@RyeRhythmic
I really, rly do think that Shigaraki's quirk does not destroy everything he touches, but instead destroys everything he hates, and that's why AFO has to keep him in a state of hating everything. Just realized I've never made this thought its own post but it's a longstanding one
In MHA, one thing you have to remember is that we’re limited to the POV of the character whose eyes we’re looking through. For example, in Bakugo’s head, the chapter that Midoriya titles “Deku vs Kacchan Part 1” is actually Deku vs Kacchan Part 4,390
The hero killer arc featured Tenya carrying a heavy burden by himself & trying to keep it hidden, and a friend being just intuitive enough to see it in time to save him. Tenya feels a responsibility to pay that forward! He also doesn’t mean this unkindly toward his classmates
TW rape—You don’t need to want the SA read of AFOFA and that’s fine.
It’s not “making everything sexual.” It’s abt how AFO put his genetic material inside Yoichi in order to violate his bodily autonomy as much as possible & feel ownership of him. That’s what we’re talking about.
God Ochako was fully willing to die in order to make sure one person once had done the right thing for Himiko. Like she was fully willing to die for that I don't think she was even parsing it as any kind of exchange it was just an incidental consequence. Ochako
I feel like the reason people think Horikoshi doesn’t use his full cast is because of some members of 1-A being background characters. Which is funny because like. He did need to fill the classroom.
OFA, to each of them, is...
Kudo: Yoichi
Bruce: Yoichi
Hikage: intensely spiritual experience
Banjo: smth that can help me do more saving
En: the death cult I joined
Nana: a heavy burden, that can help me do more saving
Toshi & Izuku: a chance to be something
Bakugo: yeah, cult
Tenko doesn't destroy the gloves, which he thinks of as protecting people/things from him. He doesn't destroy the gloves because he does not hate them.
Many months ago Jacob pointed out that there are moments when his quirk doesn't destroy something he's touching as long as he's not aware of it, and the rest of this theory just snapped into place.
It’s so funny and mildly tragic that Tenya gets saved (like properly, long-term saved) first, then spends the rest of MHA looking at other people’s lowest points and going “now where have I heard that before”
MHA fans keep being like God it will be so subversive when Deku has the soul crushing realization that the punitive justice system is right and, in fact, the status quo doesn’t even hurt people bad /enough/
From putting on the armor as a costume to the armor crumbling off of him in a moment of offering raw vulnerability to taking the armor off to put it on someone else on purpose
If you showed Toshinori this chart he would insist that you're lying but then he shows Torino and Torino snorts and goes "yeah"
.....sorry for the completely uneven spread
The ONLY question in my mind is. Will this reveal be via failing to Decay one of his friends or via Tenko reaching out for Deku. Potentially both, in that order
…….okay but eye and mouth analysis. Dabi framing his entire face openly vs Hawks who both has extremely limited agency and who perhaps can be said to further limit it by believing he has none covering his own mouth
If AFO was “born evil” it would completely undermine MHA’s messaging that there aren’t just some people who are born bad. It’s not AFO apologism, it’s just… avoiding getting eugenicsy
Also, not being in control of “how evil you are” would defang, almost FORGIVE, the evil.
“We should try to notice when friends are suffering silently and figure out how to reach out proactively” is a pretty reasonable take, but I understand why this scene can be hard to parse! That’s what he’s saying.
@zoeyouknow53
I think in that moment he hated everything. I think it's kind of showing us very intentionally that the emotion of hating something in a moment like that is not the same as being a heartless person/not containing love too.
...AFO gets a visible-eyes covered-mouth panel this chapter.
I think that gives us. Some insight. Into what he is feeling. Eyes are honest emotion, mouths are narrative-maker. He FEELS he's been robbed of power that he deserves and needs. He didn't get to write the story.
TW rape: Shoto and OFA as children of rape. And the power and necessity of "it's your quirk, your body, your life, your power, not his. You define what this body is. This is a good body that belongs to you and it does good things."
