All 4 cities aim to combat climate change by introducing green infrastructure. Of the 4, only Edinburgh is attempting to achieve this without the single most effective tool for climate mitigation & adaptation in city centres - planting street trees.

In 2018 the public were consulted on a draft concept design which included small street trees. Questioned specifically, 76% of respondents were in favour of the introduction of street trees on George Street, with 56% of respondents 'strongly' in favour of the concept.

Another quick #GeorgeStreetTrees thread... Edinburgh is rightly proud of its green credentials, with more trees per head than any other UK city & regularly winning 'greenest' accolades. But there's one league table where it languishes at the bottom, and that's street trees.

This public response led to a pledge for 'further exploration' of reintroducing trees into the design. The result? Where are today. Still no trees, but that's not all. Even the shrubs proposed as (admittedly v poor) replacements for trees have now been removed as well.

For the record, the Cockburn Association and, in particular, Edinburgh World Heritage do some great work. However, there deserves to be some scrutiny of why the public & other project stakeholders views, and CEC's own climate commitments have been completely overridden.

What's most interesting is what he doesn't say. There's no mention anywhere of climate issues & the vital role street trees play in combating & adapting to climate change - removing CO2, attenuating heavy rains, moderating temperatures, providing shade & shelter.

But at over 100ft, George Street is the widest street in the New Town. With careful selection of tree species of an appropriate size & shape set within a sensitive & high quality landscape design, the current views along the street can still be preserved and indeed enhanced.

The result of this overwhelming public support? Street trees were totally removed from the next design. In their place were ornamental shrubs (Amelanchier lamarckii) in raised planters, with the improbable claim that they still provided adequate shelter, shade & biodiversity.

FWIW, neither organisation is contributing anything towards the £36m cost, while Sustrans who are providing the bulk of the funding are on record as supporting street trees for the project.
