Product Designer & Connected Vehicle Data Specialist focused on reducing CO2e emissions via modes sustainable mobility. 75% of trips by active travel (FY2021).
Today, whilst cycling 17mi across London, I witnessed the most number of people I've seen cycling in this great city in 14 years. It was absolutely phenomenal and breathtaking. Bike boxes were overspilling at every junction and the spectrum of diversity was huge. What a delight.
Spotted on Bellenden Road. For £194,169 you can get a vehicle which:
🚛 Doesn't fit in London parking bays
🏎️ Has a top speed of 190mph in a city with an average speed of 9.7mph
🌍 Produces as much CO2 per km as 421 E-Bikes
🐌 Slower than an E-Bike for most trips in London
💪🏾
1/ The
@nationaltrust
has a car problem.
This was Cliveden yesterday. This is not the main car park. This isn't even the overflow car park. This is the overflow of the overflow car park. It's not even a car park, it's supposed to be a green space.
No parking issues, no needles to clean up, a bit of exercise, no air pollution, no CO2, no traffic congestion contribution. Merry Christmas London! 🎄♥️
1/ Having been advocating for E-Cargo bikes at Toyota since 2019, I am very pleased to share that Toyota France will now be selling E-Cargo bikes at hundreds of its dealerships. This is a HUGE win for society.
Since 2016, I have been paying £10 to £12 per filter so that I can get to work without inflaming my lungs and getting regular chest infections. ULEZ and policies which support cleaner air are critical.
I've been commuting into London by bike since 2009 and I have never seen so many people on bikes in January. London absolutely smashing it in 2023 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Just did a 14 minute car trip in 7 minutes on an E-Bike (actually went further to avoid bad air). Yes, it was twice as fast. 200% faster & 4000% cheaper.
We just cycled an E-Cargo bike up Crystal Palace Mountain with a small human and a guitar (first lesson). This short 3 mile trip was 15 MINUTES faster than using a car today. We overtook around 80 vehicles stuck in traffic jams 🎸
1/ An E-Cargo bike is *15 mins* faster than a Bugatti Chiron, passing 52 vehicles when I take a small human and a guitar on a 6 mile round trip to lessons up Crystal Palace Mountain, all for £0.02 in energy! 🤯
Just cycled an 8yr old human and a ukulele 4 miles up and down Crystal Palace Mountain in the rain! I feel ALIVE! You don't need to wear a car in the rain, you just need a coat! Who knew!
Just got back from a 20 min E-Cargo trip which is currently taking 29 mins in a car. I overtook about 80 cars and it cost 40X less.
@ternbicycles
GSD - faster than Lamborghini Aventador.
In the future, you are going to be able to travel around in an autonomous electric vehicle, leaving you free to pursue leisure, social or work activities.
To experience the future TODAY for only £1.75, get the bus 👌🏾
@TfL
5/ Many locations are currently difficult to access without a car.
💡It would be great to see the National Trust invest in infrastructure which could enable some active travel from public transport to venues.
Hit 3,000 miles on the
@ternbicycles
GSD today. Thats 3,000 car miles & air pollution prevented from the streets of London since 2020. Over 900kg C02e not entering the Earth's atmosphere 🌍
My 8 year daughter just cycled 17km (11mi) through London to get some bits from
@Decathlon
. Not too remarkable until you consider this trip is further than 80% of the car trips in Europe.
1/ When you design shops for the future like
@DecathlonUK
you can actually drive INSIDE to the checkout and load up. Fantastic provision for this in the Surrey Quays store and the staff offered to help me load up the
@ternbicycles
GSD 👏🏾
East Dulwich to Forest Hill this morning (1.4 miles).
🚗 14 mins in a car at 5mph
🚶29 mins to walk at 3mph
🚲 8 mins on a bike at 7.5mph
🚲⚡ 5 mins on an E-Bike at 15.5mph
What's the best tool for the job? 🤔
Crazy numbers of people riding bikes or passengers in bikes on C6 in London tonight! I was in the middle of the peloton in these photos...massive density. Go London! 💥
Going to be using the
@ternbicycles
GSD CSM (Chuffing Super Massive Edition) today which will transport my extended family (5 adults + me) across London. Should be pretty exciting!
