As Australia’s largest water utility, we’re creating a better life with world-class water services for Greater Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains. 💧
We remove around 500 tonnes of wet wipes from our wastewater system every year.
That means we’ve removed around 5,497,826 tonnes of wet wipes since the last time Wests Tigers played finals footy.
@WillMcDougall
Our sincere apologies Will. We were merely trying to convey the magnitude of the issue. And when we tried to equate it to the last time Parramatta won a premiership, our calculator broke.
Flushing wet wipes is a bit like appointing Eddie Jones to coach the Wallabies…
They often promise a lot, but in the end will leave you with an expensive mess that someone else has to come in and clean up.

Unfortunately some things end up down there that don’t belong there: wet wipes, cotton buds, cooking oils, social media platforms etc.
But we’ve still got to deal with them.

@NSWHealth
to play our part in the fight against
#COVID19
by testing our wastewater network data. There is no evidence COVID-19 is transmitted via wastewater systems. We are testing virus fragments, so there is no safety risk to our teams.
Given the current toilet paper shortages, we’re here to remind you that there are some things you can’t flush. Tissues, paper towel or even “flushable” wipes don’t break down like toilet paper does and can lead to blockages in our system.
Sydney is in drought, which means every drop of water is precious. Wait until you have a full load before you put the washing on and shorten your showers 4 minutes. If we all do something little, together we can make a big difference.

Did you know… each time you buy bottled water, you could be spending more than 1,800 times as much money than if you were to drink straight from the tap?
Keep choosing tap water over bottled – it’ll save you money and avoids plastics ending up in our environment.

DID U KNOW THAT A LITRE OF SYDNEY TAP WATER COSTS LESS THAN A CENT? THAT’S LESS THAN A CHOCCY FRECKLE FROM THE SCHOOL CANTEEN IN 1982! BOTTLED WATER ON THE OTHER HAND COSTS UP TO 2000x MORE THAN TAP YET COMES FROM THE SAME SOURCES, SO U R REALLY JUST BUYING EXPENSIVE TAP WATER...
If everyone in Sydney cut their shower time by just 10 seconds, we'd save more than 8 million litres of water a day.
Small acts can make a big difference.
Did you know that almost half of the world’s bottled water comes from the same sources as tap water – not some exotic mountains in Fiji?

over bottled – it’ll save you money, and avoid unnecessary single use plastic finding its way into our waterways and oceans.
The average price of bottled water in Australia is $2.83. If you bought a bottle every day for a year you’d spend $1,032.95. Sydney Water costs less than a cent a litre.
Take the lead from Jilla - ditch the plastic bottle and pour yourself a Warragamba Slammer 🚰

Have you seen our latest “Turn it Off Bob” ad and thought, “hang on, it’s rained most of the year - why is Sydney Water asking us to save water?
Let us explain why 👇 (thread)
Yep, it’s true.
According to

, bottled water is on average almost 2000x more expensive than tap!
In fact, drinking 2L of tap water every day for a year will cost you around $1.50 – but over $2,800 if you choose bottled!

Avoid flushing any type of wet wipe – even so-called ‘flushable’ ones. They can clog up your plumbing faster than you can say blocked drain.

Say hello to our newest recruit at Sydney Water – Hydro! 👋 🐶
Hydro is a 14-week-old Working line Springer Spaniel and is the newest member of our leak detection dog program. He’ll be the first dog to be trained internally within Sydney Water to detect water leaks.
Raise your bat Joey! 💯👏
A big congratulations to our very talented leak detection dog Joey, who yesterday found his 100th confirmed drinking water leak! 💦
What a very good and clever boi 🐶
Happy Birthday to Thomas Crapper, who invented the ballcock (that little floating valve inside toilets that prevents tank overflow) and helped enhance the flushable toilet during the 1860s.
Let’s all pay homage to Thomas on his bday by not flushing any wet wipes 👍

Below the cliffs of Vaucluse and Diamond Bay, wastewater flows directly into the ocean untreated and this is not acceptable. It’s time for change and we’re continuing to work to ensure this iconic area of Sydney gets the clean, blue backyard it deserves.

It's the imperfect storm blocking Sydney's sewer pipes...
More than 500 tonnes of greasy, matted 'fatbergs' are removed from our wastewater system every year. On average, we remove 13 of these blockages a day - costing nearly $15 million in clean-up a year.
What if bottled water companies stopped putting "sourced from volcanic springs on a South Pacific island" on their packaging and just put "sourced from the depths of the concrete water basin of Warragamba Dam, Western Sydney”?
Did you know: the Sydney Desalination Plant is currently operating?
