Encountered a hunt yesterday whilst out walking at Haytor on Dartmoor. Shortly before they arrived, we'd also seen a fox bolting across the moor. Presumably the hunt had driven it from its hole ('earth') and blocked the entrance? Thought fox hunting was illegal? 🤔

If you want to control bracken, don’t spray it with a chemical banned by the EU in 2011. Take bracken as a sign the land was probably once wooded, and enable trees to regenerate on it - the trees will shade out the bracken & it can become wood pasture

England's upland peat - our largest carbon store - is owned by 150 grouse moor estates, who damage it through burning. @ZacGoldsmith has pledged to end moorland burning. Today The Times reports "plans to ban peat-burning appear to have been abandoned". Is this true, Minister?

@bencaldecott Quick question Ben: do you agree or disagree with the RSPB that the government have lied about not weakening environmental protections?

I’m delighted that the Prime Minister has today announced a new rainforests strategy for England: This is something I called for in my book & campaigned for with @SeahorseEnv . Thousands of you signed our petition calling for a strategy. Thread: 1/

Picking up litter can be an unrewarding task, but today amidst the discarded drinks cans I found… a £5 note! Jackpot! 😂 Now, if only the government would finally introduce a Deposit Return Scheme, everyone who picks up litter would be quids in…

Today a group of us went for a trespass in the Duke of Somerset’s woods at Berry Pomeroy near Totnes. We found a vast pheasant shoot, the publicly inaccessible wood wrecked by forestry & weight of pheasant numbers, & dying pheasants - all propped up by public money. Thread 1/n

A major critic of Natural England has quietly been appointed to Natural England's board by Ministers. Landowner Mark Tufnell, ex-President of the Country Land & Business Association, called for "a full scale review of NE's remit". How landed power works.

Today I trespassed upon land belonging to a Duke’s Trust, saw a Duke of Burgundy butterfly (appropriately!) & fields of cowslips, picked up shooting detritus, released a crow from a corvid trap, & chatted to a veteran access activist. Research for book 3, The Lie of the Land :)

Victory takes time. But after 5 years of emails, meetings, letters to councillors, rallies, beach parties with @BillOddie & direct action, we've finally saved Druridge Bay from an opencast coal mine. This is the end of coal in the UK. @SaveDruridge

If you want another reason to read ‘Who Owns England?’, I present to you today’s hatchet-job Sunday Telegraph review by the climate denying, landowner-defending, grouse-moor-loving, disgraced former Environment Secretary Owen Paterson #BadgeOfHonour cc @MilesKing10

The UK is self-sufficient in meat & dairy - production of which takes up a huge area of land - but only grows 50% of its veg. If the NFU really cared about food security it’d call for a reduction in meat & dairy production & consumption and more focus on horticulture. Will it?
