Trying to imagine what teenage me would have said if you’d told him that in 20 years the bloke out of Portishead and the bloke who produced Surfer Rosa would be taking to the internet to savage the bloke from The Office for saying that women don’t have penises.
I am beyond sick to death of seeing men ask this question of women (and never of other men). Day after day, women lose their time, career progression, privacy, safety and sometimes even their lives as a result of being 'kind'. Women do not have to be 'kind' all the bloody time.
I haven’t paid much attention to the Hay Festival for years, but it must really have been going downhill to have booked Charlotte Church, Nish Kumar and Grace Blakeley in the first place. Yeesh.
Dear god, if you can’t understand that Bowie, Prince, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain, the New York Dolls, the Manics etc. were all explicitly making the point that you can put on make up and a dress and still be a man, I really don’t know what to say to you.
It’s frightening how many of our institutions are just rotting from the inside out. This is a union doing the exact opposite of what a union is supposed to do, in order to demand that a university does the exact opposite of what a university is supposed to do.

They seem to be genuinely baffled at a country where women actually have rights that are not just notional but actually enshrined in law. It’s all new to them.
When is the penny going to drop for people that Stonewall is no longer the force for profound good that it once was, and has morphed into something dangerous, authoritarian and reactionary in a search for continued relevance?
#allisonbailey
Ben Cooper QC emails show explicit threat that if Garden Court Chambers don’t expel claimant (
@BluskyeAllison
) Stonewall will sever ties causing reputational damage
Cannot for the life of me understand how anyone can watch this and see anything progressive or righteous about it. It’s just narcissistic male rage and seething, visceral hatred of women.
If you believe in science, freedom of speech or women’s rights, this judgment is absolutely chilling. And, speaking as a lawyer, the obvious and enormous flaws in the judge’s reasoning are striking.
Judgement received. Bad news (for now) Stonewall law won this round.
Here is my statement in thread form.
I struggle to express the shock and disbelief I feel at reading this judgment
I can’t conceive of how you get to the point of calling Bette Midler a traitor, and a fascist demagogue worthy of comparison to Goebbels, without pausing to wonder whether you’re completely out of your mind.
@PennyRed
There’s no ‘dogwhistle’. People object to it because it’s overwhelmingly directed at women, and because it never strictly means “be kind”, it means “be quiet, be compliant and put everybody else ahead of yourself”.
The quickfire denunciations of Corbyn from those who have until now been telling us we would be morally deficient if we failed to vote for him, are as embarrassing as they are predictable.
How am I only just discovering that Adrian Chiles is the husband of Kath Viner and the ex-husband of Jane Garvey, and what am I supposed to do with this bizarre information?
I was sceptical about the idea that some GCs have gone down a rabbit hole of online radicalisation, but the proliferation of this sort of stuff recently has convinced me I was wrong.
Imagine being in a senior role in women’s rights advocacy for a prominent NGO and claiming to sincerely believe that there are points of common ground between radical feminists and the Taliban. Just utterly absurd.
So mystified by TERFs looking at Taliban abuses against women and girls and thinking that somehow helps support their hatred of trans people. Hating trans people is something TERFs and the Taliban have in common.
I still cannot get my head around the fact that everything that Meghan Murphy says here is now considered controversial, almost to the point of being unacceptable. Every word of it is very obviously true.
WATCH: “you can’t turn a male body into a female body.”
Canadian writer & founder of
@FeministCurrent
, Meghan Murphy says she doesn’t believe trans people can change their sex, adding she doesn’t want women to ‘feel pressured to accept a naked man in their changing room’.
Progressivism is when you think that Jordan Peterson visiting a school is a safeguarding issue, but that men and boys having access to the girls’ toilets and changing rooms in a school isn’t, and the more you think that, the progressivier it is.
@tomhfh
The women you dismiss as ‘trans exclusionary’ dedicate large portions of their lives to thinking about this subject, Tom, because they actually care about other women. The astounding lack of knowledge is all yours. Listen to them for once.

I’m in Hamburg atm In the pavements are small brass plaques bearing the names of Jews who lived in the building opposite the plaque who were murdered by the Nazis. That began with people deciding they could define someone by their biology alone.
@PennyRed
Literally anywhere and everywhere, Laurie. Next question? The problem isn’t trans people. The problem is changing rules, regulations and laws to provide that gender identity trumps sex. But I think you already know that.
2014: same sex marriage becomes legal in the UK.
2020: choosing who you sleep with on the basis of their sex is discrimination.
Bizarre. Totally bizarre.
@jackappleby
Might have been easier for me to get than a lot of men because I work in the family justice system. I see the abuse of women by men and the abuse of children by adults all the time. I know what it looks like and how it works. The TRAs follow the textbook.
@MartinConcagh
A lot of that “generation of older feminists” have been engaged in activism for their entire lives and were all over Me Too, you just weren’t paying any attention to them until an issue arose that you disagreed with them about.
If the IRA had been constantly firing missiles at all major English cities and had descended on, say, Liverpool by boat and glider to indiscriminately rape, torture and murder 1,400 civilians, I would probably have supported air strikes on west Belfast actually, as it happens.
This is an important point. If the British had responded to IRA attacks on civilians by launching relentless air strikes on Irish civilian neighborhoods, it would have appeared obviously psychopathic and deranged. Yet in Gaza this is considered a reasonable response to terror.

