Very excited to hold in my hands a hardback copy of my new book, THE LIE OF THE LAND - an expose of what the 'custodians of the countryside' have done to nature in Britain.

So

The owner of the Daily Mail & MoS, Viscount Rothermere, owns 4,700 acres in Dorset & Wiltshire, some of it via offshore firms based in tax havens:
But they’d rather talk about Keir Starmer’s donkey field.
In deepest darkest Devon, I’ve found what I think is a fragment of Atlantic hazelwood: a type of temperate rainforest & a very rare habitat, more usually found in western Scotland or Ireland. Let me tell you a bit about it… 🧵1/n
BREAKING: Wealthy landowner wins court case to extinguish the right to wild camp on Dartmoor - the only place where it’s been legal in England
This is an outrage &

are mobilising - follow them to join the rebellion
Britain is a rainforest nation - but we cut down most of our rainforests over the centuries. Overgrazed and under-recognised, only fragments remain.
Please sign my petition calling on the UK Govt to protect and restore Britain's lost rainforests:
On our Mass Trespass of the Duke of Somerset’s pheasant shoot woods, we’ve discovered a mass grave of scores of discarded pheasants, wire mesh fencing, & fly-tipped rubbish.
We’re here to draw back the veil of secrecy that hides how landowners - not ramblers - trash nature.
BREAKING: Right to wild camp on Dartmoor in jeopardy as huge landowner brings legal case against Dartmoor National Park Authority claiming no such right exists
Dartmoor is the only place in England where you can legally wild camp - we must all defend this

. Your reminder that 1% of the population own half the land in England.
And we only have a Right to Roam over 8% of the country.

This 10,000-acre estate was once the Duke of Buccleuch’s grouse moor - now it’s been bought out by the Langholm community & is being restored as a nature reserve! Natural regeneration, peat rewetting, orchid meadows. Thanks Jenny & Kat (Langholm Initiative) for showing me around!
Encountered a hunt yesterday whilst out walking at Haytor on Dartmoor.
Shortly before they arrived, we'd also seen a fox bolting across the moor.
Presumably the hunt had driven it from its hole ('earth') and blocked the entrance?
Thought fox hunting was illegal? 🤔
@krishgm
And the Labour vote share was lower partly because there was so much tactical voting - instead of wasting votes for candidates who couldn’t win, the progressive vote sorted itself extremely efficiently.
Buckfastleigh Moor on Dartmoor is up for sale: £1.3m for 850 acres.
- Mostly SSSI, in 'unfavourable recovering' condition
- Blanket bog, dwarf shrub heath, some natural regen
- Wild camping rights over the moor
Community buyout, anyone?
Pretty extraordinary that this headteacher *advised schoolkids to walk in the road* rather than walk past a plant which is only dangerous if ingested.
If we think plants are more dangerous than cars, we're truly stuffed.
Trespass is still only a civil offence, not a criminal offence & therefore not something the police should have any interest in - so wind your neck in guys
France & Ireland now threatening to veto EU-Mercosur trade deal with Brazil over Amazon fires.
Macron, Merkel, Trudeau all putting Amazon on G7 agenda.
UK... has been sipping champagne with Bolsonaro's govt this week, angling for a trade deal. And Johnson is silent.
Few people realise that this country has fragments of a globally rare habitat: temperate rainforest.
Can you help me map the lost rainforests of England?
👇A brief thread about my new side-project:
Hugely excited that the Duchy of Cornwall, working with their tenant farmer &
@NaturalEngland
, will expand the iconic temperate rainforest of Wistman's Wood through natural regeneration
I hope this inspires others to bring back Britain's lost rainforests
Under the radar, Tory MPs & landowning lobbyists are trying to undermine nature protections in England.
Yesterday, Tory MP Derek Thomas tabled a Bill in Parliament to strip Natural England of its power to create nature reserves (SSSIs) & instead give that power to Ministers. 1/
*2 weeks to stop the criminalisation of trespass*
Ramblers, wild campers, Travellers & protestors aren't criminals - but soon, they could be.
Sign our petition to stop the govt criminalising trespass- 58,000 have signed; we need 100k for MPs to debate it
Let's bring back Britain's lost rainforests!
Our new maps show that 20% of Britain has a climate suitable for temperate rainforest, but that rainforest now covers just 1% of the country.

