Hey there! I'm the creator of #DaggerfallUnity . If you play using the "GOG Cut" release, consider this version is now almost 2 years out of date and comes preloaded with dozens of mods that completely change how the game looks and plays. I cannot recommend it in any way.

#DaggerfallUnity 1.0 builds are in testing now. This marks the final stage of a very long personal project which flew higher than I could have ever imagined. It feels a very bittersweet thing to put it all behind me soon after so many years working on this labour of love.

This is interesting. Daggerfall Unity is 99% code, generating the whole world at runtime (meshes, lights, audio, the works). I barely touched the editor in 8 years of development. Wonder how it will go when someone tries porting it to Godot. DFU is an outlier though.

It's a small start, but DaggerfallConnect works just fine in #GodotEngine . This is the API inside DFU that reads and converts Daggerfall's DOS binary formats into engine-agnostic data. It has practically zero dependencies and is the backbone of the whole thing. Very nice!

Did you know that in #Daggerfall , you can levitate through town, while riding your horse, while transformed into a wereboar, while snarling and squealing and slashing at NPCs? Surely this must pure be nightmare fuel for that guy down there...

Something not many people know - #DaggerfallUnity isn't "just" an engine replacement or a source port. It's a ground-up recreation of classic #Daggerfall . From the early days of making tools that culminated to what you see today, this has taken 20 years of work, on and off.

Runtime texture loading in Daggerfall Tools for Godot now working. Next I'll start chipping away at runtime mesh creation, then basic scenes. Hopefully all this will become a good starting point for anyone crazy enough to port Daggerfall Unity > Godot in future.

Hi @Bethesda , does this mean Daggerfall is coming to Steam? Any chance for Steam release be fully patched to .213 (your final patch for the game)? This patch is missing from Bethesda net version, making it a more buggy experience than it needs to be.

Taking a stroll in #DaggerfallUnity with full retro settings for that oldschool crunchy pixel look. Game is running at 1600x1200 with 320x200 retro rendering and UI free scaling enabled. This setup ensures all the aspects are correct and game sprites & text aren't stretched wide.

The whole Unity debacle has forced me out of my comfort zone and it's just what I needed. I enjoyed playing with Godot for a few weeks, and now I'm diving into Unreal and its really clicking with me. I'm spending every day learning new things and it feels great.

Advanced Climbing by Meteoric Dragon will have a "hanging mode" in 0.7, allowing strong climbers to grab and hold ceilings then kind of brachiate around high places. This is getting wild.

Baler on forums just pointed out that #DaggerfallUnity has surpassed 500k total mod downloads on Nexus, and we're around the top 100 for total downloads. That's a stunning achievement for a niche fan remake. Kudos to our awesome modding community for all their efforts!

In July 2021, I'm setting a HARD feature lock for #DaggerfallUnity . Only bug fixes will be accepted to core. This is to prepare for 1.0 later this year, and limit code changes so that active modders can have their mods stable before launch.

#DaggerfallUnity 0.16.3 Release Candidate is now available! This is hopefully the final RC before 1.0. This release fixes the settings regression in 0.16.2 that caused problems for some. Everyone get testing and let me know if any more major bugs!

For anyone concerned, the Unity pricing change is aimed at developers using their engine. There's a revenue threshold above 200k. It doesn't apply to a free open source game project like DFU that made $0 lifetime from any source.

#DaggerfallUnity 0.16.1 Release Candidate now available! Many localization improvements, such as IME input for CJK keyboards and snazzy dynamic glyph loading. Translators no longer need to setup a whole alphabet file ahead of time, and startup is faster.

VMBlast on forums has modelled fully 3D versions of #Daggerfall 's billboard trees for #DaggerfallUnity 's mod system. I understand performance isn't there yet, but TheLacus (mod system lead) is looking into what he can do to help.

You can run #DaggerfallUnity as retro as you like or mod it to the hilt with mods like DREAM, Basic Roads, even Airships! There are mods with hundreds of new quests, new guilds, new gameplay, and much more!

Something that might not be obvious, #DaggerfallUnity is very close to 1.0 release now. Unless you're waiting on more Localization support or bug fixes, there aren't any big changes scheduled between now and release. The game you see now is essentially done pending refinements.

I've moved jump formula & gravity refinement to Alpha cycle and putting wraps on 0.9 in roadmap now. This means first #DaggerfallUnity Alpha release will be in just a few days. The final stages begin now.

Working on Gamma > Linear color space change and tuning up materials to remove specular shine you'll notice sometimes, especially on flats. The tree shader is a good place to start.

I love how in Daggerfall, the player is just one cog in a big political machine with hundreds of warring or allied factions. We have to fight to rise out of obscurity, and I never feel like the game world exists for me alone. It just grinds on uncaring if I even play it or not.

Are there any kind #Godot people out there able to clarify something for me? Does every script need to be attached to a node? What about libraries/APIs that do heavy lifting for the game but have no place being in the scene or extending a node?

Some #DaggerfallUnity screens taken while playing with new built-in postprocessing controls in 0.13.2. These have FXAA, Ambient Occlusion, and Bloom enabled in unmodded game. You can toggle and tune each setting while game is running to dial in personal preferences.

I extended "retro rendering mode" to support crisp 320x200 and 640x400. After that, you can use standard display resolutions all the way up to UHD. All modes can be played with or without mods, linear filtering, or SDF fonts. Hopefully that covers every preference combo now. :)

Stage 1 effect of vampirism in #DaggerfallUnity is almost completed. The work of this effect is just to count down infection and play warning dream video after a day has passed. This can be cured like any normal disease up to 3 days before the final fang-filled payload.

Ambient Occlusion intensity is now part of DFU core. This darkens corners and creases to give everything some extra depth. Set from startup settings or adjust in-game with "aointensity" console command. Screens below compare AO of 0.0 (off) vs 2.0 (rather intense).

#DaggerfallUnity 0.14.0 is now available! This is a general bug fix release, but due to the large number of changes is marked as a preview so modders have time to test before next general release. Full details in link below.

After spending most of this year winding down my old job and solving what I'm doing next, I'm finally in a spot where I can work full-time on a new game after DFU 1.0. I'm putting the pieces into place and will start journaling development progress in the coming weeks.

High climbing skill characters in #DaggerfallUnity will love @MeteoricDragon 's Advanced Climbing System. Now you can leap and grab walls in mid-air, hold in place, wall jump, climb in any direction, and even wrap around corners!

The large HUD is coming soon for #DaggerfallUnity . Because widescreens are now a thing and everyone has a different preference, you'll be able to stretch to fill or render at correct aspect with custom scale all the way down to small.

I just adore Mages Guilds in #DaggerfallUnity with our interior lighting upgrades. Instead of a flat ambient light, there are shadowy pockets everywhere and a slight sulphurous hue to every light source. It adds a touch of mystery to these houses of arcane learning.

To cure your lycanthropy in #Daggerfall , you have to give your diseased blood to a sickly child to pass the curse on to them, then murder them once they change. This is dark stuff!