First memory of it is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie being piled-on for refusing to say TWAW. Shocked me because she was so obviously right. Then read a couple of pieces by Sarah Ditum and clocked exactly what was going on.

If 'misandry' ever leads to systematic discrimination and oppression and endemic violence and abuse (which it won't), then come back and ask that question again.
Thinking you’re being anti-racist when you’re actually just projecting your own racism onto a beloved series of children’s books is such an epic, hilarious self-own.
Your occasional reminder that most core Extinction Rebellion activists are not environmentalists in any meaningful sense, they are first and foremost incoherent anti-capitalists... which is why they do stupid things like this.
I’m a very long way from being a fan of Suella Braverman, but the determination in some quarters to believe that she’s not intelligent enough or not diligent enough to understand the law, is pretty revolting, and very obviously nonsense.
Nobody is entitled to have their ‘sexual needs’ met. To say that somebody should have their sexual needs met is to say that they should be entitled to treat somebody else as a means to an end, rather than a human being in their own right. That is abhorrent.
A parole board sent a convicted wife-murderer to a sex worker *because* they knew he was a danger to women but wanted to make sure he got his "sexual needs" met. The guy murdered the 22-year-old sex worker.
Are Labour having a competition to see who can get away with the most brazen bit of misogyny under the guise of “trans rights”? If so, Lammy has just stormed into the lead. Who’s up next?
"Shadow Justice Secretary David Lammy has told a Labour Party conference fringe event this morning that anti-trans “dinosaurs exist in our own party” who want to “hoard rights”.

