Demands started at Rs 5 crore and today we settled at 0! Even in her supreme court application, she demanded Rs 1.5 cr. Mind you, this is unprecedented. We fought with all our might cuz we were clear to not pay anything after what she & her parents put us through. Most cave in.

Why am I sharing this? Mental toll aside, fighting for justice in India is prohibitively expensive. We could fight cuz we had the means but the costs have set us back massively. A big chunk of dad's retirement money is gone, brother suffered major losses in business.

Yes, we'll earn the money back and r glad that it's over, but not every1's as fortunate. I've heard stories where people gave up all their assets to settle the case. Many innocent people are in jail cuz they can't afford a good lawyer. It's a financial emergency noone prepares...

General investment advise is to not put all your eggs in one basket. Porinju Veliyath @porinju does exactly the opposite of that. He's not only 100% in equities, but within equities, 100% in small-, micro caps. He says he'll never advise others to follow his style. (1/2)

@sudhinbathija The fact that she'll live with the burn scar, embarrassment & defeat of not getting a single penny is compensation enough for me. Ours is a rare case. My brother was prepared to fight for 5-10 yrs. Sincerely hope this becomes the norm, too many lives getting destroyed in courts.

Many MNC employees with #Esops , RSUs are in the tax soup. These and dividend income that the parent company pays out count as foreign assets. People don't know this and miss reporting them in ITR. Result? Tax dept can scrutinise such cases under Black Money Act. 1/n

After Axis Magnus, HDFC Infinia is the most rewarding credit card for high spenders. It earns a min 3.33% on most redemption options, gives a sweet 1:1 deal on revenue flight/hotel bookings (no hassle of transfer) and even redeeming pts on vouchers is more rewarding than Magnus.

Women in such cases don't care about saving the marriage. False 498A cases are filed either for extortion or to get back at the husband for refusing to be her personal bitch. Biggest sufferers are the man's parents, they never get past the harrasment and torture

AIS was released to ease tax filing. Has it? To an extent, yes. But, for equity transactions, it's laden with errors & the onus of correcting errors is on taxpayers, increasing their compliance burden. You can't fully rely on AIS yet. Full story:

When banks were selling cheap loans past 2 yrs, they didn't inform borrowers how the EMIs/tenure will change if the interest rates were to increase. In case of a rate hike, by default, banks increase the tenure and not EMI because a longer tenure earns them more interest.

Get an elusive credit card by buying a ULIP or other traditional insurance plan. Looks like the tax saving pitch is not working enough to mis-sell insurance. Don't buy any life insurance except term plan. Certainly don't fall for rewards on CC will make up for the low returns

@yogisach1 Again mentioning, it's not paid promotion, just trying to connect with right person at HDFC bank if someone want to go for infinia with investment route. Also ULIP is one of the option not mandatory option, there are other options too like Insurance or guaranteed return plans.

@ayomip01 @ActusDei That's right. But that doesn't take away the shock of seeing your interest outgo shoot up massively in just 1 yr when you took the loan with the expectation of paying a much lower rate. Besides, it's not hidden that banks don't reduce rates as fast as they increase them.

Kenya's silver medalist in women's 5000 mtr was disqualified for allegedly obstructing a fellow runner during the run (it's on camera btw). The officials challenged the DQ and got the medal reinstated the next day. Wonder IOA even tried to challenge Vinesh's disqualification.

TCS mess doesn't end here. Tour packages booked with a credit card are exempt up to Rs 7 lakh, whereas those with debit cards aren't. This is because there's no mechanism to verify the purpose of payment made through a CC. More details here:

The IT dept is sending out a flurry of tax notices to NRIs who sold property in India and did not pay capital gains tax or file an ITR. Many of these notices concern property sales dating back to 2014, 2015, so on and carry hefty penalty. Read here:

Last week, @livemint highlighted that some NRI PANs got inoperative after Aadhaar linking deadline. Affected folks told Mint they were unable to file ITR. Y'day, IT dept came out with clarification that fixes this mess. The same people have now filed their ITR successfully!

Something is VERY WRONG at @AxisBank credit card. One of my cards was used for a fraudulent txn at Uber Eats Canada. Card was reissued - suddenly fraudulent txns on new card WHICH I DONT HAVE YET. Investigation SAK 0000 233 6061 raised at Axis Bank. They REFUSED to investigate.

The most common slip up - the employer deducts TDS when these stock options are exercised, so the employees think since the tax is paid, they don't need to do anything. Big mistake! Paying tax is one thing, declaring stocks as foreign assets is another. Both need to be done.

Yes, you can use a debit or credit card instead. But these are about 5% costlier due to higher forex mark-up and a transaction fee. By switching to debit/credit cards for all your spends abroad to save the 20% upfront TCS on forex, you will shell out 5% more on each payment. 2/4

๐Ÿšจ Breaking @livemint New TCS rules will now kick in on 1 Oct (in place of 1 July). Other changes: -Rs 7 lakh limit will now apply to ALL transactions, except tour packages. Rs 7 lakh is collective limit, not individual - Tour package will demand 5% TCS till 7 lakh, then 20%
