Sometimes it takes a diagnosis, and lots and lots of drafts to make all your dreams come true...😀
I'm so so excited to be working with
@leeerinoglesby
@Flatironbooks
on a topic that's very close to my heart.
Some news, in the spirit of publishing the books that I need to see in the world ✨ I’m so excited to work with
@ShaleneGupta
on her next book, The PMS Problem.
@Flatironbooks
a couple days ago I got to marry my best friend and celebrate with a few loved ones. there was cake, there were books and rubber ducks, and it was a perfect day.
Sometimes Monday mornings start off with a bang. So so excited to be working with the incomparable
@amylizbishop
on my YA novel. Please do not expect rational communication from me for the next month other than: EEEEEeeeeEEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update: My mom, who insisted on reading Harry Potter, LOTR and all the Obama books in Chinese, sat down last night to read this as soon as I handed her a copy. Found her still reading this morning with a Chinese-English dictionary in hand. 🥺😭❤️
I have loved
@hclib
since I was a kid. Started volunteering in 6th grade, and got a summer job in 11th grade. I used to type my name into the catalog and dream about the day they carried my book.
Today my mom went in to the location I used to work at and spotted this:
It is a very strange time to be posting good news, but The Power of Trust is getting translated into Chinese. My mom asked me if that meant her name was going to be in a book in Chinese, because she's in the acknowledgements. Yes, mom, yes.❤️

At the moment I'm getting some hate for using the phrase "menstruator" in the story. Funnily enough, I've also gotten hate for using "women." What strikes me the most tragic about all of this, is it makes it even harder to talk about periods & reproductive health.
Mira, a company that produces fertility trackers, conducted a study of 150 women to see how luteinizing hormone, estrogen, and progesterone impacted various aspects of their life, including mood, sex drive, and productivity.
So thrilled that

shortlist for breakthrough idea. Congrats to our fellow short listers! A pleasure to be in your company.
Watching the comments come in for this has made it abundantly clear we need to show up for our trans friends.
To this effect, for the next week I'll be donating a dollar for every anti-trans comment or notification and unhinged email I get to the

So grateful to
@AskAManager
for answering the tough questions around how to make work work with

So grateful to

at
@BaltimoreSun
for her thoughtful coverage of
#PMDD
& The Cycle. Truly one of the most compassionate interviews I've ever sat for.
When I was on high school speech team my coach told me the most successful kids weren't the most talented or gave the best performances. The kids who became champions were the ones who could bounce back after a bad performance. I think about that a lot.
I grew up reading Alice Sebold and have been wrestling with how to read her books in light of Broadwater's innocence.
@Scaachi
's clear eyed take struck me as was extremely helpful and fair:
are you fucking kidding me
If you are a high school student in Wisconsin and want to read When the Emperor Was Divine (or Otsuka's The Buddha in the Attic), DM me. I will buy you a copy.
Book banning continues. Julie Otsuka’s novel “When the Emperor Was Divine” has been banned for 10th grade English classes in a school district in Wisconsin. Undisputed historical fact: The American government imprisoned Japanese Americans during WWII.
We're excited to announce the new

When I first moved to Boston I was obsessed with making writing friends. Grateful to
@NathanBransford
for letting me talk about the things I learned and to
@GrubWriters
for being the source of about 80% of my writing friendships outside of college & grad school.
I always feel weird posting stories like this, bc at heart I'm an insecure mess. So, tbh, yes, I was happy about this yesterday, but the real victory was after weeks of nonstop panic attacks about where my writing is going and no sleep, I managed to sleep through the night.

super super excited to be recording my audio book in a couple weeks!
they just asked me for a list of words i need help pronouncing. i thought i was fine. then i found "salpingectomy" in my text. 😱😱😱😱😱
I've been posting and deleting and posting and deleting because of this. I don't really have any good answers. I'm sad. I'm scared. Writing is hard enough without all of us fighting each other.
@missashleyjean
Oh jeez. Totally credible. My dad went to an English medium boarding school when he was 9. When I started taking Hindi classes the teacher would yell at me for not knowing Hindi and tell me to ask my dad for help... Which ya know.
Boston! On Tuesday, February 27th at 7:00pm I’ll be celebrating the launch of THE CYCLE at

Can we stop asking people where they want to be in five years? Any reasonable person will have change in five years. Maybe instead: What are your values? What do you consider a wise investment of your time?
my kingdom for the wisdom to know when speaking up is advocating + adding clarity to the discourse & when it's just adding fuel to the flames + shit to the shitshow
me at 23 writing once a month: i'm an artist cartwheeling across the stars tasting nirvana, world hear me sing
me at 33 writing daily: i'm a plumber up to my elbows in crap, i apologize to everyone for everything
It's snowing and there's no where to go, so if you're a writer consider applying for

me: shy, anxious, doesn't like to nudge, fear of disturbing people etc
me on deadline: i have emailed you, called your office, your cell, found your last seven addresses, sent all of them letters via post and carrier pigeon, now trying a medium to reach you via the spirits
I wrote this story for my brilliant friend Kay. Much gratitude to
@christopherzara
for giving it a home and his magical edits, as well as the numerous psychiatrists who took the time to chat with me even though I could not quote them all.
"Where should psychiatry draw the line between disorder and normal human experience?" A moving story from

