Really excited to try and establish a junior park run here in the South West of the city. Be sure to register your interest. Hailes Quarry Park is an ideal size for this 🏃♂️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏃♂️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏃🏻♀️🏃♂️
We are working with
@SW20Ed
to establish the level of interest in a local junior parkrun. A Junior parkrun, for children 4-14 (plus supporting adults), takes place every Sunday morning & is 2km in length (with potential for a shorter lap). More here👇👇
Cities all over the world are creating safer, more liveable streets:
🏴🇬🇧Glasgow: bike network
🇧🇪Brussels: 🚗 free centre
🇫🇷Paris: 🚗 light centre
🏴🇬🇧Cambridge: car reduction
🏴🇬🇧Oxford: Parking Levy, LEZ
🏴🇬🇧 Nottingham: parking levy
🇫🇷 Bordeaux: 20mph car free
🧵👇
One of these has been is being stored on public land for free and without notice.
The other required a Traffic Regulation Order, the requisite consultation, months of notice and council resources.
Since opening 10 years ago, Edinburgh Trams have made a net loss of £44 million.
Coming in at more than £400m over budget and three years late, the capital’s trams have not run a profit since 2017.
Services cannot continue to run at a loss - despite what Cllr Arthur believes!
More please. Filters in have existed in
#Edinburgh
in various guises - for decades.
Calming streets, making them safer and quieter, yet not stopping driving to a single home or preventing any delivery.

“I need to get where I’m going and I should be able to”
Great video on the impact of pavement parking.
See the next tweet for the local impact on Edinburgh and what you can do to help (1/3).
Best seat on the bus.
Strange how so many shops that aren’t even open on a Sunday morning at 10:15 ‘rely’ on this Sunday only parking, for which a 24/7 bike lane was sacrificed.
🤨

In Dundee, rain gardens are doing their job in a very wet May/June (possibly the wettest on record).
In
#Edinburgh
people just shout:

stormwater management in action in Dundee yesterday. Drains were still doing their stuff but these raingardens were taking runoff from the road & pavement, reducing pressure on the drains, no puddles on pavement & protecting pedestrians from car splash.🌧️👍
🤔 “There’s not enough space on our roads for bigger pavements or cycle lanes”
Nature shows how much unnecessary space we choose to devote to cars.

South Bridge this afternoon. The Spaces for People pavement extensions need to be reinstated if not permanently then at least for high summer. South Bridge and George IV Bridge has become a no go zone for the disabled/wee bairns in push chairs etc. 1/2
This could be
#LanarkRoad
Comiston Road, Craiglockhart, Fairmilehead or any number of wide SW Edinburgh roads.
Time to treat them as streets, not roads? Credit
@InfraCGI
Edinburgh prioritises vehicles over people consistently and this is the result.
No other historic European city would allow this mix of vehicles and pedestrians at any time, never mind one hosting a festival of this scale.
Zero leadership.
This is the Metro and Tram map for Lyon (population 500k).
This week
#Edinburgh
(population 514k) debated whether or not to trial bus lane times being extended for one bus route.
A parking fine in 1999 Edinburgh cost £60, today it costs… £60.
If it had increased in real terms with other prices it would be £91, but in real terms it’s 35% cheaper!
Time to play catch-up?
One of these can be left in almost any
#Edinburgh
neighbourhood.
The other requires a consultation, a traffic order and years of lobbying before it can be put anywhere.
#motornormativity
😂
There will be, again, much debate, about
#LanarkRoad
.
Let’s be clear:
If
#Edinburgh
’s Cllrs think an outdated 1970s designed wide road - not street - with hatchings & refuges that enable fast traffic & car dominance is worth voting for, then we might struggle with Net Zero…🌎
Just a few weeks ago, councillors in
#Edinburgh
voted to have more vehicles on residential streets by removing the
@blackfordsafer1
on the Braid Estate - possibly 4000 more a day.
Are these the types of vehicles we want rat running through residential streets?
Modal filters, also known as LTNs, reduce the risk of death and serious injury by 50% – including for drivers. The safety of people has always been at the heart of Blackford Safe Routes and we were reminded of how dangerous Edinburgh’s roads are last week

Pedestrian refuges: a triumph of traffic engineering over people.
They are an admission that a street is too wide and traffic too fast for people to cross.
This is on a route to schools, a bus stop, a library, a playpark and a Primary School.

