons but man, you’ll have a hard time convincing me things are going totally normal and well for Eurostar passengers at St Pancras
Such a testament to the good work of planners all over Boston that the vast, vast majority of this 33-mile ride was safe and comfortable, what a great afternoon out! (Bonus points if u can guess where the pic is from)
I learned about a new thing this week at work and then I learned that one of only like five in the world (my guess, could be way off) is in Boulder and so yes I drove up yesterday just to see… THE SPEED KIDNEY
I love the reply guys here being like “but without pavement parking there won’t be enough space on the road and we’ll have to block traffic!” because they are SO close to getting it
In the meantime, enjoy these pictures from the park city of Boston, which, like New York City, is unlikely to get congestion pricing by the end of the month
I've been thinking for a while of making something similar to the
#30DaysWild
challenge for
@SlowWaysUK
and I finally got around to it! Anyone up for joining me for
#30DaysofSlowWays
in January??🐌🚶
(p.s. yes, I know January has 31 days but I didn't want to wait until April...)
Boston Common predates Olmsted by a lot, but functions as an iconic end to the Emerald Necklace. Originally abutting the Charles (why do you think Charles St is called that?), the common was set aside in 1634 for the use of all. America’s oldest public park! Still got it, too.
I gotta say, Chiswick High Street has got the space distribution pretty damn near perfect to make a pleasant experience for people. Really refreshing to find a great example in greater London!!
Tomorrow I leave for a 4-day UK train holiday that doubles as a dissertation fact-finding and walking adventure! Going to four cities (2 new, 2 I love, none near each other!!). Over 4 days I'm anticipating ~13.5 hours on trains and at least 6
@SlowWaysUK
routes! I can't wait!!
@joncstone
Right?? This one really left me gobsmacked. The cars are stacked in so they can’t all be used that often, the Christmas lights make a perfect place, there really are that many pubs, the road dead-ends here so no one’s trying to drive through, such an absurd lost opportunity
Pretty cool how there’s basically only one obvious gap in this commute and there’s a current project in place to fill it, say what you will about biking in Boston but it’s really amazing how far we’ve come (not to say there isn’t so much more work to do obvs, but, still)
Scenes from a morning spent on the Coast Starlight, headed north through the mountains of Oregon!!! This ride is awesome. Love having a roomette, I’ll say it; this is joyful
And that’s a successful
@SlowWaysUK
route walked - Bakewell to Darley Dale! It’s already snailed, but I hadn’t walked it 😅 A lovely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ route! Next stop: Matlock!
Today was just incredibly lovely!! Spent the day with a
@SlowWaysUK
crew on Burmel two out of Melbourne, and on the train back home now. Beautiful scenery, interesting sights to see along the way, and fantastic company!! Can’t wait to do it again soon!! 🐌😁
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!
Leading my first guided walk tomorrow night for some coworkers, scoping it out one final time today, safe to say I love this walk, and I can’t wait to bring people on it!
I came totally for the spectacle of it all, and there is of course a great spectacle about a great queue, but it really did turn out to be much more meaningful to me than that. I dunno, I’m not sure I’d recommend it, but I’m not sure I wouldn’t recommend it either. Now to sleep.
I’m here at 225th St Station, on the Broadway Bridge off the island of Manhattan, because I’ve come to NYC with one goal in mind: to walk the length of Manhattan along Broadway!! No a little rain won’t stop me. Castle Clinton or bust, 14 miles to go, here I come!!
Happy to offer some reflections on my 2021 with
#SlowWays
! This year, I walked 40 routes (239 miles!). I liked walking before (last December, I did Hadrian’s Wall with some friends), but
@SlowWaysUK
made me more excited about walking here than I could’ve ever imagined.
Lovely (but hot, overgrown, challenging, and interrupted by many transport problems) 200th route with my
@SlowWaysUK
walkin’ buddies!! So grateful everyone could make it to Milton Keynes for a last hurrah walk before I head to Denver!!! Feeling very 🥰🥰
Today, if all goes well (aka I’m not deterred by potentially very rainy conditions) I’ll be walking two
@SlowWaysUK
routes—Romsey to King’s Somborne and then on to Winchester! I call it “RomWin.” Psyched to get outdoors and on the network!!
I MADE IT!!! Hit all 20 Orange Line stops, from Oak Grove to Forest Hill(s) in 11 hours and 38 minutes, using only 11 buses and 21 trains!! Not sure what the deeper meaning here is, other than “unhinged transit adventures are moderately fun”! Good times!
The Back Bay Fens park is so good. A true jewel of the Emerald Necklace! It’s got great recreation. Great “borrowed views” (a term I learned at the Olmstead House, about how you can make your park feel bigger than it is!). Great meandering paths. Alas, onward I go!
@JenniferNassour
Quick clarifying question—you’re okay with all those cars on the beautiful and historic Comm Ave mall? What if I told you the Comm Ave mall was built in a time without cars? Seems like something other than 1 Bluebike has disrupted the beautiful and historic character of Comm Ave
You know the drill… same as yesterday, arrive and do a couple
@SlowWaysUK
routes! This morning, first up, Gloucester to Innsworth, a special route for two reasons:
1) The first review in all of Gloucester!!
2) MY 1,000TH SLOW WAYS KILOMETRE!! What a joy it’s been.🐌😁🚶
I’m on the scotrail service to oban and this well dressed gentlemen followed by a film crew got on and apparently I’ve now interloped on a BBC travel documentary? Wild huh
Here, left turning drivers are under incredible pressure to take advantage of infrequent gaps across 2 oncoming lanes. When they get a gap, they’re turning fast. They’re just not thinking about or looking for pedestrians - who HAVE A WALK SIGNAL. It’s criminally unsafe. Fuck this
Boulder Police Investigating Fatal Traffic Crash
BOULDER, Colo. – The Boulder Police Department is investigating a fatal crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred this morning.
At approximately 9:18 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, officers were called to the