I wish people would ask questions in good faith instead of immediately going “fuck off.” I think a lot of people’s first experience with the word “incest” is in a genre of fiction that treats it as consensual and don’t realize it’s a word for abuse which needs no modification
Some are tired of stories about being able to save ppl but I think what folks miss is that MHA is not a response to hopeful stories. It responds to some stories, but it is also to a reality that doesnt save people. Asking why Jin isn’t “people” if heroes save people is about irl.
Wondering if the appearance of the Toshinori vestige (or vestige-lookalike) is actually going to have to do with some kind of mechanical quirk manifestation of 'OFA is about people.'
"A network of power that links people's hearts"?
The fandom should think Tenya is more insane for running toward Shigaraki I think. We as a fandom should talk more about “hey Ingenium why are you coming you can’t fly dude” “maybe so. but consider: those are my friends”
There are two ingredients to being saved in MHA. Someone has to give help that you aren't ready to ask for, and you have to be able to feel that You, Too, Can Be A Hero.
Toga's talking about how maybe if she had felt like that sooner, she would've felt like life was worth more
Shoto and Tensei in a support group called my brother tried to commit murder-suicide and I think he still only understands like about two-thirds of what was fucked up about that
Still thinking abt this. Izuku and Inko get Toshinori this shirt in an effort to genuinely avoid confusion and all THREE of them completely misunderstand that it’s not meant to be literal and will make people think Toshinori is, in fact, a stepdad
There is a specific kind of violation inherent in this type of abuse- a kind of violation that AFO specifically wants to commit- that feels like anything from a worthy metaphor (for a horrible, horrible act of evil) to potentially an implication of other, similar acts.
@DabisPoleDance
@RukasuMHA
I agree but it’s funny bc Tsu is one of the only characters I actually wouldn’t apply this to. She just went from :} to :} in an intricately detailed suit
What’s particularly important to me about this is that in all of the previous instances shown here it’s silent in his head. That’s what “giving help that isn’t asked for is the essence of being a hero” is about. No one should have needed this child to ask.
Japan’s criminal justice system has a 99% conviction rate. People around the world subscribe to social dynamics in which some people are acceptable—tragic but expected—losses. Suggesting that Hori is saying something tired and cliché that doesn’t need saying anymore is absurd.
Or at least- that is a valid read. You do NOT have to want to fw it or hear anything about it or incorporate it into your understanding of canon or think about it ever again (as long as you don’t act like the people who do think about and analyze it are oversexualizing freaks).
The discussion begins with how AFO is specifically motivated to violate Yoichi’s bodily autonomy in the most deeply intrusive way he can, and doing it makes him feel a sense of ownership.
The reason Toga learns that she and Jin aren't human to hero society is that hero society exists "to save people." They aren't "people." They're a threat to "people." No matter how much they have saved each other, no matter where she or Jin would be without the League.
Essentially Iida is saying he feels that there must have been signs. Maybe there were and maybe there weren’t, Iida is sixteen and doing his best to put together the philosophy of how he wants to live his life (as sixteen year olds are often busy doing), but he feels that way!
What was the purpose of
Ochako: [soft pink lighting as she watches Izuku. is he thinking about her too?]
Izuku: I can see the shape of Iida's body in my mind right now
“Hair gets chopped off in battle” for Mic, listen to me. What’s that? All your grandiose defensive personality is crumbling and can’t defend you from this? What’s that you also incidentally look like your teen self now?
May I just say my longest yeahboi ever. ENDEAVOR WAS NEVER A RELIABLE NARRATOR ABOUT THIS!!!!
Villains aren’t villains because they’re born being the wrong kind of people. This isn’t AFO apologism for a second it’s just that no it’s not abt having a villain soul.
