, so here's a guide!
WTW is queer Appalachian horror set against the backwoods backdrop of motorcycles, methadone, and Mothman.
I don't usually get personal here, but the hurricane took out part of my family's home, trapped my grandparents on their farm with no power or service, and completely wiped off the map the town where I *just* got married. Please don't forget Appalachia when talking about Helene.
I just learned that a friend is writing a book in the exact same niche with the exact same twist as me and I literally just sent her all my research and resources. Similar books create readership and a rising tide. They are not your competition, they're your community!
Y'all, I recently worked on a query with a writer who had received 27 rejections and no requests. He just emailed me that he already has 3 requests and an R&R!?! Literally could not be more excited for him!
(This is not an ad, I only give free critiques + advice on principle!)
I checked this morning and realized finishing that draft meant I'd written 10 books!! Over the years my drafting has gotten so much cleaner and so much faster, so to celebrate I compiled my time-saving and sanity-saving tips for writing a book. (And please add your own too!) 🧵
Update: anyone can now use the form in my bio to request a free query critique! Tell your friends and consider sharing what you know for free! It's the best ways those of us who aren't publishing professionals can increase diversity and accessibility in our

Reintroductions, I hear?
Hey y'all, I'm Rowan! I'm working on some queer Appalachian horror and I'm about to go back home to the Appalachians to finish it at my writer's residency!
I write MG + YA and I'm mentoring in a couple programs this year :)
Here’s how it happened—I was alone, again, crunching through the woods in my black gown while the rest of the graduates celebrated with strip mall hibachi and cash-stuffed cards at the Golden Corral. Dad didn’t show, again, so I set off to find him on my own.

I see so many new faces, so let me reintroduce myself!
Hey y'all, I'm Rowan! I'm an NB Southern writer working hard on some queer Appalachian horror. (More about it in my bio!)
I'm a mentor for SmoochPit and WTMP this year and I do lots of critique and giveaways. Welcome :)
title: Ghosts of Evermore
genre: gothic fantasy
setting: fantasy - Castle Evermore by the Plutonian Sea in the country Nethermoore
theme song: The Lighthouse by Halsey
age range: young adult
comps: House of Salt and Sorrows x A Study in Drowning x Bridgerton

Southern inheritances are always dark—whether its a penchant for pills, a blood-soaked family farm, or an ancient magic. Sierra spurns them all, but when her dad disappears, she must chose which monsters to slay, and which to become.

The secret to not worrying while waiting on agents, or editors, or readers, or whoever, really is just thinking your next book is better than your last and putting your whole heart into it. ❤️🔥
I am not an enemies-to-lovers, rivals-to-lovers kind of guy. Give me friends-to-lovers. Roommates-to-lovers even. Obsessive-childhood-companions-to-lovers even better. There's something unbeatable about that strange transformation of one love to another <3
"I slipped on Mom’s fanciest dress and felt the silk smooth out the wrinkles of the day. Add a smudge of stolen makeup, and I didn’t look anything like myself. Which was perfect. I was going to a wedding, and I loved weddings.
Too bad I was never invited."

I've had some questions, so to clarify, there is truly no catch to the free critique. There is no way to pay me, nothing to subscribe to, and currently no books to buy. (I'm working on this one lol) This really is just old-fashioned community-building that I hope you'll pass on.

