Every night before bed is an opportunity to review the day past, decide where amends will need to be made in the morning, and gratitude expressed in prayer for the blessings that day. The next morning you get a fresh 24 to glorify God and become the saint He desires you to be.
Interesting to read Roman Catholic Twitter blowing up because a majority of bishops voted in favor of Catholic doctrine and teaching. The church does not set doctrine by popular public opinion - she has to speak the truth even when uncomfortable.
32 years ago tonight I had my last night of drinking. It was a doozy. I will never forget how the drinking started that night, and coming to the next morning in the hallway of my apt. building. Most of in-between is a black out. In recovery we never forget our last drink/bender
A reminder friends - if you are looking to lose weight/improve health by eating
@keto
DO NOT fall for the offers of pills/powders/supplements or buy food labeled Keto. Just eat real food! Meat, healthy fats (many are), and non-starchy veggies. Don’t waste you money the others
This week, 35 years ago, my father and his drinking buddy, also sober, 12-Stepped me. I didn’t realize it at the time. They told drinking together stories, what it was like first joining AA, and how good life was now. I enjoyed the crazy drinking episode stories. (Continued….)
Btw I am feeling good about the fact that I didn’t deviate from my
#keto
eating at all for Thanksgiving. Woke up this morning w/o that carb bloat hangover of years past. 74 pounds lost since May 21, and 119 since 2018. Thank you to twitter keto encouragers and good examples!
Prayers this evening include for those drinking their way into the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. Many of us are here after failed New Years Resolutions made us face the fact that we had a problem with our drinking. Thank God for those sharing hope in sobriety with others.
Happy 4 year

anniversary to me! Highest weight was 302lbs. Managed to get down to 159 to race lightweight but have settled and comfortable at 162 to 165 lbs. (striking range to suck weight to 159 again for weigh ins). It is not a diet but how I eat now. 🧵
I have been the priest at the church next to Comerica Park in a block away from Ford Field for 21 years. And I’m still surprised at the price of parking nearby.
Was googling something else and realized that I have been
#keto
abstaining from starch and sugar for 832 days (May 21, 2020). I am the healthiest/fittest I have been since my college rowing days in the mid 1980s and weigh what I did back then, down 140 from 302lbs.
About 8 hours post surgery. Had a nap but kept getting interrupted by the low heart beat alarm (being a masters athlete my resting heart rate falls below 50). Also, with a la cart menu I am eating

So I thought the intestinal infection on the cruise ship was getting better. Got worse, helicoptered me off the ship to hospital and removed 2/3 of my Large Intestine. Yipes. Prayers please
32 years later I am grateful to be in bed next to my wife, the mother of my 4 children, and a productive member of society —

by God’s Grace One Day at a time. And raising up a prayer for the still suffering alcoholic.
Celebrated my 3 year keto-versary today by going to Benediction tonight at the Church where I made the decision to make the change, and then came home to jalapeño poppers made by my son. 3 years of

eating and maintaining my goal - 140lbs lighter than my highest weight
View from the air mattress in my office. Gotta be up early to plug in the coffee pots for the Detroit Thanksgiving Day parade. Looking forward to welcoming folks buying breakfast and watching the parade with us.
@DoctorTro
Once I understood my addiction to starches and sugars leading to cravings & binge eating it was a life-changer! Applied the AA principle if you don’t have the first drink you can’t get drunk - if I don’t have the first bite of starch/sugar I won’t binge or crave. 140lbs lost!
33 years ago today four of us attended a first
#AA
meeting together. One of those guys I was just messaging with. He and I are both celebrating our
#sober
anniversary. The other two guys drank again. One later committed suicide, the other died DUI
I muse on this, this time of year with gratitude for AA sobriety. Also do so in prayer for those who will discover through failed New Year Resolution that they have a problem with alcohol. We are here to help.
Had a conversation with a fellow working on losing weight with a cardiologist who has told him the only way is a vegetarian diet. The guy is miserable. I mentioned how much weight I had lost on Keto and he said - “oh my doc said eating fat is bad for me.” I suggested a new doc
This photo was the day we got engaged 2/20/1994. We met exactly 6 months earlier at a church conference in Shrewsbury, MA. She lived in Boston, I was in seminary in Wisconsin. We got to know each other by mail and rare phone call. Photo taken in Philly.
The comments on this are great 🙂
If y'all wouldn't mind dropping a comment/quote tweet of where you met your spouse & a pic - people seem interested 🤷🏻♂️
We met on hinge 🙏
Annoyed by all the
#Keto
ads I am getting over on Instagram. “Only ______ net carbs” but the ingredient list is chemical crap. Sticking to eating real food. I don’t need a chemical cookie or treat to get the nutrition I need.
Prayer this morning for all those who are hung-over, make a resolution to stop drinking or cut back, only to find themselves drunk again soon. Many of us in Alcoholics Anonymous have similar experiences in January and eventually found lasting sobriety. My first AA meeting 1/17/89

