Scottish Green Councillor, Leith Walk, City of Edinburgh. Feminist, activist, trade unionist, poet, shoe aficionado. Alleged by young Tories to be impudent.
We formed a human shield at the London Road crossing where drivers continue to ignore road signs & plough through pedestrians crossing on the green man. Most drivers stopped. Hatchback man was so ragin’ mad he decided to use his car as a weapon. Thanks all who put a shift in!
I’m really concerned about reports that Portobello Swim Centre is threatened with closure due to SNP cuts.
I’ll be fighting with local councillor Jane Meagher to keep it open and save it for the local community.
Been on a litterpick, walking up the Walk and this guy mounted the pavement driving right at us and stopped right outside the Co-op and wait for his passenger to shop. He was genuinely surprised that we were irked and doesn’t think his behaviour was dangerous or reckless at all!
Today I asked a business on the Walk notorious for blocking pavements/cycle paths if they’d given consideration to alternative delivery methods.
The answer was no because
1) Logistics of deliveries not their responsibility (?) and 2) ‘we were here before the cycle path’. Sigh.

Darn this man really is an impressively bloke. Neil Lennon on the blight of depression & its increasing growth in traditionally macho sports. Help is there and can change your life.

It’s astonishing that so many STL landlords are ‘experts’ in housing policy, UN conventions, regulatory law, Discrimination law, protected characteristics, the GDPA, human rights legislation, economics, history, culture and Scots law - but can’t fill in a simple application form.
Home from work after 10 last night to be faced with an entire row of cars ALL parked on the pavement. Now the first van may be ‘chilled’ but the driver was not. Ooooft the abuse! Oh and wanted me arrested. Cos law? That pavement is so shattered it’s a hazard itself now.
On the day that the new legislation on Short Term Lets comes into effect, I happened to run into the wonderful
@LivingRent_Edi
outside City Chambers! 🙏👏✊
So this is just a regular occurrence here now which is why I’m pushing for bollards as a priority at Pilrig Junction. What with this and the bus stop it’s all a bit of a ‘mare for pedestrians, anyone relying on public transport and cyclists.
‘all this blood on your hands’?
It’s a requirement to complete a form to licence your business. There is no blood involved unless you’ve stabbed yourself with a pen.
We live in a country which happens to contain enviable spectacular landscapes, stunning coastal villages, ancient paths, busy cities & has a unique heritage.
It has a lot to offer tourists.
But first & foremost it’s our HOME.
Not primarily a ‘tourist destination’.
Respect that.
We live in a tourist destination, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It’s a country on people’s bucket lists.
A member of our government is seriously suggesting CAMPING as the option when 1000s of self catering are lost. It beggars belief. What has happened to
Finally months of stress & worry are over for Edinburgh’s dancers. A Judicial Review decreed the previous Nil Cap decision ‘erroneous’ & overturned it.

to stop normalising far right rhetoric ⚡️
This weekend our block folk were faced with aghast parents dropping their offspring off at Unite Student acc in Middlefield. The outrage that they couldn’t park directly outside & had to wheel/carry belongings was audible & one irate dad nipped ‘you have no consideration for us!’
Please learn how our electoral system works. If you insist on inserting yourself constantly into the political narrative, have the grace to understand our democratic process.
MSPs elected under the AMS (D’Hondt system) ARE elected. Messrs Jefferson/D’Hondt I salute you.

This line didn’t work out too well for Nicola Sturgeon, so it’s quite the bold move for
@patrickharvie
, an unelected legislator who already has a widespread reputation for misogyny.
From TOMORROW enforcement of the new parking rules kicks off. £100 fines will be issued for illegal parking - now including parking on pavements.
We’ve waited a long time for this.
Can’t wait to see pavements that are car-free.
Are you parked on a pavement, at a crossing point or double parked? We begin enforcing the new parking rules tomorrow and will issue £100 fines to anyone parking illegally or blocking access to the road for other vehicles. Got questions? Answers at

