Very sad news - Tony Soper, a huge influence on generations of birders and broadcasters, who I had the huge privilege of working with and getting to know, has died aged 95. The last person who was there at the start of the BBC Natural History Unit. A lovely man.
The worst environment secretary ever (and that takes some doing!) has resigned. Good riddance
@theresecoffey
- you were utterly useless, and according to one leading conservationist who met you, the rudest and most uninterested politician they had ever met.
A very happy 80th birthday to my dear friend and colleague, the incomparable genius
@BillOddie
Please RT and send Bill your very best wishes; after a tough year he is back, as he says, "I have risen again!" Have a great day Bill...

My late mother Kay, a single parent who left school at 15 and was never given the chance to go to university, always wanted me to be a doctor. Not sure this is what she had in mind, but I think she would have been proud. I owe it all to her love and guidance. Thanks, mum.
Just to say I’ll be out of the loop for a few weeks, as I’m in Taunton hospital for checks after a small but worrying stroke. No doubt I’ll soon be bored witless and keen to find out who our latest PM is. Or maybe not. Love to you all for keeping me sane in this mad world. 🥰
Is
@Detectorists
the best drama/comedy series ever made by the BBC?! Perfect watching - funny, poignant, moving and very very real. Slow TV at its very best - well done to all involved…
For god sake
@BBCNews
- we face the most important election in our nation’s history, you totally ignore the environment, and for three bulletins in a row you lead with the 106th person in line to the throne having concussion. Do you understand the concept of news values?!
It was one of the greatest privileges and pleasures of my life to work with, and later get to know as a friend, the wildlife TV presenter Tony Soper, a true pioneer who entertained millions. Here is my
@guardianobits
tribute to this fine man.
Sad news. The immensely talented, kind and brilliant bird artist Robert Gillmor died this afternoon, after a long illness. Many of us grew up with his artwork in magazines, and on book covers. A lovely man, who’ll be much missed. RIP Robert. Sympathy to Susan, Emily & Thomas.
@NightSkyLantern
Please do NOT release these lanterns - they cause fires and can harm livestock and wildlife... this is VERY STUPID (not sure I’m being clear enough here...)
One month ago today I was diagnosed as having suffered a stroke. Fortunately it was a fairly minor one, and I appear to have made more or less a full recovery. I wanted to thank all my friends, here and elsewhere, for their kind words during my recovery. Really touching. 1/3
Ten days to go until publication day for my new book, Ten Birds that Changed the World. Chapter 1: The Raven - the bird that shaped ancient and modern mythology, from Odin to the Game of Thrones...
I'M GOING HOME!!!!! - thanks to the amazing staff (doctors, nurses, cooks, and many more) at
@NorthBristolNHS
#Southmead
Hospital. You are such heroes, and I can't thank you enough. And thanks to my lovely twitter friends for your kind concern. Now in Nurse Suzanne's care😀😀😀
Yes, that's how facts work. Release 50 million pheasants a year - more than the entire biomass of all the UK's other breeding birds combined - and there is bound to be major ecological consequences. Sorry you can't understand that.
Here's my wonderful mum in Venice 1959, the coach holiday that she met my dad (the driver, from Milan). As my dad told me when we finally met 43 years later, "On the last night we made love, with your grandmother asleep in the same room". I'm grateful my nan was a heavy sleeper.
Exactly one year ago today, I awoke feeling like I was coming down with a dose of 'man flu'. It turned out to be a stroke - a bleed on the brain. Fortunately it was a very minor one - and now, a year on, I feel as if I dodged a bullet... 1/3
Just heard 3 words I never thought Suzanne would say: "Congratulations, Dr Moss". Passed PhD with minor modifications. Huge thanks to my supervisors Tracy Brain and Kate Rigby, colleagues and students at