My car lease is almost up (2 months) and I am within 800 miles of my limit. Got a pull ahead offer at
@LaethemVillage
so I will be picking up this new

charger Friday and turning in my Jeep. Looking forward to getting back into a sedan.
My son William is having lathroscopic surgery today to repair the part of his intestine where he get diverticulitis, and remove his appendix. Prayers please for him and his surgical team

I am grateful for Mike and my Dad sharing their experience, strength and hope by telling me “what it was like, what happened, and what it is like now” to plant the seed - 12 step work at its best.
@FeminaStudiosa
I have done weddings for many under 24. I think they have a greater rate of staying together than some of those I have married who are in their 30s and 40s. In my last parish I married many high school sweethearts, baptised their 1st kids, and now see the kids graduating college
6:30 AM phone call from the surgeon from Finland. The pathology lab results from my surgery three weeks ago today confirmed her initial observation - No Tumor, No Cancer.
Thanks be to God.
When I came to and cleaned up, took another nap, decided to read Evening Prayer in apartment. Opened church flier for readings and saw there was an AA mtg there that night. “Last night is something like my dad and Mike talked about”. “Am I an alcoholic?” Attended & sober since
Had a good day of hospital visiting, some admin work, pastoral phone calls, saying Mass and leading Evening Prayer, and having our vestry (parish board) meeting. Then home with my family. All possible bc I am sober another day by God’s grace & 12 Steps of AA - 35 yrs sober today
@Joeinblack
When I did CPE in seminary my bishop told me to wear clericals. The others in the group couldn’t believe how many more interactions I had with patients, family and staff - I couldn’t hide with the collar on. It was an invitation to others in need
@BrianLenzkes
The problem is you’re actually using a glucose monitor to get your conclusion. But what you have to do is fill out a survey from Harvard about what you ate. That’s how real science is apparently done.
@AmyDee1001
I had a cardiologist who ran tests, read results, and proclaimed that I was “the healthiest patient he had seen in months”. When I mentioned it was on keto I had lost the 140lbs, gotten BP down to 110/70, resting heart rate 50BPM, etc. he said
#keto
was unhealthy SHM
@KevinDr_ver
Better yet if everyone over the age of 30 worked on their metabolic health by eschewing processed foods (carbs in particular) and making physical fitness a part of their daily routine then a pharmaceutical solution is unnecessary.
My first 2 months of sobriety (35 years ago) I received an early morning phone call from my sober dad saying “isn’t it nice to wake up the day after St. Patrick’s Day rather than ‘come to’?” Grateful for 35 years of no hangover on March 18.

is here to help.

: A UK court order is forcing a mentally ill and disabled woman, a Nigerian Catholic, to have an abortion.
A court is ordering a woman who does not want to have an abortion to have one. Read that again.