The fact that she was dying in the time it took to make sure Himiko ever in her life felt understood is like. Once Ochako started losing a lot of blood and committing to that choice I do not think she was even thinking about the tradeoff in tradeoff terms

MIGHT HAVE BEAT ME TO THIS WAY BACK WHEN WE FIRST STARTED SAYING IT IN WHICH CASE SORRY FOR POSTING IT LIKE ITS MINE BESTIE. I think we had the same revelation in the same conversation but it's you who provided the ingredients

If you’ve made it this far, first of all, you didn’t have to, and thanks for your time. I hope you’re able to moderate your space in a way that makes your experience of this fandom enjoyable and good. Avoiding what triggers/squicks you IS still a full and authentic fan experience
And before anyone says it, no I truly don’t think Iida is even CAPABLE of making Midoriya feel bad for missing the signs lmao. If anything, extending the idea of “we missed the signs that something was wrong” to the entire class shifts some of that regret off Midoriya’s shoulders
Imagine being so good at using an ensemble cast that people are demanding to know why, idk, that girl who sicced those guys on Junpei Yoshino or the violin boy who Sayaka Miki makes her deal for don’t have full character arcs
My favorite is the blue haired, knight-coded best friend who winds up being the first to fall, by not knowing how to emotionally handle their love for someone who they consider the most talented in the world, and whose talent was taken from them, for which they were hospitalized
And he was wrong about it the first time but correct about it…. literally every other time. All he needed was to be told ONCE “not everything is the hero killer arc.” Ever since, he’s been like “right. nuance” and he’s NAILING it <3
Also, I actually never... focused hard enough on this specific face when this page came out, if you'll believe it. But since the I've been bringing the "haha what if AFO doesn't know who Hikage is" thing back: does he see Hikage here. Do we think
I think a lot abt the AFO vs OFA philosophy- AFO believes he still owns any power he gives people; OFA is interested in trusting people enough to do true empowerment, it’s your quirk not mine.
If your Tenya Iida characterization wouldn’t shout “A PUNCH TO THE SCROTUM IS UNFORGIVABLE” while cradling his best friend in his arms as if he’s been shot. Then you’re doing it wrong
Okay but a moment of emotion for Izuku being like “my hero name is Deku!” and Ochako being like “yeah!!! yeah!!!!!!!” and Tenya (once he gets through the week from hell and…registers this information at all) having a silent, internal “that seems… really emotionally complicated”

MHA is about! Society abandoning! The child and the mother!! The change couldn’t have come from the mother this time some things are too big for the family to carry alone!!!!!
OFA holders: long string of strangers who never got to know most of each other’s names bound by commitment to good
me: ok keep all of that. but now they live in an apartment together having silly little times
The Todoroki and Midoriya relationship is way more interesting to me when analyzed under the fact that like. Iida, Uraraka, Bakugo, and Todoroki have all in some capacity declared rivalry but Todoroki did imo rescind his. They aren’t rivals and that is in fact so fascinating
Genuinely genuinely genuinely I think a lot of the fandom's struggle to understand Iida and Midoriya's closeness comes from like. Idk it seems harder to understand if you neither are nor have ever been very close with someone who is autistic in the way Iida is.
It’s very fun to me that out of all MHA charachter standoms out there, in my experience I feel like Iida fans, Shigaraki fans, and AFO… analyzers? appreciators?… are the most consistently like ogh look at hte fuckijn symbolism
I've fallen out of favor and I've fallen from grace, fallen out of trees and I've fallen on my face—
This is the fastest I have thus far managed to AMV anything. In the weeks after posting the panels, it haunted me

^^^^^This is a genuine wish with no strange undertones. Moderating your own space is hard, this is a weird time in MHA fandom for people triggered by (or otherwise seeking to avoid) this topic, and I hope you’re able to find your breathing room.
The tragedy known to all MHA "canon but with one tweak" AU'ers is that Mineta is literally the hardest character to remove from the USJ. That's like a solid 60 more villains we need to account for now and they're all following right behind our protagonist
1 - There's no WAY Compress wasn't talking about "Give him back to me" "Bakugo is his own person" later
2 - That War Arc Moment..... He Saw Enough
3 - if all else fails maybe Aoyama just gossiped (this one is a joke)
This isnt a response to any one particular post, it's an idea I've seen floating around a lot: Reminder that, in MHA, wanting to be saved is not a prerequisite to being saved
In fact, it thrusts a spotlight on how that can't be the prerequisite. Giving help that isn't asked for.