and examiners

I went on the first march for nature a few years ago. It was a lovely social event, with a few thousand people, most of whom I knew, but to be honest, fairly ineffective. Today was a proper mass movement: 100,000 passionate people fighting to restore nature. Real progress!
This is a red herring - I am not employed by the BBC and did not receive a fee from
@BBCr4today
for my interview. Telling the truth about raptor persecution does not spread a 'radical agenda'. Birds of prey are being KILLED ILLEGALLY: what is so radical about condemning that?!
Hello
@DefundBBC
- can you please ask the question why it is celebrities
@StephenMoss_TV
and
@ChrisGPackham
are continually able to abuse their platforms on the BBC to spread their radical agenda in the countryside and get significant attendance fees for events?
60 years ago today my mother Kay, a single parent when that was almost unknown, gave birth to me. Six weeks later she had to go back to work, so my Nan, the same age as I am now, brought me up. I owe everything to them, and so wish they were here so I could tell them so. 1/2
Just had great news: I have tested NEGATIVE for COVID-19, despite suffering from many of the symptoms since the weekend. Very relieved! Thanks to all friends and colleagues (and the saintly Suzanne and my children) for their love and support, as ever. Stay safe and well all...
If you enjoyed these 'bird biographies' (and hopefully the Swan, coming this autumn), would you like to suggest the next bird in the series? I'll then turn those into a shortlist for you to vote! Many thanks in advance... Please RT
Huge thanks for kind words and thoughts from all you lovely people; I’ve been humbled and cheered by all these. Currently on nil by mouth and awaiting an angiogram today… hopefully the forecast will then be clearer. Meanwhile take care of yourselves - and I’ll be back soon! 😁
But today, as I hit the milestone of 60, I am so grateful for my health, happiness, fulfilment, dear friends and especially my wonderful family Suzanne, Daniel, David, James, Charlie, George and Daisy - and of course the joys of the natural world. Stay safe everyone. 2/2
Insect-eating bird population ‘drops by 40% in decade’. Terrifyingly obvious here in Somerset where sightings of house martins in particular are few and far between…

Sammy (Samuel) Moss Edwards, born Friday 7th October 2022. To David and Kate, a son. To Stephen and Suzanne, a grandson. To Daniel, James, Charlie, George and Daisy, a nephew. Welcome to the world, little fella!
Just watched a wonderful TV programme about the urgent need to save Britain’s precious habits and their wildlife, with a charismatic and engaging presenter. No, not that one. Paul Whitehouse, Our Troubled Rivers.
@BBCTwo
First singing Blackcap of the year in the garden just now, right outside my office! Earliest ever here in 17 springs, though by just one day. Nice way to celebrate Suzanne's birthday... May spring be with you all soon!
Thanks to everyone for your support today. I hugely appreciate your kind messages and retweets. I’m going to step back now for a few days while I cycle across Britain (well, England) the sensible west to east way, rather than as my son and his partner are doing, south to north...
Ten Birds that Changed the World now out from
@FaberBooks
My first truly global book, showing how birds have influenced human history, culture and society, from prehistoric times to the present day, and with a timely message for the future...
6/9 To repeat for the hard of understanding: Birds of Prey are doing very well in the UK, APART FROM on and near grouse moors where they are being systematically and ILLEGALLY killed. What do you not understand about that,
@C4_pmc
?
At long last, the first garden Swallow of the year greeted me as I returned from my early morning bike ride... a full two-and-a-half weeks later than the long-term average of April 8th. Welcome back, my old friend...
I'm celebrating on the first day of my visit to Ecuador, en route to
#ecuadorbirdfair
. Here are a couple of snaps: me at the 'middle of the world', with one leg in each hemisphere, the other a Blue-winged Mountain-tanager, just one of the amazing birds here! 3/3
9/9 Really, this is very simple: a cabal of landowners, shooting and game interests creating fake news, making personal attacks on conservationists, and supporting blatant lawbreaking. It’s really not that hard to understand, is it,
@c4_pmc
?
Just wanted to wish
@CarlBovisNature
and his family a very happy Christmas - and thanks Carl for cheering us up with your wonderful and often very funny photos, of common birds like Great White Egret and rarities like House Sparrow. Keep up the great work!
@DominicCouzens
Earliest ever singing Chiffchaff in our Somerset garden by an astonishing 35 days... usually start in mid-March. I am elated and worried in equal measure...
Urgent message from John Lister-Kaye at
@Aigas
Please lobby
@nature_scot
if you are concerned. 'Yesterday the ospreys in Aigas Gorge were mobbed by paddleboards and canoes. Some people were disturbing the birds to take photographs. Please act urgently to protect the ospreys.
The PM promised to “scythe through red tape and get things done...the newt-counting delays in our system are a massive drag on the productivity and and the prosperity of our country.”
I am concerned for our wildlife
@SteB777
@NaturalistDara
@joshual951
First post-stroke early-morning bike ride - a leisurely circuit of the Skylarks with Rosie loop. Lots of Fieldfares and Redwings, Starlings and Goldfinches, and gulls on the flooded fields...
FINALLY… the first Swallow of the spring flying rapidly north over the local cider farm as Daisy and I came home with Saturday night Chinese takeaway. A pure Somerset experience.
Just to say a huge thanks to those of you who have bought my 'bird biographies'. The Robin, Wren, Swallow and Swan, plus Twelve Birds of Xmas, have now sold over 100,000 copies in the UK! Robin leads the way with over 50,000; Wren second with 24,000! Owl coming this autumn!
Well, 2023 was quite a year, with some good amongst the (often very) bad. The Moss family have a lot of big life changes coming up, and some exciting challenges in the year ahead. We wish you all a happy and fulfilling 2024 - Stephen, Suzanne, Charlie, George and Daisy.
Usual nonsense you would expect from this organisation. Am consulting m'learned friends about misuse of copyrighted material and possible reputational damage. Will let you know the results later today.
Chiffchaffs singing every day now in my garden and on my early morning bike ride through the Somerset village lanes. This does feel like a fairly new autumn phenomenon, maybe linked to them overwintering? Any thoughts,
@DominicCouzens
?!
Just wanted to flag up that on the afternoon of December 31st (New Year's Eve) some of my nature writing friends and I will be doing a livestream event on Twitter, reading extracts from our work to (hopefully!) cheer people up! More details to follow after Christmas...
Inevitably I too have been confirmed as having COVID, following teenager catching it. Don't feel too bad - just a bit shit; like typical man-flu really. 🤣 Mrs M. doing a brilliant job looking after us. Hope you are all safe and well in the meantime...
Very confiding Black-throated Diver at a murky Apex Park, Burnham-on-Sea this afternoon... My first ever for Somerset, and one of some very good birds that turn up here, including Yellow-legged and Glaucous Gulls, and Tundra Bean and White-fronted Geese in recent winters!
50 years ago yesterday I saw my very first Avocet at
@Natures_Voice
Havergate Island reserve in Suffolk, while on holiday with my mum. Have never forgotten the sheer wonder of this beautiful bird. Now I see then on my Somerset coastal patch - what a success! Well done RSPB...
Ding dong, the MP has resigned. Full of self-pity and faux-innocence. Good riddance to the worst environment minister in UK history (and that's saying something!)
Huge cheers to
@LucyMcRobert1