@Joeinblack
While I was away from practicing the faith my grandmother kept reminding my mother that I would be back because God was calling me to be a priest. She used to say my guardian angel got combat pay during those years
We receive a dozen requests a week on the phone or at the office door from people with no affiliation to the parish. The few resources we have we use to support the members of the church who may have a need. We also tithe of our budget to several local social service agencies🧵
I called 13+ churches in my area asking if they could help a family whose water was about to get shut off and they all said some version of, "No, we don't do that." They acted Like I was weird for asking.
@Joeinblack
@luinalaska
Those were crazy times! When my diocese limited us to 9 people plus the priest (in my 800 seat sanctuary) I ended up saying 3 Saturday evening Masses and 7 on Sunday for 4 months to accommodate those who wanted to attend.
@WorldofRobert1
1) they have a problem that it is a spiritual program
2) they failed because they haven’t thoroughly followed the steps so therefore they think it couldn’t be their fault so they blame the program
3) they are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves
Actually Christmas starts after Evening Prayer on December 24th with the 12 days of Christmas (the actual Christmas Season) being Dec 25-January 5. End of November and most of December is Advent, not Christmas. Thank you for coming to The Church’s TED Talk.
@johnhawkinsrwn
@MattWalshBlog
I keep hearing that 40-50% figure tossed around. Of the 150 or so marriages I have done divorces are less than 20%, lower if they are regular in Mass attendance.
@FrGoyo
Other things learned
1) stay out of God’s way - He’s the one in charge
2) thank God for our laity who put up with our failings, and who love us and pray for us anyway
3) worst thing to hear is “Father I know you are busy but...”. Never be too busy for your parishioners!!!
Would you say the same to an alcoholic in recovery whose kids brewed them a beer or distilled them an alcoholic drink? It’s not a cheat meal, it’s a relapse.
One year ago today, pandemic shut down rules being relaxed by Gov., I returned to rowing for the first time in 33 years Now a year later, and 85 pounds lighter, I am grateful (most days...5 AM is still rough)
Back downtown and reopened the church. Within 5 minutes 20 people on the way to the Red Wings game stopped in to take a look and say a prayer.

Urgent prayer request - my parishioner who has been on a ventilator since early March, and who broke her hip two weeks ago, was just taken from her nursing center to Beaumont Hospital Farmington unresponsive and irregular breathing. Prayers for Joanne please
Dd17 had her high school field hockey banquet tonight. Academic All-State, lots of other accolades. She a great player and kid (but I may be biased). Now on to club field hockey….
@SeanPDailey2
Parish was on the verge of being closed for non-attendance and
@ICKSP
revived it using original high altar. Without them the Baptist group that the diocese would have sold it to for pennies on the dollar when it closed wouldn’t use it either
Wow. This Detroit City Fieldhouse, owned by
@DetroitCityFC
is really nice! One of my daughter’s field hockey teams is having practice here. I drive by there often and am on the foundation board of the neighboring cemetery
I just got off the phone with my surgeon. He said the labs came back negative for cancer which we assumed was true anyway. With no issues at all just four days post surgery he told me that I could start using the rowing machine, gently at first, on Thursday. This guy gets me!
@EricChance
When I was going through some rough patches in early sobriety I was eating a pint of butter pecan ice cream a day. I should have realized those 34 years ago that alcohol was not my only addiction to be dealt with (stopped smoking too about 30 years ago)
@koleszar_matt
“Joel Brown, a 54-year-old former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services employee who worked within the Children’s Services Agency Office of Advocate for Children, Youth and Families, is among those charged.” - homeschooling wasn’t/isn’t the problem
@CoachKurtHines
@ACBellino
Bravo for you and that young man. I quit football my senior year to concentrate on the sport I loved, rowing. Ended up being recruited, rowed
@Pennlwt
and I rowed today (37 years later).
Hmmm. Guess he didn’t like that I pointed out that he criticizes the Roman Church in the same way that he criticized the Episcopal Church when he was a priest with us. Some people aren’t happy unless they are actively agitated and proving self one of the elite few right-thinkers
As I sat in the church by myself at 4:55 thinking I was overly optimistic to schedule a 5 PM Easter Day Evening Prayer Service. Then two parishioners showed up just as we were starting, and then a young couple from the neighborhood joined us bc the door was open. Glad we did it!