on the debate over grief and how we cope with loss
taking a break from the raging horror of what's going on and the resulting panic attack by reading tapir facts.
did you know tapirs have prehensile noses that can be used to pick up fruit?
1) The environment is your top priority
2) 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions
3) We have until 2030 to cut emissions to 0
4) If we don't, we will all die. You may survive longer because you are rich, but your employees and customers won't.
For me, the wound is this: I can't stop thinking about how this country has a history of taking things away from POC once they achieve a modicum of success, and how any mistake can and will be used against you to do this.
i walk around like 😍🤩 because i'm lucky enough to work on a book with
@leeerinoglesby
&
@rubenwrites
. (edit letter day is christmas. no joke.)
AND NOW I get to read
@rubenwrites
!! so so so happy for him! he makes my nonfiction sing and i cannot wait to read his fiction!
me: writing is so hard, why do writers waste so much time with infighting? we're living in a world dying by degrees where no one wants to read. let me log into twitter where i will lovingly agree with everyone and and spread peace.
twitter: let me make this impossible for you.
Nothing like working your gigs on Monday morning and getting these from the freelance expert herself! Thank you
@JoyBatra
! Editing your book made me rethink my career. Plus I learned so many giraffe facts! So excited for your book--it's going to help so many freelancers.
my mom: i conducted a survey
mom: i wanted to see if more people smile at me or your dad
mom: they smile more at your dad, i counted
PSA: if you see an elderly chinese lady walking around please smile at her, it might be my mom and she's counting

what's the best thing you've spent money on this year?
i'll go first: a hot yoga pass. i've worked out so many emotions on the mat while also getting toned enough to do a push-up. 10/10.
Publishing is not a zero sum game and there's plenty of room in the universe for your book. The idea that there's someone else out there taking your spot is not only wrong, it's pernicious. Grab that feeling by the root and yank it out with all your might.
Last week's Twitter discourse: I need to leave this godforsaken time suck that's riddled with trolls 😖
This week's Twitter discourse: this site has given me everything: friends, family, career, self actualization...❤
Going to be adding
@MauriceRuffin
to my list. Thank you for an incredible mentorship conversation! Am now inspired to write more and also run more. (How did you do that?!)
so excited that the
@TheAtlantic
is committed to telling the untold stories of history by writing about Black bodies.
@JenishaWatts
has editorial vision like no other. honored to be a small part of it, grateful to everyone who shared their stories.
realized since twitter started dying my account has mostly become fangirling over writing...which feels very on brand
the party is leaving town?
the ship is sinking?
the house is on fire?
i'm just gonna read some more.
My best friend has a history of being bullied by people she thought were friends. Her husband has a litigious ex wife. They fought over this story for three hours.
tech bro friend: so if the writing industry was a dude, he'd reply to texts a year later, then refuse to put a ring on it, and finally tell you he'd pay rent one day but never mean it.
tech bro: but you just tell yourself it's okay because you love him and you'll try harder.

If you want to feel loved ask a stranger for directions on the Baltimore light rail. The whole train will put together a plan to get you to your destination....including consulting with the driver despite her 'do not disturb' sign.
Maybe we all pursue our dreams with the confidence of the very nice young man who asked if I could write a weekly investing newsletter in return for 5% of his startup's revenues. Current revenue was 0, but he assured me I stood to make $100,000+.
The most successful person I know from high school sent me this story. Now we're going to start a rejection spreadsheet and after weeks of moping over a writing rejection my first thought is: dang I gotta apply for more stuff and get some more rejections!
For a year I’ve been part of a group that logs, shares and celebrates rejections. For
@TheAtlantic
, I tracked down the creators of the OG “rejection collection” and tried to understand why this simple system has changed how I others experience rejection
what's the normal recovery process after turning in a manuscript? i have turned into a slug and am alarmed. is this normal? how long will this last? best recovery suggestions? send help, i need it.
Literally just finished reading The Fountainhead only to stumble across this and laugh so so hard.
"Rudolph laughed.
He laughed at the outdated traditions, the belief that the greatest achievement in any reindeer’s life was to serve Santa’s whims. Why?"
anyone who thinks romance novels have unrealistic plots should know that my partner & I lived across the street from each other in mirror-image apartments, but it took an old roommate of mine to become a new roommate of hers for us to meet. We’ve been together for 20 years.
only my dad would insist it's possible to pack the following in a carry on:
--4 full-length outfits for an Indian wedding
--modest clothes for 100 degree weather
--clothes for mountain trekking in 70 degree weather
thoughts, prayers and tips appreciated
Lately I’ve been in a lot of meetings where corporate leaders are asking how to figure out their top priorities given a packed agenda. The environment? Diversity?
Given the UN report on climate change, here is my answer:
children's authors: and then they saved the world and everyone lived happily ever after without trauma from saving the world
roald dahl: and then i got turned into a mouse and stayed a mouse but tbh that's better b/c that way i won't live long enough to see my beloved grandma die
me interviewing: relax, it's just a conversation, don't worry about talking points or getting the q's in advance, super casual, nothing to worry about
me getting interviewed: i'm gonna need every last detail so i can write a script, also tell me how to accessorize my outfit
Congrats to Dr.
@meghana_ir
who defended today & not only did a ton of amazing work on glaciers but also on equity in science. Super super proud of you!
Much love to the
@metra
conductor who CALLED my train and made them wait so I could transfer when I discovered I was on the wrong train. Thank you, thank you.
The only thing that has made me happy this past week is
@stephanmlee
's K-Pop Confidential & K-Pop Revolution. If you're looking for a smart, zippy YA full of heart, run, don't walk to get them. So So SO good.
And now I'm listening to Boombayah on repeat.
This
@guardian
story is infuriating. I used to think my painful periods were an anomaly. Recently, people have been telling me their stories. So many of us are in pain every month and expected to suffer in silence. It's not acceptable.
Why are 23 yr old influencers telling me to be patient because everything is going to be ok? What have I done to upset the algorithm gods? All I want is panda videos.