worked closely with Caroline to develop this Bill. Here's what it says 🧵 1/
Today I have been exploring a grouse moor and pondering why we’ve let c.150 landowners wreck England’s most important carbon store for the past century and a half
Pic shows eroding peat hags, leaching carbon to the air & into streams
We have fragments of temperate rainforest in Britain, and very few seem to know about it. This oak tree in Devon is supporting hundreds of polypody ferns on its moss-covered branches, thanks to the damp climate:
On the left, a symbol of selfish individualism & humanity's destructiveness
#SycamoreGap
On the right, a sign of humanity's last best hope: collective political action to restore nature
#RestoreNatureNow
Let the next year see a great uprising for nature
There are 48,000 acres of golf courses within London and the Metropolitan Green Belt (shown in red on map below)
Why not open them up to public for exercise, as
@RosamundUrwin
suggests?
Easier to maintain social distancing if existing parks less crowded.
Rather than closing big parks so more people end up packed into the smaller parks, how about reclaiming green space in London, like this enormous, empty golf course? Turn the golf courses into exercise spots. More green space for everyone, social distancing made easier.
BREAKING: The right to wild camp on Dartmoor has been restored!
Darwall's court case sparked a huge backlash & the biggest land rights protest in a generation.

Featuring Welsh wizards, mossy trees, Celtic myths & lichens galore, my book's out on 27th October. Pre-order here:
If you want to control bracken, don’t spray it with a chemical banned by the EU in 2011.
Take bracken as a sign the land was probably once wooded, and enable trees to regenerate on it - the trees will shade out the bracken & it can become wood pasture
With the 100,000-strong Restore Nature Now march today, the nature movement in the UK took a big step forward. Not only did the large NGOs mobilise; there were also thousands of people who love their local wildlife but who’d never attended a demo before.
The green giant stirs.
Sorry to be a downer on this, but Britain cut down a third of its ancient woodland between 1950 & 1980, and much of the recent afforestation has been conifer monocultures
We need much more emphasis on natural regeneration of biodiverse woods, inc temperature rainforests
Good news of the day:
Scotland's forest cover is nearly back to where it was 1,000 years ago.
And many other countries are also reversing centuries of deforestation.
@mrianleslie
Call me old-fashioned, but since the National Trust was founded precisely to preserve natural beauty, it’s more than entitled to have opinions on the climate crisis and what this country is doing (or failing to do) about it.
REVEALED: Just 124 landowners own most of England's deep peat, our single largest carbon store.
The UK Govt - and the public - urgently need to challenge these landowners to protect and restore our peatlands.

Brilliant news that

I spoke to

Farmer jailed for destroying SSSI on River Lugg - good
The Judge said it was “ecological vandalism on an industrial scale"

Bracken is thought by some to be an indicator of former woodland.

Can we use bracken maps as a guide for regenerating temperate rainforest? 🧵1/n
So far
@UKLabour
have pledged to:
- End all new oil & gas drilling
- Bring in a Scottish-style right to roam
- Invest £28bn/ year in climate jobs
- Let councils buy land cheaply to tackle housing crisis
- Bring in a Community Right to Buy
Sounds pretty transformational to me...

Revealed: English grouse moor estates got £10million in public subsidies last year.
Why is the UK Government giving hand-outs to such an ecologically destructive elite sport?
*Drum roll* I'm writing a 3rd book:
THE LIE OF THE LAND
To be published by
@WmCollinsBooks
Autumn 2024
It will examine landowners' claims of stewardship; grouse moors; fenland drainage; invasive species - & put paid to the old lie: that only those who own land can care for it.
Our petition to stop the criminalisation of trespass has passed 100,000 signatures - so MPs in Parliament will debate it! THANKYOU EVERYONE!
Next step: ensuring the voices of Travellers, protestors, ramblers, kayakers & everyone who'd be impacted by this are heard in the debate.

Got totally soaked in the rain yesterday, but it was worth it - because I found a tiny fragment of temperate rainforest, huddled in a valley on Dartmoor's edge.
Even better, the old hazels were teeming with rare Hazel Gloves fungus - previously unrecorded at this location! 1/

REVEALED: Landowners in England have been paid £9billion in 'stewardship' payments over past 30yrs - yet nature continues to decline
Large landowners should be required to publish reports showing how they are stewarding land for nature and carbon 1/
REVEALED: Just 131 shoots and game farms are responsible for rearing and releasing 6.2million pheasants in England - according to new official figures I obtained using FOI law
Pheasant shooting is an industry out of control: time for nationwide licensing

- Create free-for-all ‘Investment zones’ & rip up planning
- Remove pollution rules so even more shit goes in rivers

Therese Coffey casually dismissing the rights of millions of people to access nature, and rather foolishly discounting the votes of the 62% of the British public who'd rather like a Scottish-style

England's upland peat - our largest carbon store - is owned by 150 grouse moor estates, who damage it through burning.

Today a group of us went for a trespass in the Duke of Somerset’s woods at Berry Pomeroy near Totnes.

The UK is self-sufficient in meat & dairy - production of which takes up a huge area of land - but only grows 50% of its veg.
If the NFU really cared about food security it’d call for a reduction in meat & dairy production & consumption and more focus on horticulture. Will it?
