A new issue of our 'zine, Between the Scanlines, has rolled out to digital shelves and kind Patreon supporters.
This time around, we've cast our eye over Amiga raytracing, Artdink on PSX, and

waxes nostalgic about a Polish PC mag.
There's a landmark anniversary today, peerless in its importance. Never has gaming been so changed by a single game before.
I am, of course, referring to the 25th anniversary of the release of PEPSIMAN!
Happy birthday, you strangely fun little thing.
Gunstar Heroes on the OG PlayStation? Pretty much! A Japanese and European exclusive run-and-gun that reportedly missed out on an NA release due to SCEA's policy of no 2D games.
🕹️: Gunners Heaven/Rapid Reload, 1995.
Akihabara, 1993. In this amazingly clear footage from the time, we see a whole mess of cool stuff from salarymen playing Super Scope to the latest in palmtop technology. I'll link the full video below.

G-Police is already an awesome game, but y'know what makes it even more amazing? Its own Peter Chung (of Aeon Flux fame) directed animated commercial.
Just look at the proud Psygnosis owl at the start. 🔥

🕹️ Sharka's Bytes of Gaming History ⏳
Now this... Now this was the dream way to play Steel Battalion. Snapped in November of 2002, a tower of gaming power and a great big whopping TV (rear projection?) to see ALL the action.
"We've got the cars, we've got the locations, and I'm bringing the music. I'm Stryker on Crash FM."
Burnout 3: Takedown 🔥🔥🔥
Any fans of this and the Burnout series?
Shibuya, Tokyo, 7:02am in the Year 2000. Ready to roll out in one of the finest Sega Dreamcast games and one of my overall continuing racers.

If there was one arcade machine that was a dream of a teen Sharka to have a go at, it was this. The mighty (and costly!) SEGA R360, introduced in Japan in 1990 before making its way overseas a year later. 🔥🔥🔥
Just had a play of the Wipeout Phantom Edition source port to PC.
Really impressive stuff and I like how it still retains the look and feel of PSX Wipeout - just enhanced! There's even a crunchy 320x240 mode if you want it.

"Streets of Rage II... A bit like a scrolling version of Street Fighter II."
Streets of Rage II was up for review scrutiny on Bad Influence in January 1993. Did it Go Straight to top marks from both the boys and the girls? Let's find out!
Happy 20th anniversary, Metroid: Zero Mission!
Born from a desire by Yoshio Sakamoto of Super Metroid fame to introduce the original

to those who had only played Fusion, Zero Mission turned out to be a masterful remake. 💜
Have you played Zero Mission?

Don't mind me, just connecting to the Sega Channel. 😁
This would have been amazing to experience at the time. And it's wonderful peeps are working to restore bits of it in an offline form and add in the games that you would have downloaded at the time.
In 1990, Nintendo asked you nicely to *puh-leeze* tell your parents and other family members to stop calling everything with a controller and you plugged into a TV a Nintendo, just like they'd talked about 'Atari's'.
Mario thanks you for your compliance, citizen.
Retro Perspective: It's 1994 and you're at the local arcade with friends. A SEGA Afterburner II upgrade cab catches your eye and so you decide to impress everyone with your piloting skills - nor not!
Someone's first digital camera photo in 1998. Not too late a year for a woodgrain TV! N64 + PS1? Very nice.
Given the date and Ocarina is on the screen and was released in Nov of '98, could have been a Christmas pressie.
Just how Nintendo Software Technology (assisted by Namco) managed to cram a Ridge game that looks and sounds this good into a 32MB cart is a question for the ages.
Quickly now! You have time to reach out and grab one game before they're all devoured by a hungry (but cute!) shark
Which one do you reach for?

version seen here, and it's just as satisfying as ever to sculpt the world and see your little peeps spread out - and unleash your divine wrath.
Populous fans, raise your hand! What did you play it on?

ROMhacking effectively shutting down in all but read-only is a tragedy for new hacks now wondering where to go, but it's absolutely crucial to read Gideon's and thread alongside the official site statement.
In September 1993, both old and new 'luxury consoles' (as Bad Influence termed them) were showcased in one episode, things that seemed exotic and wonderous to Amiga-owning Sasha with no experience yet of a console outside of an Atari 2600.
November 14th, 1997. The day that Final Fantasy VII FINALLY releases in the UK.
And after making it late home from a friend's birthday bash, one young JRPG fan sits herself down and fires up her PlayStation, watching wide-eyed as the iconic intro plays for the very first time.
Another glimpse of a Toys R Us past. It may be 1999 or 2000, but that doesn't mean you can't still sell SNES games!
This is a pretty hefty selection. Some heavy-hitters there if you zoom in a bit.

Always a dicey prospect to click this when I see it trending in the UK. Heartening tho to see so many trans allies and cis women of all ages coming out in support. Thank you all. ❤️

Ahh, I promised another PS1-themed Retro Perspective today and here it is!
You've had to wait until Christmas of 1995 to get your hands on Sony's new PlayStation. Practically shaking with excitement, you fire up the game you've wanted to play ever since you saw it on TV...
The sprawling landscapes of Terracon, one of the coolest and most technically impressive Europe exclusive PSX games.
All at a mostly smooth 50fps and with scarcely any polygon wobble in sight.
On the first demo disc for PlayStation, Demo Demo Volume 1, there's a demo for Ridge Racer that feels like a slightly wonky prototype (which it likely is!) with handling that feels different, missing engine sounds, and some different impact ones.
Pretty neat stuff!
All in a day's work as a 90s cycle courier in the surprisingly busy open-map city two years before Driver.

Good morning! And happy 25th Birthday, Final Fantasy 8/VIII! Released today in Japan in 1999. 🎉
One of the more divisive entries? I didn't enjoy it as much at the time as FFVII, though I vividly remember my jaw dropping at the waltz scene.
How do you feel about FF8, peeps?
And this is only the tip of the iceburg with NikaSharkeh. They're in full support of the anti-LGBT laws in Russia and anti-Pride. Going so far as to commission artwork of their male OC 'showing what Pride is REALLY all about'.
Shivers. I vividly remember my parents excitedly calling me down to see ANOTHER WORLD's intro in late '92; we'd never seen anything like it before.
💾 Amiga version, running on A600.
The stunning cover from the August '96 issue of Japanese PS1 magazine, The PlayStation. You'll notice a conspicuous absence in the character lineup; where's Tifa?
Tifa as a main cast and party member was actually added late in development...