@Nobbie2020
My main concern was why did they cheap out and not just go for the Performante? It would have chopped 0.2s off the 0 to 62mph time and that would have made a lot more sense.
Is there really a more glorious way to travel 7 miles to swimming lessons on a Saturday morning with your child on the back? (Norwood Park, South London). Quite expensive though, this trip cost £0.02 in fuel 😱
3/ This is Chartwell where another greenspace is also earmarked as an overflow of the overflow car park.
Please stick to the benches folks as the big green space is reserved for parking.
1/ Why would "hard-pressed British working families" be buying brand new cars? The average new car cost today is £39,308.
You can buy 8 top of the range E-Cargo bikes for that.
6/ Example is Cliveden. It is only 3 miles to Taplow Station which is very well connected. Imagine using a National Trust Shared E-Cargo bike to travel through the glorious countryside.
Problem is Cliveden Road is currently a death trap 💀
1/ This morning I took my biggest parcel EVER (13kg) to the Post Office on the
@ternbicycles
GSD. In the olden days I used a car for this, now it's one more car journey transitioned in London...
Today I hauled 200 litres of compost from
@dulwich_pots
to a job on the
@ternbicycles
GSD. Thanks to the staff for helping me load up inside the garden centre - one of the many growing perks of ultra sustainable mobility 👏🏾🌍 🌲
Just taken a 9 year old human 8.5miles to swimming lessons up the West Norwood Mountain Range in the rain!! In Cumbria we have this incredible technology called waterproof clothing which works really well 💡 ☔
Enough is enough. I call on the UK Government to clamp down on excessively large and heavy vehicles for private use. They only have negative societal impact. Please sign my petition:
London, I will NEVER use a car for unnecessary trips and pledge to do my bit for air pollution and the climate emergency and our collective health. See you at the recycling centre.
Ran analysis on 1,107 of my bike, E-Bike & E-Cargo trips in London from 2013 to 2024.
66.4% of my trips had a faster average speed than a motor vehicle.
If you are using a car in London because you think its faster. Its not.
@citycyclists
Danny - did you see that Bolt were going to take this one step further and limit the vehicle performance based on the rider's behaviour profile? e.g Bad behaviour = reduced performance
@netwench
Also, IKEA now have design principles to try and make as many product lines fit on an E-Cargo bike as possible. Currently 90% of their range can fit on this:
Latest TomTom data shows that London is the slowest place to drive a car. Even vs optimal conditions a bike is 15% faster and 9000% cheaper. Want to get anywhere in London fast or cost effectively? A car is not recommended. Data shown for a 10km (~6 mile) commute.
After several years in research and development, at a cost of several millions, I am pleased to present:
Umbrella attached to a Bike™️ ☔️ 🚲
Passenger arrived at the destination very dry.
Latest data from
@DfTstats
shows that in 2022, 50% of cars exceeded the speed limit on 30mph roads:
• 5% by more than 10mph
• 12% by 5 to 10mph
• 32% by up to 5mph
Vehicle speed-limiters would help here as per E-Bikes and E-Scooters which are restricted to 15.5mph.
@ETSC_EU
We also know from Connected Car data in Europe:
⭐️ 56% of trips are less than 5km
⭐️ For 60% of trips - these vehicles have 1 occupant
It turns out that you don't need a 3,000kg truck to carry 1 human and 500ml of milk 🤯
Everyone loves convenient parking at the supermarket. Well at
@sainsburys
Dulwich you can park your Electric Vehicle 65cm from the front door! Now that's what I call convenience.
Just parked my luxury EV in Mayfair all day for £3 plus £0.06 fuel (thanks
@SpokeSafe
!). These 20th century Bentley's had to pay £65 each and their journey took twice as long. Bad times.
Weekend trip to the garden centre? I've been able to use an E-Cargo bike for 91% of my garden centre trips for the past 3 years. In fact there isn't much parking at the ones near us, so this helps out those that really do need to use a car....