It’s important to engage with this seriously, because it’s a genuine assault on free expression. But it’s equally important to point at it and laugh, because it’s completely insane.
Postmodernism in a nutshell. They don’t believe that how we describe something follows from what we observe about it, they believe that how we observe something follows from how we describe it. Upside down and back to front.
The Home Sec suggesting MPs read this book is a disgrace, it shows a lack of respect for equality laws in this country & is yet more evidence of this Govt desire to attack the trans community in a divisive culture war.
It’s like an echo from the 16th century, in which
@MForstater
is Copernicus, pointing out that the earth orbits the sun whilst an establishment invested in an irrational ideology desperately tries to convince itself otherwise.
It never ceases to shock me that we’ve arrived at a place where prominent feminists are fervently arguing that men’s feelings are more important than women’s rights. It’s scary.
Oh look, the nice, sensible liberal men have got together again and decided that any mention of the material reality and importance of biological sex as regards women’s rights is “reductive”, “horrible”, “grim”, a “stain” on British politics and a “cynical election gambit”.
@MunroeBergdorf
This tweet is quite something: the projection; the misogyny; the complete absence of any grasp of reality. I'm repulsed, and yet I cannot look away.
I’m not sure how this “Waterstones Dad” guy is supposed to be an archetype when there are literally only about half a dozen of him in existence. This just… doesn’t actually describe any real people.
This is a classic of the “start off by sounding conciliatory and apologetic, then spend the rest of the piece explaining why you were right all along and your opponents are awful” genre.
@pdkmitchell
Er, I love all those things, in part for their gender non-conformity. Nicky Wire was my idol as a teenager. My problem with your ideology is the insistence that gender non-conformity trumps/negates sex and that gender non-conforming men are actually women and vice versa.
The problem is that your lot are now saying that a man who wants to put on make up and a dress is actually a woman. It isn’t the make up and dresses themselves that are the issue. Far from it.
Lord knows you shouldn’t put too much faith in writers as heroes. But it’s difficult to see Margaret Atwood, author of The Edible Woman, of all people, cheerfully denying the reality of biological sex in humans by tweeting about slugs, without feeling acute despair.
If you are sacked for stating the fact (because it is, after all, a fact) that human beings are sexually dimorphic and cannot change sex, the law will not come to your aid, because the law regards your statement of fact as a human rights violation. Insane. Completely insane.
One of the most depressing revelations of my adult life is that the liberal centre left’s attachment to free speech, which I naively took to be principled and absolute, was actually essentially opportunistic and contingent.
@NellFrizzell
Broadly agree, but in respect of the Israel-Palestine conflict specifically, it’s roots are not colonial. It goes back much further than that, and is far more complicated. We need to know about much more than just the role of the British in order to properly understand it.
@robinince
Next to nobody is staying that trans people specifically are a danger. They’re saying that male people, regardless of how they identify, are a threat to female people, and that self ID in law would make life much easier for predatory/abusive/violent men. This is basic stuff.
Yeah, but the penicillin didn’t turn your pneumonia into, say, a grapefruit, or a tawny owl, or Francois Mitterrand. There are insurmountable obstacles, and good reasons for not pretending you can overcome them.
@LibDemLaura
@EdwardJDavey
@MumsnetTowers
Mumsnet is 'used to groom people who just want advice on baby stuff'? Listen to yourself. These are not impressionable children, nor are they 'transphobes'. They are grown women, worried about the rights their predecessors have fought and suffered for.
This is fascinating, because it shows that Sarah actually pretty much agrees with JK Rowling. She completely misunderstands both what she purports to be attacking and what she purports to be defending. This well-meaning ignorance is dangerous.
They aren't 'split'. They all want to throw women under the bus, they just disagree slightly on how big the bus should be and what speed it should be travelling at.
What terrifies me is that this is not borne of ignorance or stupidity. Alice Roberts is, obviously, an incredibly intelligent and well-informed person. She knows that what she is promoting here is nonsense on stilts: misogyny, and a perversion and mockery of science 1/2
@sally_hines
Yes. It’s almost as if somebody who fights for women’s rights on one front will probably also fight for them on others too? Who knew? You might be on to something there, Sally.
I know I shouldn’t be at this point, but I am still genuinely shocked at two Labour MPs spreading deliberate disinformation about the EHRC in an effort to discredit and undermine it. It’s staggeringly dishonest and irresponsible.
Presumably this advice on rights for lgbt+ people applies to the current protections in the Equality Act & not the ones you seem to support taking away - especially from trans people
Whatever your position on the substantive issues, it seems to me that lawyers, of all people, shying away from open, honest and pluralistic debate is an extraordinarily bad idea, and one that is bound to ultimately lead to poorer legislation.
This morning, a group of over 100 barristers, pupils and students sent a letter to Middle Temple to express our profound disappointment at the organisation of the inaugural Middle Temple LGBTQ+ Forum. This is the letter in full. Please read it.
I’m repeating myself, but: even if it was true that you could eat this cheaply with just a bit of savvy, why, in a developed western democracy, in the year or our lord 2022, should anybody bloody well have to?
@jessesingal
Comparing women being asked to engage in prostitution with doctors being asked to provide healthcare is, morally and intellectually, deeply unserious. You’re just trotting out a variant of “sex work is work”. It simply isn’t.
Another “sensible”, “moderate” male commentator who simply hasn’t done his homework on this issue and is determined to just view it through a lens of “Tories bad, opponents of Tories good”.
@GoldmundUnleash
Healthy males respect women's autonomy and individuality and regard them as, you know, actual people who can do as they damn well please, rather than accessories to be possessed by men. But clearly you wouldn't know anything about that.
@helenstaniland
Definitely an element of “you see, ladies, this is what happens when you don’t all toe the line” in the frankly horrible comments of Owen Jones, Brian Paddick and others.
I tend to the view that this is symptomatic of a lot of broadly liberal/left people with strong political views wrongly thinking that those views are really just neutral common sense and rationality, and therefore not actually political at all.
Feel like there's "feeling politicised by others" and there's "writing that you're a High Court judge and here are your strong views about sex and gender all over Facebook" and this is, let's be honest, the latter
"We weren't paid to come up with this dangerous, regressive, illiberal, misogynistic policy, we were daft enough to come up with it all by ourselves" is not quite the great defence that Sal Brinton seems to think it is.

It’s obviously being used innocently in this case (and in the vast majority of cases). There’s no way that Emma Bridgewater are making pro-paedophilia mugs and that John Lewis are selling them.
@janeclarejones
It’s just such a laughable and transparently bad faith argument. You could say the same about any area of medicine, because judges aren’t medical experts. You’d end up arguing against any judicial oversight of the medical profession at all, which would be... quite a take.

Do you really not see the absurdity of you, a man, dictating that feminists should be pro-prostitution and pro-porn, when genuine feminists have been documenting and campaigning on the profound harm that those things do to women since long before you were even born? Pipe down.

This morning’s mood: trying to get my head around how fundamentally out of your mind you have to be to try to organise a pile on against Joan Bakewell, and get her expelled from Labour over an innocuous tweet, and think that makes you anything other than a complete arsehole.
There is not a chance in hell that she actually believes this stuff, because she’s not an idiot. But she feels compelled to pretend she believes it nonetheless. When somebody like Alice Roberts is this committed to something so self-evidently absurd, we’re in a very dark place.