Following the Leader of the Council’s bizarre attempt to delay the STL Licencing scheme (Radio Scotland yesterday)
@CllrChasBooth
& I wrote to him urging clarification.
Further delays are not in the interests of the citizens of Edinburgh struggling in a severe housing crisis.
Together with my Green colleague
@susan4leithwalk
I wrote to
@cllrcammyday
last night urging him to issue an urgent media clarification of the council’s position on the October STL deadline.
The council does not support any further extension. Cllr Day should clarify that.
What an absolutely appalling headline
@edinburghpaper
This attitude is part of the problem on our roads. Shame on you.
Portobello High Street: All the travel disruption after ‘serious collision’ involving cyclist and lorry
Many STL campaigners have complained about the ‘toxic’ tone of the debate whilst simultaneously abusing anyone who disagrees with them - then this!
The repugnant ‘Pogrom’ reference, actively boasting of capitalising on Right-to-Buy.
Your words created the toxicity.
Just Stop.
NEW: I spoke to STL owners, holiday letting agents & others affected by new licensing laws coming next month
One said regulations amounted to a 'pogrom' of the sector
This typically refers to massacre of Jews, will be found deeply offensive & I imagine doesn't help the campaign
Horrifying stat from Reddit - on the SNP's new tax bands, if you went to Uni in England and then get a job in Scotland earning over £100,000, your marginal top rate of tax is 78.5%
For postgrads that goes up to 84.5%
When 'hard graft' equates to 'parking' your works van on any pavement, cycle path, junction or space that is not for vehicles because it's convenient for you, at the expense of pedestrians, cyclists, wheelers and pram users.
That's grift, not graft.

This tweet, part of a thread on the loss of a Royal Mile Self Catering apartment due to new regs, highlights exactly what brought our housing supply to crisis point.
It doesn’t matter how creative you are, this is greed masquerading as ‘business savvy’.
I very politely asked these ‘gents’ to remove the vehicle explaining I’m a local councillor who is acting after a lot of complaints. They refused on the grounds that I am not a Tory Councillor as they only move for Tories?
Bereft of those in Leith so Leith Police it is then.
It’s your coalition Councillor.
Not SNP/Green - SNP/Labour.
Why do you insist on maintaining the charade that somehow, even though you’re part of the coalition that’s been running the city for five years, you are exempt from the arrangement?
It is shameful to see this in Edinburgh in 2022.
The Council response - "this was brought to our attention yesterday and is due to be actioned tomorrow."
Cuts don't work. Edinburgh needs Councillors that will oppose SNP/Green cuts.

The importance of our membership cannot be overstated. It is the membership who decide on whether Bute House stands. A leadership complicit in multiple breaches of both the agreement and our trust must justify the now unjustifiable to all of our members.
Ultimately Scottish Green members decide if MSPs are in Government.
With the Council Tax Freeze, Climate Targets scrapped, & MSPs who run rampant with Transphobia, the SNP have shown alot of contempt in the past year.
I think its time for members to have a say on the BHA again.

So sorry we couldn’t carry the vote in the face of a morally indignant self-righteous Labour/Tory ‘alliance’.
A blatant display of prejudice against mainly working class women, many highly educated (ooh scary) with the nerve to organise to ensure their own safety & job security.
Had a helper on the Colonies leaflet run. Can stuff leaflets through doors, identify all the plants & speaks to every animal we meet! Feeding her strawberries & cream Frappuccino now.

Crossing London Rd/Leith Walk NO LEFT TURN
@CllrScottArthur
@edtiss
, on Green Man - a bunch of smiley motorcyclists roar in & a hysterical driver screaming ‘woohoo’ out his car window ignoring signs, protests & pedestrians. This indicates it’s being done FOR FUN. Enough please.
Reader, I did not let sleeping workmen lie. I banged on his windae, woke him up and asked him to move off the damned pavement. This is all making me very tetchy now!
#leithwalkparking
Ever looked at a dinged car & thought ‘Oooh, wonder how that happened!’ Well there’s a hella dent in this Beamer, but given he’s blocking a junction, cycle path & a crossing am guessing he’s as appalling at driving as he is at parking? Or maybe just got rammed by a robust buggy
‘Traitorous’ is a terribly melodramatic way to describe spending money on actual education and not pictures of a man in medals.
Rude and traitorous if King’s portrait not displayed in capital - Susan Dalgety
@TorstenB74
@CycleSad
That is exactly what I thought. Imagine if we all just meandered about the road holding up buses & trams & cars yelling ‘but mate we had legs first’. 😂😂😂
Finally got to see my mum. She still hasn’t quite got the hang of the whole ‘just push the button!’ thing but did have the biggest fit of giggles. We’ve waited a long time for hugs & giggles.
In spite of multiple - yes multiple - options for parking, this bloke persists in driving up the newly laid pavement & parking as close to the damned door of the shop as possible.
The paving stones will be completely wrecked again.
@cocteautriplets
It’s very frustrating Andy. Nice to have a lot of random folk come up and share their concerns and offer a bit of solidarity though. But the drivers? Oh my days the drivers.