Just had to drop a big package off at
@KingsCollegeNHS
in the rain.
☔️ I avoided getting wet using a waterproof coat & trousers.
✅ My vehicle and all E-Cargo bikes are
#ULEZ
and
#ZEZ
compliant
🅿️ Saved £4.73 in car parking charges.
⏱️ 15 mins faster than a car
1/ Dropped some cardboard off at the Recycling Centre on the way to work...
Lovely chat with one of the
@VeoliaUK
staff who said my posts have helped convince lots more people to use E-Bikes to drop-off stuff ♻️
Be the change you want to see in the world 🌍
Woke up and drew the curtains. It was 3°C outside.
What's the first vehicle I saw coming down my road?
A parent and child on an electric cargo bike. This would not have happened 3 yrs ago...we are making progress!! 💪🏾
The Viking Coastal Trail in Kent is one of the most scenic, child friendly, (mostly) continuous cycle paths I've ridden in UK. My 9yo rode almost 14 miles along the coast. Fantastic day trip.
1/ Road Traffic Estimates for 2022 have been released by the Department for Transport. In distance travelled compared to pre-pandemic levels:
🚗 Cars and taxis: down 7.2% 📉
🚲 Pedal cyles : up 7.4% 📈
🚌 Bus and coach: down 12.3% 📉
2 Adults, 1 Child - School Pickup, then onto Wing Tai Peckham for some Chinese New Year supplies 🧧 4 miles. ✅ Faster than a car, cheaper by 6000% and some exercise. £0.01 fuel cost.
#CostOfLivingCrisis
Hit the 6,000 km mark on the E-Cargo bike.
What that means in practice is:
🚗 Over 650 car trips avoided in London
🌍 1,300kg+ CO2e avoided (Well-to-wheel)
💸 £12.67 total energy cost
🚭 Zero air pollution impact on Londoners
Local businesses like Dulwich Pot and Plant
@dulwich_pots
let you drive E-Cargo bikes like
@ternbicycles
GSD into the shop, making transporting 100 litres of peat free compost much easier than using a motor vehicle. This saves me loads of time and hassle.
Today I got approval at Southwark Recycling Centre to use the ramp & VIP area for the first time ever! E-Bikes now approved for drop-off 🙌🏾 Great job
@VeoliaUK
@lb_southwark
- this makes things a lot easier for sustainable mobility in the borough.
@waxwellmilson
Sterling Landscapes have been using E-Cargo bikes for a good few years now. They said it saves them loads of time for certain jobs and they get to site quicker and easier.
@DanielKorski
Just so everyone's completely clear - on Day 1 you'll introduce measures to increase toxic air in London affecting 9million people and increase widespread health issues? Sounds incredible. 💀 ✅
@nedboulting
Since buying an E-Cargo bike, 90% of local car trips were instantly eradicated. Now car use is restricted only to holidays and some leisure trips. These are high distance, high occupancy, cargo heavy trips.
Another family trip (21km) into London town today on 1 E-Cargo bike. Enabled once again by
@ternbicycles
GSD,
@SpokeSafe
Secure Parking in
@QPark_UK
+ London infra. £3.03 return for 2 Adults + 1 Child + all day parking in Chinatown + fuel. Great way to experience this fine city.
@DavidZipper
The Citroen Ami is a good example of car meets golf cart and is twice as energy efficient as a Tesla Model 3 and its embodied battery CO2e is only 7% of a Tesla Model 3. 1 Tesla = 14 Citroen Amis.
After school clubs, weekend sports, parties, shopping trips, visiting her friends. Rain or shine (today rain). There she goes, on the back without complaint. She doesn't even know that 27% of her trips in 2021 were on an E-Cargo bike. She hates being in the car. What a legend 🥰
SE postcodes absolutely crushing active mobility today. Most E-Cargo bikes I have seen in one day and under 10s cycling on the road. Closest I have felt to Netherlands in UK 🙌🏾
1/ Since 2020, I've transitioned 95% of local car trips (<10miles) to either a bike or E-Cargo bike.
