Posing as a buyer, I was told by one woman I met in person, who was selling a worker on the site, that I could put the maid to work for as long as I liked - no breaks, no lunch. She said her current pay is the equivalent of less than £5 for each relentless day

It’s worth noting that Saudi Arabia attempted to reform the Kafala system (where Saudis essentially “own” maids) in its 2030 vision - but it doesn’t go far enough to protect domestic workers, who even after such reforms still find themselves the victims of exploitation and abuse

Several men lied to me about the bedrooms in their homes - showing pictures of all parts of the house except where I would sleep. Only after hours of pressuring for a video tour, did it become clear there was one bedroom that they wanted to share.

It is INSANE that freshers are fleeing their universities in the middle of the night because of these lockdowns, while others aren’t even allowed to buy food + have security guards watching their gates 24/7. Can’t even imagine the toll on MH. Thank god my sister deferred the year

@meehikabarua Really depends what kind of journalism you’re doing - investigative pieces can be so difficult to pull together, you need to be able to crunch data and access very difficult contacts, which takes skill. I think the more formal learning, the better for those kind of stories!