Oh, and hi to all my new followers! 👋 I'm Rowan, a queer, nb writer from SC. I have a medical day job and a middle grade Shakespeare retelling on sub right now! I'm still learning this whole X thing and I'm always looking for new writer friends :)
Hey, I know sometimes it looks like everyone is getting requests and offers, but the vast majority of people who sent me queries haven't received any. If you're still waiting for good news, just know you're in good company. (And maybe send your query and I'll see what I can do!)
@RoannaFlowers
Thank you! They're incredibly self-sufficient and last I heard managed to clear a route big enough for a golf cart or ATV to get through in case of emergency. My grandma's a wiz with a chainsaw :)
What resources helped you level up your writing or publishing craft? Story Genius changed the way I outline, Alexa Donne's videos taught me to query, and Turning To Story is helping me build a writing life that's fulfilling and productive. I'm looking for the next one now...
Would y'all be interested in a thread where I post a bunch of Twitter/X pitches that worked, explained their most successful elements, and showed how to implement them? (And would you let me use your pitches? 🥺)
I wrote five books, finished two of them, then applied to a dozen mentorship programs and hundreds of agents with no luck for years.
Then I wrote a book in a month, it immediately won a mentorship, and one month later I had multiple offers of rep!
It's all about persistence.
Okay, I'm not done thinking about this, so...
I really wish we’d talk less about authors finding success with their first books and more about authors finding success with later books. It’s honestly very common.
The discourse around this can be so misleading and discouraging…
Today's the day y'all. The book has been seen by thirty beta readers, edited by my agent, and rewritten about six times. I'm incredibly proud of how far it's come and confident in the craft.
So why am I still so nervous about sending it to my wife? 🥺
What's that one weird thing that ends up in everything you write without meaning to?
(Mine's an anti-chosen one arc where they reject the path for one reason or another🤷)
New faces mean new intros! Hey, I'm Rowan! I write MG and YA and spend a lot of time on here giving free advice and critique (more on that soon!)
I have a sweet MG Shakespeare retelling on sub now and I'm working to finish some queer Appalachian horror!
Thanks for being here!
Yeah, writing a main character that shares an identity with you is cool, but writing a *love interest* that shares your identitiy is, quite frankly, lifechanging
Thank you for 3K!! It has been lovely to get to know so many of you and to hear about your writing! Hopefully I'll get to read even more with this and future giveaways!
Even if you don't need critique today, feel free to introduce yourself and let me know what you're working on!
What's your YA hot take?
Mine is that saying "she swore" or "he made a rude gesture" puts too much distance between the reader and the narrator. Saying "flipped off" or "fuck" is better craft.
Alright, we're doing it. Send me your favorite pitches, your friends pitches, and your own pitches that worked.* I'll pick some and explain why!
I'm also toying with starting a little event just for writers to get their pitches critiqued.
#PitLearn
perhaps? What do you think?
Would y'all be interested in a thread where I post a bunch of Twitter/X pitches that worked, explained their most successful elements, and showed how to implement them? (And would you let me use your pitches? 🥺)
I'm having an all around negative writing day, so drop your pitch/moodboard/description/hook for your story and I'll point out its genuine strengths and tell you everything I love about the project. (And maybe you could return the favor for the other writers in the comments?)
That reply got bigger than I expected and I have folks coming in unsure, so I'll say it again--I'm happy to critique queries! No charge, just honest feedback and the belief that you shouldn't have to pay to publish but you should always pay it forward to your community.
Reminder that sorting by "latest" in events like
#UnhingedPit
is a great way to meet people and bring newer and lower-followed writers into our

circles!
I know I literally just did a 1K giveaway, but I hit 2K (thank you!!) and I'm about to get busy with grad school, so I want to give back while I can! Retweet and drop your pitch for a chance to win a submission package or first three chapter critique! I'll choose 2 for 2K :)
I got my first ever offer of rep directly because of

Y'all, the main character going from struggling with the love interest's pronouns to angrily correcting the villain when they misgender them during the final showdown goes so hard.
Was this post inspired by the fact that my wife and I grew up around each other, got fake married with paper rings as kids, were voted both best gal pals and cutest couple as seniors, then got real married basically the second we could? No. So nobody tell her I wrote this.

My book is out with 30(!!!) amazing beta readers who have already helped so much! I have been exchanging stories and participating in workshops for many years, and I have some extra time while they edit, so I wanted to make a guide on how I get the most from my readers!
In Shakespeare, if a story doesn't end in a wedding, it's a tragedy. So what do those plays mean to queer theater kids in the days before the 🏳️🌈 Supreme Court decision?

I came to commercial fiction from the more highbrow literary world, and I take such incredible joy in learning mass appeal, and commercialism, and guilty pleasures, and all those delicious things. There's real skill involved and I think it's so short-sighted to put them down.

My Twelfth Night retelling about first crushes in the time of Obergafell v. Hodges, and Shakespeare plays being tragedies unless they end in marriage, and crashing weddings to feel closer to the untouchable idea of lasting queer love, is out in the world!