🌍 95% reduction in CO2e and air pollution
⭐️ 341 local car trips (1,100 miles) prevented annually
💵 99% reduction in private transport energy costs
📢 Fantastic news! I got stuck in my first proper cycle-jams everyday this week on Blackfriars Bridge. Had to wait for 2 traffic light phases to get through 😂 Mega congestion!
Where we're going, we're gonna need a bigger lane. Go London! 🙌🏾
Convenience is...avoiding the traffic & parking a sustainable electric vehicle 2 metres from the grocery store, so you can rustle together a cheeky fattoush 🇱🇧
One of my favourite London bus routes (No. 40) has now switched to the new fully electric buses and they are chuffing awesome.
First few trips on them today! 🚌⚡️🔋 Woohoo
@TfL
🙌🏾
1/ Hit 2,066 miles on the
@ternbicycles
GSD E-Cargo. This is important because this utilisation has been achieved through a 0.4kWh Li-Ion battery. For an E-Car to get the same utilisation/kWh it will need to do around 400,000 miles! (and I ain't stopping here!!)
@MaryCreagh_
Plans are being drawn up to fly this flood water to Rwanda on thousands of planes. As soon as the other rain clouds see that, they will go and rain elsewhere.
The Cargo Bike Revolution Will Be Televised! College Road, Dulwich at school pickup time today. This is JANUARY! It's happening, Spring is going to be EPIC.
@carltonreid
@GBNEWS
I live in East Dulwich, a 15 minute city. My GP is 5 mins walk. Hospital is 15mins bus ride, supermarket is 5min walk, football stadium 15min walk, high street 10mins walk. It's the best thing ever and I can escape whenever I like!
Today I hauled 200 litres of compost from

to a job on the

GSD. Thanks to the staff for helping me load up inside the garden centre - one of the many growing perks of ultra sustainable mobility 👏🏾🌍 🌲
7/ The societal benefits of E-Cargo bikes are enormous:
⚡️ They are 25X times more energy efficient than electric cars.
🌍 Their embodied emissions are a fraction of motor vehicles.
🔋 Their battery is 140 times smaller than an E-Car, requiring far less rare earth elements.
In 2020 I was lucky to see one cargo bike after school in SE22.
2021 I started maybe seeing 2 to 3. 2022 and I was seeing at least 5 to 10
2023...this afternoon I saw about 30. Anecdotal data but the segment is on fire 🔥 📈
@DavidZipper
"All Parisians say they are nervous on the pavements, nervous when they cross the roads. You need to look everywhere." This has applied all my life, decades before E-Scooters even existed.
Wow there are a lot of cars in Crystal Palace! The high street (Westow Hill) is 30mph 🤯 Reduce cars here and you've got one of the most charming areas in London, views are spectacular 🌇
Since 2019, 99% of my business travel & commuting has been by either active mobility or public transport in order to reduce carbon emissions. 4 years business flight free.
So it turns out that today my wife had an asthma attack brought about by one of our neighbours idling their Range Rover Velar P300 for 30mins outside our flat so that their kids were air conditioned whilst they packed the car. 🤦🏾♂️ What should I do
@CleanAirLondon
?
Just nipped into Fully Charged to check out some of the latest E-Bikes. If anyone is looking for something which can take a passenger this Benno RemiDemi looks pretty glorious and has Bosch Drivetrain.
Anyone else experience these Crystal Palace Road stand-offs? Vehicles getting trapped in the road. Happening several times per day now and making the road unusable for all road users. Had to take evasive action to avoid the danger! ⚡️ ⏏ 🪂
@GeorgeMonbiot
In addition we have created urban heat islands which make things even worse...like my neighbours 50°C roof radiator which they can't turn off.
To all Local Authority Planning Depts, Architects, Builders, Roofers...please consider Green Roofs as the rule not the exception for flat installations. My neighbours extension roof running at 50°C (20° above air temp). Contributes to a massive urban heat island effect.