The “everyone’s a main character” thing isn’t meant to be a demand MHAnis literally capable of meeting, it’s instead fleshing out each individual person in MHA as on a journey to become the greatest hero to point out smth about how the world works.
Sorry I’ve said this before but what I love about the Izuku-Bakugo river scene is that the water only comes up to his knees. Like yeah. You’ve never needed saving, and being LIKE people who need saving is an insult to you.
This show is about to kick off with you drowning
That's why the villains will become heroes. Not to pay the price to deserve to live. But because the problem at the heart of MHA is disempowerment. Because they need to KNOW that they, too, can be a hero—that the way they are matters within a community they are a part of.
There are corners of AFOFA fandom that I won’t touch with a ten foot pole, believe me. But many of us don’t want this to be what happened to Yoichi, but do want to discuss it, because there is a worthy story (of a horrible evil act) that seems told on purpose.
@HelgaGrin
I kicked off the OFAswap AU AFTER this reveal and oh my God the backbending required. Yes Eighth!Creati’s body is constantly using Creation to repair itself, no she literally does not know how long and extensively it has been doing that
Thinking again abt Izuku as the only OFA successor who gets to well and truly save his predecessor, and Toshinori as the only predecessor who gets to well and truly stay by his successor’s side
The reason the Hero Killer Arc kicks off the entire series' tone shift is because it's actually just built to explain everything that is about to happen. Esp when the series was planned to be shorter, like— that's an arc built to do LIKE 75% of the theme set-up
Iida & Deku's friendship is so easy to glom onto. I love so many of the plots here but for Iida & Deku all you really need to imagine is one of them going "you're the first person I thought to call" & the other going "thank you for that" & in ANY context I'm already on the floor
I love it when people explain the shit I don’t understand in MHA to me. Truly, I would not understand Hawks or Yoichi or Shoto as well without other peoples posts. I just enjoy explaining what I think about Tenya when someone says a scene doesn’t make sense. xkcd “lucky 10,000”
Please do not be hostile about “reading comprehension.” For one, the scene actually is kind of hard to read, and for another the original post at this time has no retweets, 19 likes, and 10 quote retweets. It’s just a random post
Thinking abt SeroIida's friend Shoto
Tenya: Shoto, can I ask you to keep a secret, I want to do something special for Hanta for our upcoming anniversary
Shoto: no
Tenya: wh-. ok, but you kept a secret from me for months before my last birthday. can I ask why this is different
@habkart
@antleredCouncil
These two are really good, actually, I'm kind of immediately onboard. Yeah.
The fact that u made me stare at three drawings of a ship and go "oh yeah I see exactly how this works and it's just IC and really good" has GOT to be a testament to the expressiveness of ur art
just realized that if Shinso goes to Class A, which he almost definitely will, MonoShin becomes my literally fucking favorite ship situation to throw Monoma into: Forbidden Lovers (forbidden only by Monoma)
he recites Romeo and Juliet lines about it he will not shut up
AFO going "you reap what you sow, Endeavor!!" and not believing that the combined force of Yoichi, people who loved Yoichi, people who loved someone who loved someone who [...] who loved Yoichi, and Tomura Shigaraki are going to ruin his game... is HILARIOUS cognitive dissonance
Thinking about SeroIida's mutual friend Shoto again
Hanta, via text: ok but he's not like. seeing anyone, right
Shoto, texting back hours later: I mean, not that I'm aware of
Hanta: why would you not be aware of that don't you hang out all the time
I still can’t believe that peoples read of the hero killer arc is that tenya has anger issues. Like that he just gets angry more easily than other people, and anger wells up inside him. Like, yeah, the way he does anger is autistic, but also someone tried to kill his brother
The thing abt evil as a choice is sometimes the evil thing is the easier choice & that’s the reason a person does it. And that’s why I think it’s extremely good that OFA was born from not only Yoichi’s resistance but also 2nd choosing to do good despite it being infinitely harder
