How would you feel if you went to check messages from your family and saw a message that the school you and your sisters/brothers went to was bombed by a country trying to kill/or subjugate your nation?
Here is my school bombed by Russians last night. Words do not describe it.

What is the longest it took you to publish a paper?
In sum, we show that the Great Depression led to a decline in technological entrepreneurship and accelerated the shift of innovation into larger firms.

Our finding of increased labor income after the deregulation of money in politics was surprising: popular belief is that money in politics entrenches existing political and corporate interests.
Instead, we find increased political competition and broadly beneficial policies!

We will share our new hand-collected data on US DOJ antitrust lawsuits with research community after publication. Among other variables, these data allows to observe markets (industry-states) affected by anticompetitive behavior over past 50 years.
In new paper, we found that Russian oil export prices at Kozmino port stood at $73/barrel in 2023Q1โwith 96% of volumes sold above the price cap $60/barrel!
Much of this involved Western-owned or insured vessels, violating sanctions.

My mom in Ukraine did not have electricity for two days.
Did this break her and make her want to "negotiate peace" with Russia?
Absolutely not! She texted me in UKRAINIAN that they will endure everything for Ukraine to win (she usually speaks Russian).

We have an amazing set of papers and an industry panel to talk about the challenges firms face in managing their labor.
Plus, dinner on a boat!
Do tech firms lay off workers because of AI?
I do not think so: When money is cheap, tech firms pile on hiring; when money is expensive, they tighten the belt. So far, there is no systematic empirical evidence that firms use AI to replace labor.

Economists for Ukraine endorse sanctions proposal by McFaul-Yermak Group on enablers of Putinโs war in Ukraine. Key points:
1 Categories of individuals to be sanctioned
2 Tools: asset freeze and travel ban
3 Mechanisms to earn not being sanctioned
In proposing the individual sanctions roadmap, the McFaul-Yermak Group prioritized those individuals that the sanctions will hit quickly and most effectively.
So sad to see this beautiful new airport destroyed by Russians. It was a symbol of prosperity and growth of Ukrainian eastern regions.

Absolutely agree with Ben: the Russian oil price cap at $60 (max price for Russian oil) is entirely insufficient because...
Russian oil is already trading at that level!

Hey, peacemongers, who insist that Ukraine must negotiate with Russia for peace, I have a question.
If your home, your city, your country would be blown by Russia, would you chose to negotiate for "peace" or fight against the invading terrorists?
Very IMPORTANT.
Talked to close friend in RU, worried about her husband being sent to war. (Who should know what's going on). In response to my question "what's your plan", she said "well not everyone dies in the war". I cried so much, realizing how far gone people in RU are.
Been talking to families of conscriptable men all day. Unfortunately this is Feb22 all over again. Massive denial and cognitive dissonance and little media coverage of anything beyond the abstract phrase "partial mobilization". That first word seems to key to magical thinking.
Do you think it should be Russia who should pay for the devastating damage it has done to Ukrainians and their economy?
If yes, please read and share our proposal by

As someone who did interest rate risk management at big regional bank, this is good explanation for the main reason
@SVB_Financial
failed: unhedged interest rate risk.
Good news: most banks do not have this issue.
Bad news: many PE firms do (bet rates will stay low)...
SVB does not deserve a bailout.
A deep look at their financial statement reveals how horrific they were at risk management.
And in my opinion incompetence explains only part of it.
Moral hazard must have been at play.

Economists for Ukraine have written an open letter to Jeffrey Sachs, whose statements about Russia's war in Ukraine have been appallingly inaccurate and unhelpful. Over 100 economists, including many Ukrainians, have signed the letter.
The German company Rheinmetall prepared 16 Marder infantry fighting vehicles for Ukraine. The Scholz government refuses to issue an export license.
History will judge Germany harshly for failing to do enough to stop the genocide of Ukrainians by the Russian fascist invaders.
Very good thread about ordinary Russians supporting Russian war in Ukraine.
I am from East Ukraine, and had many friends in Russia. None of them condemned the war or showed empathy. When I asked if they are afraid to die in the war, "not everyone dies in a war" was the reply.
A lesser known page of the Russo-Ukrainian war is the story of how a bunch of Ukrainian digital pros launched a *massive* info campaign in Feb/March 2022 to penetrate Russian propaganda and reach ordinary Russians.
Itโs time you should know this story (and learn from it).

Did Ukraine kill 14K ethnic Russians prior to 2022? This is one of the justification by the Russians for the invasion: to protect ethnic Russians. Recently I have seen a reappearance of this argument. So, we must refute it again, with facts. 1/
1. Wiki does state 14K deaths. 1/
Imagine your loved ones are bombed? They can be killed at any time. That's how many of us, Ukrainians, feel every day, our families being attacked by Russians; unprovoked.
Do something to help. Every effort counts.
My hometown has been bombed today by russian missiles. My family hangs on, they are safe right now. The war is not over it only gets closer under skin and takes uglier forms. Today it's in Ukraine tomorrow it will be elsewhere if we don't

There is only one good scenario for Ukraine, Europe, and free world: where Russia loses its brutal assault on Ukraine and on world order.
What would you do to stop Hitler?
We must stand united to stop Putler.
During a conference held at the Richmond Fed last month,
@TaniaBabina
discussed the impact of AI on firms and workers, while
@DanialLashkari
covered increases in living standards among groups with different incomes. Conference summary here: .
The moral bankruptcy of buying Russian energy: those who are buying energy from Russia are directly responsible for the deaths of Ukrainians by funding Putin's war. What would you have done to stop Hitler? What are you doing to stop Putin?
How do we stop Russian war in Ukraine?
By stopping Russia from earning money from selling its oil.
But the Russian oil capped price of $60-70 proposed by US/EU is will do nothing. Need to cut this to $30/bbl to have any impact.
Read more here:
Our analysis suggests that the sweet spot for the discount is about $50/bbl. The price around $35/bbl with a $50/bbl discount and current global prices โ will still be above Russiaโs cost of production, which is in the $10-15/bbl range, preserving the incentive to supply.

: 100% true! I am from Donbas: a relative of a friend of mine "serve" in "separatists army". In reality, they are recruited and paid by Russia, and do what Russians tell them.
The "Russia-backed Donbas separatists" term is misleading because most understand it to imply a backwards sequence, i.e. Donbas separatists existed, challenged Kyiv, and then Russia decided to back them. In reality, Russia intervened, recruited locally, and then challenged Kyiv.