Hey, lurking writer friends--I never thought I'd be one to share my work online, but I decided to push myself with this book and has it been worth it in so many strange and amazing ways! If you're looking for your sign to share your work here, this is it :)
I know some people were unhappy they missed it last time, so this is my pre-announcement that I will be doing another query, submission package, or first pages critique when I hit 3K! Tell your friends!
@evakliiim
I'm not an agent, but I spend a lot of time reviewing people's queries for precisely this kind of thing. Feel free to send your sub package my way. (No charge, no catch, just old fashioned community building.)
Y'all, I am sitting in a graveyard at sunset because the little white church had the best views, and this thing came running at me from the woods, so I said "hey puppy, come here!" and it did not because it was fully a red fox and I would be the first one killed in a horror movie

Sierra Branham loves her family and dreads becoming them. She's determined not to inherit their backwards ways, blood soaked farm, or ancient Appalachian magic. But when her father disappears, that determination turns deadly.

After all the love for White Trash Witchcraft yesterday, I thought today might be a good day to announce I got a grant to finish it!
I'm heading back to the mountains where I grew up to write, and research, and potentially metamorphosize into an anthropomorphic moth.

As promised, here is my wordcount spreadsheet! It calculates daily words and graphs them against multiple wordcount goals with the option to take daily notes and plot your book against two of my favorite beat sheets!
Whenever I mention my timeline in writing, be that a day, a phase of the moon, or a time of the month, I write "TIMING". This allows me to Ctrl F it during the revision stages when I inevitably change things around, and I don't have to stop the flow of writing to check accuracy.
The time for White Trash Witchcraft is coming, y'all, I feel it. Yeah, it's got cold nights and dark woods, but it also has methadone clinics, and kudzu-covered trailer parks, and folk punk queers, and a magic just as dark as the systems of poverty and racism it was born of
Appalachian gothic, yes, but there’s gotta be some good old fashioned redneck fun to it or it falls a little flat for me. Toss a couple of beers back while the little white church is burning, you know?
I know we aren't really a video app, but a lot of my storytelling from my rural Appalachian residency makes the most sense in this format. Even my "what I eat in a day" videos ended up being so complex and cultural! (Also drop your @ if you wanna be video friends somewhere else!)
Why did I write a book where my characters know gun things, and motorcycle things, and drug things that I know nothing about. Getting this language right is harder than trying to learn enough about horses to write that brand of fantasy, and I swore I'd never do that again!
Does anyone else feel...bad after finishing a first draft? I had a rough time writing "the end" today and it was the same with my last book. I'm sure I'm supposed to feel proud or excited or something, but I guess that takes time?

Hey, if you offered to beta read my book and then ghosted me, we're good! Life gets in the way and I completely understand! I've gotten plenty of feedback and have no hard feelings :)
I'm writing a book in *real* Southern vernacular that rejects that old charicature you've seen everywhere, and I've realized that the vocabulary that voice often leaves out is the unique, longer words. I've only ever heard "veritable," and "perspicacious," back home.

They got some help and cleared a way that's big enough for a golf cart or ATV in case of emergency! They're both foresters and farmers and pretty self sufficient even in their eighties!
As far as Twitter/X pitches go, I've had agent likes across three books, editor and publisher likes across two, and an offer of rep on one! With

Oh my god, it feels like a book. Like, it's starting to feel like an actual book! I've literally done this ten times before, but this stage still makes me want to simultaneously scream and pass out.
For every book I keep a "Darlings Doc" where I paste the darlings that I cut from the book. That way, I can get back some words I lost if I decide I needed them, and I can go dumpster diving for language and metaphors whenever I'm stumped.
The fact that I've never seen most of the Southern vernacular I've included in my book written down is really making spell-checking tough. Curse our beautiful and bizarre oral tradition. (This post is brought to you specifically by jon boats and catbrier.)
My beta readers' favorite character by a long shot seemed to be the love interest of my story. So here's a little introduction to Blight--they're the best.

There's something really invigorating about beta reader comments that say "I liked this element, but I wanted it to be better." Like, yeah, you're right. It is cool enough to deserve more! It does merit that extra little push of revision.
I have a "Chapters" document where I keep a short summary of each chapter so that when I'm thinking, "damn, what chapter was it where they explore the abandoned mall?" I can refer to it quickly instead of endlessly scrolling.