Las Shamblas to get bollards!
Cllrs have admitted that
#Edinburgh
’s
#LeithWalk
will need bollards.
@WorldBollard
“We’ll simply spend years fixing pavements and cleaning up accidents if we don’t” said Transport Convenor
@CllrScottArthur
They’ll be delivered by 1 April 2024.
Don’t let anyone tell you there isn’t any space available for bike lanes or wider pavements in Edinburgh.
Tighter carriageways also make 20mph limits more effective.
Much to digest in these plans launched today by Edinburgh Council, including proposed:
🚌 🚶🚲 Enhanced priority for public and active travel across the city
🚶🚶♀️👩🦽Much greater pedestrian priority in the city centre
🚋 A new tram route
New

bin hub: “This is a conservation area and they are going to ruin the views for everyone passing through our village”
The street is already full of metal boxes (vehicles and existing bins)?
Is this peak car blindness and

?
🇳🇱 This Amsterdam street is designed so that users have to cycle on the left.
🇬🇧 Or, it’s actually proof that if you build a well designed, safe cycle network, not just one lane, it works in the UK. (It’s London btw)
#Edinburgh
can do this too.
First working day of 2024: Edinburgh Council putting these notices on cars parked on pavements in SW Edinburgh today 📸👇…
…plus announcing 29 January as date of enforcement for
#pavementParking
, parking at dropped kerbs and double parking.
We will begin enforcing against parking on pavements, parking at dropped kerbs and double parking from 𝟮𝟵 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆. Find out more about the new rules, which will help make our streets more welcoming for everyone 👉
Last week: “complaints that the tram is subsidized and didn’t make a profits, due to its high capital cost”
This week: “please spend our limited capital on another road scheme that won’t generate ANY revenue for the public purse and will funnel more traffic into Edinburgh” 😡🤦♂️
Each time an
#Edinburgh
street is “reopened” fully to private cars, despite journeys over months or years having adapted to closures, the 30% traffic reduction target gets harder to hit.
Each local problem builds up to a bigger picture.
Here’s some examples:
First New Town Design:
A missed opportunity to create spaces with greenery and much wider pavements where cars are guests - like every other major European capital?
Where are the trees, bollards, seats and sustainable drainage?
Lessons not being learned fast enough. 🧵
Consultation launched by CEC for the second phase of the George Street & First New Town Design Project, covering North Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street (North) - running until 8th February 2024:
“Fully reopens”
No European city with Edinburgh’s climate targets would be contemplating reopening North Bridge without widening pavements, prioritising public transport and building safe space for bikes.
It’s earmarked for trams in future - it should be bus gated.
I’m confident that when North Bridge fully reopens at the completion of this project we’ll have a beautiful historic bridge that will help keep Edinburgh moving into the future.
The Pedestrians Association was the former name of
@LivingStreetsEd
and in 1995 the organised this!
Looking forward them organising to gangs of pedestrians to enforce Edinburgh’s new

ban that’s coming into force in December this year…!
An
#Edinburgh
Council report shows the city could raise c£100m over ten years with a Workplace Parking Levy.
It aligns with the
#CityMobilityPlan
, NetZero & 30% car mile reduction targets.
£100m funding & achieves goals - surely a no-brainer then?

Edinburgh needs to do the same to tackle
#CarBloat
- targeting emissions, pedestrian safety and impact on public space.
It’s already done partially for permits (not enough to cover the full impact though), but it’s needed for parking charges too.
We’re 42 years behind.
Success isn’t everyone driving and having somewhere public to store a car.
It’s having a mixed, sustainable options and better, greener, happier places to live.
Well, would you believe it. Academic study into
#Edinburgh
20mph shows a significant reduction in crashes and casualties.
So let’s extend it to the whole city.
A simple message: 20mph saves lives.
Fascinating and very thorough study into three years of 20mph zones in Edinburgh, which concludes they "significantly" reduce the number of crashes and casualties. Something of a rebuff for those who argue they are pointless. Full BMJ paper in link.
A vision of the future
#edinburgh
?
Huge volume of rain and hail caused drain covers to burst, rubble and branches to be swept down hill.
Our infrastructure just isn’t designed to cope with the scale and frequency of these rainfall events - welcome to a changing climate.