@Lucy_Lapwing
for such a powerful message about how women birders feel unsafe on
@Channel4News
We must call out ANY bad behaviour affecting women when birding...
Very proud to be graduating today with my

. Photos - complete with fancy gown - later! PS even my children are coming!
What I didn’t say was that the people looking after me at Musgrove Hospital, Taunton, have been absolutely AMAZING! Kind, caring, informative and simply brilliant. And that means you, Natalie! And the rest of the team… (Note to the Tories: don’t you dare mess with the NHS).
Teach Yourself Birdsong no 4 - this week I'm listening to three finches, all of which are singing at full volume at the moment! (Spot the rather severe lockdown haircut from last spring, courtesy of Charlie...) Enjoy!
Finally, at long last - my very first Swallow of the spring, floating low over our Somerset garden... Have spent the last year writing a biography of this incredible bird, including a visit to South Africa to watch more than a million roosting at sunset. And now, they're back!
Ten Birds that Changed the World will be published by
@FaberBooks
on March 2nd 2023. My first truly global book, with an urgent and very timely message: when you mess with nature, it will mess with you back.
Thanks to everyone who has followed me in the past week - taking me to 12K followers. I suspect many of you enjoy birdsong! I’ll be posting the final teach yourself video tomorrow and then package all six into one thread!
It took
@patrick_barkham
less than a year to see all Britain's butterflies - I've just completed the set (of 61 species) with Mountain Ringlet (on Ben Lawers), coincidentally after 61 years. Not the most beautiful British butterfly, but still pretty special for me!
To those men who dismiss women's concerns, I remind you that these are our sisters, daughters, mothers, friends and colleagues, and they - and all the millions of women we do not know - deserve to go about their lives without fear, danger, attack or worse.
#SarahEverard
Amazing birthday present with early start at Burnham seafront - 120 bar-tailed godwits, 30 whimbrel, peregrine, swallow passage and then 4 ARCTIC SKUAS right overhead, heading inland on their journey north!
