A 1-hr deep dive into Interplay, creator/publisher of Fallout, Descent, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate.
...And the business decisions that led to its downfall, cancelling FOUR Fallout games then pawning the IP to the highest bidder.
Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, dogmeat, ghouls, radscorpions, iconic 10mm pistol, power armor, Vault Boy, Vault-Tec, Nuka Cola, overseer, vault suits, raiders, Shady Sands...
...all written by 1998.
Bethesda created very little of what the Fallout show referenced.
Yet...
Hi-Fi Rush is a great game, but the "this is how you do an indie game" commentary around it is wild.
"Just make a voice-acted, high-fidelity game with seamless cutscenes, licensed music from artists like Nine Inch Nails, with no marketing.
"Oh, and be published by Bethesda."
"We're putting together a team who make takedown videos of more popular YouTubers they envy/have beef with...
"We're preparing for the inevitability of a Mr. Beast-level threat!"
I think my Skyrim playthrough is ready to start. Over 800 mods and 900 plugins. Here are some screenshots. It should be fun to stream on Twitch and YouTube in 2023.

This is disgusting.
@TeamYouTube
doesn't faking a domestic partner's death, and staging a fake mourning, and imitating the purchase of human slaves violate the TOS? Misleading content and potentially dangerous suggestions for views?
@ALoneCourier1
My bad. They look nothing alike. Might as well not even be called Power Armor. I'm going to retract all my comments now because they added a different number and letter combo at the end. 😄
All this revisionism about the original Fallout games has nearly gotten me motivated to make a history lesson video out of spite.
Fallout 1 and 2 were VERY successful games in terms of budget, ROI and the size of the PC game market at the time.
If you thought Uncharted 4 was forced, then Hollywood has the next forced thing for you!
Two actors who look nothing like their video game counterparts looking around at dusty things. Uncharted: The Charted Uncharted, CHARTED.
WSJ reporting that Microsoft plans to include the latest Call of Duty release on Game Pass this fall
"Microsoft plans a major shakeup of its videogame sales strategy by releasing the coming installment of Call of Duty to its subscription service instead of the longtime,
@luftogen
This might be the most nonsensical thing I've read all week.
"It's exactly the same, except the map, story, factions, characters, endings, quests and unique items and gear are different!"
Love it or hate it, the mental gymnastics people are doing to try to canonize the Fallout show are nothing short of embarrassing.
It's like if a new Star Wars movie came out saying the Rebels built the Death Star, the Jedi were ape-brained thieves, and Luke was raised on Hoth.
Possibly the slimiest thing Bethesda has done in courts was when they accused Interplay (what was left of it) of copyright infringement in their legally-licensed Fallout MMO.
They argued that Interplay was only allowed THE NAME "Fallout," not any of the Fallout IP elements.
A generation of people now understand lockpicking LESS thanks to post-Oblivion Bethesda games.
The angle of your tension bar and pick isn't a thing for standard locks.
Oblivion, on the other hand, actually (sort of) simulated the idea of setting individual pins.

It seems to be a way to knock James down a peg while also looking artistic and insightful, so as to obfuscate the true nature of it. He straight up insults his friends like Mike, though.
@kiaran_ritchie
I'd adore a video game that captures the sense of style and texture of 70s/80s sci-fi and fantasy art.
Unfortunately, with the homogenization of graphics engines (and the expense of developing your own), it's difficult to do so without some mad scientist shaders/post processing.
This man and his collaborators have done the impossible, and have singlehandedly done more for The Elder Scrolls II community than anyone has for the last 20 years with Daggerfall Unity.
Extremely impressive work from Gavin and team, and I'm eager to see what they do next!

1.0.0 Release is now available! After several years in development, and the efforts of many people, Daggerfall Unity is finally considered complete. The project will now move into post-release community support and maintenance.
Spoiler Alert: Mauler wasn't the biggest fan of the Fallout show. Watch his (full spoilers) breakdown of Amazon Fallout in lengthy detail!
Along with several others, Mauler asked me for input on the video game lore section, and I helped with editing that segment as well.

doesn't matter, and the "jury" have platformed plagiarists, non-gamers, and reviews made in spite (for bias or political reasons), or ignorance (not even playing the game).

I immediately went to subscribe to the waiting list, but Jesus Tapdancing Christ, I bought my last Google Pixel phone for HALF of that...
"TERRIBLE" and "UNFUNNY"! 😱 The upcoming Borderlands movie is getting crucified in early reactions!
This particular early reaction to the movie comes to us via Daniel Richtman!
What do you make of this news? Are you still going to watch the movie when it's released in cinemas?
We used to curse the 7th gaming generation for its stagnation.
Two gens later, we're still trying (and failing) to capture that innovation.
Dead Space, Red Dead, Arkham, GTA 4, Portal, Far Cry, Uncharted, TLOU, Assassin's Creed, Dead Rising, Gears, Bioshock, the list goes on...
Happy birthday to the late, great John Bain aka TotalBiscuit. He would've been 40 today.
An accomplished speaker and YouTuber, he was the single biggest inspiration for becoming one myself.
Here's a pic of me and the crew after the live Co-Optional podcast at Dragon Con 2015.
So an online gaming rag made an article about the "average" Baldur's Gate III character looking "generic".
The average of 0 and 100 is still 50.
Even if EVERYONE picked extremes, the average would still be right in the middle. That's how averages work.