There’s a
@metoffice
yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in place from 11am today until late this evening ⚠️
Plan ahead and keep up to date with the latest forecast here:
Every day approximately 7,650 pupils at Edinburgh’s Independent Schools are driven some of the way to school.
Despite being only 20% of the total pupils educated in Edinburgh - they form 53% of the kids driven to school in
#Edinburgh
They are a huge part of city traffic.

Another piece of evidence that Oxford’s private schools are the main cause of school run traffic. Huge thanks to
@DrEliseUK
for the analysis. A thread.
What you’re seeing here is the speed of cars, each line is a day. The orange lines are the first week in Jan this year (1/9)
One of these attracts significant tax breaks, is used for unnecessary short trips in the city and the only time it’s used off-road is on the pavement.
The other is the free to hire
@SW20Ed
eCargobike.
Rather than choosing which additional streets to reduce to 20mph, should we ask our
#Edinburgh
councillors to justify why any exceptions should be greater than 20mph?

“Everybody drives right?”
Actually, mostly folk walk to the local shops. Like the data for Roseburn & Haymarket says - c90% don’t drive.
Business owners often do though. So, it’s common for businesses the world over to over estimate how many of their customers drive too.
Half of business owners on this Toronto street estimated that more than 25% of their customers arrived by car. In fact, it was 4%. And the % for those who walked or cycled? 72%. Retailers routinely overestimate the # of “car customers.” Via
@carltonreid
“How are we supposed to get into town?”
Bus. Tram. Train. Park & Ride. Coach. Cycle. Taxi. Walk.
Like the c40% of Edinburgh households that don’t have access to a vehicle and many households that do but don’t drive into town.
Leaving space for those that don’t have any option.
The is St James Square - next week the Transport & Environment Committee will be asked to permit coaches and taxis to enter this space.
I think that would be a mistake, particularly when vehicle access to the W Hotel is provided via the car park.
20 minute neighbourhoods need great public transport.
Buses in Edinburgh can often be delayed by cars parked in bus lanes.
But our recent freedom of information request showed that none of the 700+

In Porto the main bridge was choking the city centre with traffic, so in 2005 they shifted the road lanes out and converted it to pedestrians and light rail only… and it now carries thousands more people across the river each day than it used to as a highway.
Compared to Edinburgh City Centre West East Link (CCWEL):

“Everyone in Edinburgh drives, right?”
Earlier this week we published some local SW

We were asked about other parts of the city… so here’s the data!

🚌 Aberdeen introduces bus gates in the city centre - results in up to 25% reduction in bus journey times through the city centre, with better reliability.
With the efficiency savings, the operators then give free bus travel at weekends in January.

Just hop on board every Saturday and Sunday throughout January - no tickets or codes required!
Plan your weekend:
Wester Hailes Station is an interesting case study of how not to do transport for a community:
Infrequent service (could/should be metro)
Very poor surrounding land use strategy
Ticketing not integrated within the city
Similar issues at Curriehill, Kingsknowe and Slateford
Pedestrian refuges: a triumph of traffic engineering over people.
An admission that a street is too wide & traffic too fast for people to cross.
Where pedestrians cower lest they delay a car.
This is on a route to schools, a bus stop, a library & a playpark.

Winchburgh. Prestonpans. West Town.
#Edinburgh
will need all the tools in its armoury if it doesn’t want to be swamped🚗🚗💨💨
New trams, congestion charge, a proper circulation plan, bigger LEZ, workplace parking levy, LTNs,

bans, controlled parking zones
The village set to become Scotland's new ‘car’ commuter community as Winchburgh gets a motorway split road to push more traffic onto M9 / Edinburgh bypass.

Strange times: as
@EdinburghTories
Cllrs express concerns about floating bus stops in Leith Walk….
….while in Morningside they are fighting to keep this one.
Society was also ‘divided’ on:
🚭smoking ban
🚙 seat belts
🥃 breathalysers
💰minimum wage
🍷 minimum alcohol pricing
Predictions of ‘disaster’ for business didn’t materialise. Lives have been saved or improved. Folk got used to it.