Thanks to all involved for making this so special.
‘Conspirators against Salmond’?
Did you abandon hoarding loo roll in favour of tinfoil for hats? You blatantly used the Salmond trial to feed your own bilious ego. Your ‘journalism’ lacks basic comprehension of the power dynamic & it’s role in facilitating harassment. We see you
Rape Crisis Scotland issued a joint statement by the 9 conspirators against Salmond.
All are powerful women in Scottish government circles.
One of them is DIRECTLY responsible for government funding Rape Crisis Scotland most of their income.
Media don't say that.
Who in the name of the Holy Freakin’ Parking Gods thought this article was a good idea? We have horrific parking issues in Leith Walk & Leith. Appalling.
It’s a nightmare. A nightmare with added tramworks. Please DO NOT attempt this lunacy.
Just when you think the tone cannot be lowered at an embarrassingly puerile FMQs with Douglas Ross & Sarwar being particularly infantile - along comes Cole-Hamilton.
You can always rely on a Liberal to lower event the lowest of tones.
Today's decision shows what can be done when a community organises and unites behind a common message. It shows the developers plans for Steads Place were completely out of step with community needs for housing, local businesses and retaining our heritage
#savedleithwalk
I’m horrified that what’s happening to Conor is happening all over the city, and the country. Meanwhile on TwitterX landlords debate exactly how much of a rent increase they can get away with.
#HousingCrisis
Rent of my flat has just been increased by 23%.
That's right. 23%.
Imagine this will be not too dissimilar across the rental sector following the end of the rent cap in Scotland.

Thanks so much to your lovely Hawick shop staff who dropped her phone & picked up the first aid kit as soon as I stotted in the door. I’d just had a nasty fall & went to ask for directions & she cleaned me up & made sure I was OK. 🙌💚🌟
Aw look at the lovely City Centre West to East Link at Haymarket! And all its lovely shiny BOLLARDS!
I’m sure that Leith Walk will get similar much needed safety measures installed soon. Right TEC committee?
Fantastic to see progress on the City Centre West to East Link at Haymarket. Most of the barriers have gone. See for yourself the result of work to make it safer and easier to walk, wheel + cycle in the area. On track to finish the full route early 2024.
This line bin, which just appeared bang in the middle of the pavement, is just one of the more flummoxing issues picked up today on a Leith Walk snagging tour. Why?
@davieboy1963
I have never understood why the Royal family immediately don kilts and tartan as soon as they cross the Border, as though all Scots are constantly draped in the stuff. Kilt wearing outside the military, pipe bands and weddings is not the norm. This is simply excruciating.
Delighted to announce I am on annual leave and am spending it with friends, family, three dogs and my lovely mum who I haven’t seen in months! Happy days.
Just to balance out the ‘luxury car entitlement’ here’s another appearance by that regular pavement & cycle path blocker the Big Silver Merc who eschews actual parking spaces for reasons known only to their entitled we self.
@leithsworstpark
So much 💚 for
@LivingRent_Edi
& their fierceness in fighting for our rights as tenants in all housing sectors. If you want homes, not holiday lets, or if you want better & more social housing & an end to dodgy landlords/practices join the tenants union.
On Saturday members dropped a banner on Victoria st, calling for homes not holiday lets!
Old Town is one of the most densely populated areas of STLs in the UK (29 per 100 residencies). And with 278 renters per 100 rentals in Edinburgh right now city is is need of change.
Apparently these bollards can magically leap out and wreck car wheels, and in no way are the drivers colliding with those bollards responsible.
A big bollard did it and ran away?
Thanks so much to the couple who intervened when I, 5ft woman, was chased down & bawled at by a 6ft 6 bloke who thought I’d taken photos of him & his mates having a BBQ in their garden to put on I ❤️ Leith.
Hate to break it to you son but the world doesn’t revolve around you.
And yet Edinburgh Councillors who rent their homes privately weren't even allowed to debate this and had to leave the Chamber?
Nope. This is just wrong.
Top news for car lovers! Audi now make a levitating model that floats over barriers. Because obviously driving down the pavement is getting on folks last nerves.
@leithsworstpark
Thanks Adam for the timely & welcome intervention. I strongly suspect the city might have woken to stealthily restored views & the run on sledgehammer sales will cease forthwith. 👏👏👏
This is public space & these are public views. Ticketed events cannot put up barriers which are to the detriment of the city.
I’ve asked officers to remove ASAP & for a guarantee that these won’t be erected for any future events.
I went to look at Elm Row. I have some things to do then am going home to watch something very violent on TV, pull a duvet over my head and will contemplate how to move forward with this bourach in the morning.

Those pesky double reds getting in the way of your desire to park wherever the hell you want to? Just park on the other side of them cos you have a massive car thus are entitled to screw over both road & pavement users!
