I messed up the video earlier - sorry., I'll try again! Last year
@Teacherglitter
inspired me to start a reading scrapbook with each of my kids. It's quite simply one of the best things we've ever done. We're now keen to get as many schools and parents doing these as possible...
A box of picture books ready for my Y6s to take home and read to their younger siblings at home. It always goes down a treat.👍
#readersaremadefromreaders
We all know a certain someone has announced his first graphic novel.
For a multitude of reasons, don't buy it.
There is a whole host of top quality graphic novels out there. I'll start off with one alternative, I'd love people to add their own.👍

Didn't want to believe the first one so did another, and then another. Now resigned to the fact our Christmas plans will be changing. Gutted for the girls but they're awesome and will take the news like champions and we'll still have a rocking time just the 4 of us.👍
A GN 🧵
This is the first year I've been armed to the teeth with GNs for my class. And WOW, what an impact they have made in terms of reading for pleasure.
Where I have sets or sequels, there has been a real momentum created, and the book chat and recommendations have...
Our Story in a Jar display has always looked nice, but it didn't really reflect our school community or our inclusive approach to reading. We spoke to the children about the books they'd like to see up there and new jars were created....
My latest blog - Walliams.
I read Demon Dentist.
A conversation with
@rumena_aktar
has highlighted there are more of his books with issues around classism and sexism, but this blog deals with another issue that I feel runs throughout this book.
When you've spent so many years not reading, there's lots of books to catch up on - too many!
I'd never read Holes, but now I have.
I can't stop smiling - it really is slice of genius.
Loved it.👍
Started a staff book club, each month we select a kid's book that champions inclusion, diversity or both. We buy the books ourselves then donate them to the class libraries. 13 people signed up.👍
Can't wait to get started
@annabellesami
Great service, as ever,
@ANewChapterBks
I always feel very lucky that I often have very successful
#CharityBookHauls
. The nicest thing is when I get to treat the kids in my class to a book each. These will be heading home with them over half term.👍
Current reads in my class.
And if you didn't know already, graphic novels are not just for reluctant readers (a term I have a big problem with anyway). They are devoured by readers of all ability.
#LetsTalkGraphicNovels
Child 1 is having a science themed birthday party today and requested a science cake so I attempted to recreate the one on the left. I feel that's not a bad effort .👍
Child 1 and I have just finished this.
It's a stunning book that every child should read by the end of primary school.
It's beautifully written, has moments of sadness amnd hope, and leaves you feeling ashamed and angry about what this country has done.
@BZephaniah
Self-indulgent 🧵 alert.
I've completely lost my reading mojo. For the past month I've hardly read anything.
Which is OK.
I keep buying books and my tbr pile is now ridiculous (isn't everyone's?), but reading has been really hard work.
I was getting annoyed with myself...
@GillianKeegan
@Conservatives
All you've done since you became the 6th Tory Education Secretary in the space of just over a year is write long tweets criticising Labour who haven't been in power since 2010. That's literally all you do.
You have achieved absolutely nothing.
You are absolutely useless.
My new favourite thing that I wish I'd done ages ago. Got all my picture books together and my Y5s take them home to read to their younger siblings. They absolutely love it.👍
#readersaremadefromreaders
Came across this in a charity shop today. It's stunning.
You're introduced to 20 children from around the world who describe their home to you. It's a wonderful way for children to learn more about the world but to think more about the place they live in too...
My class and I are loving this as our class read. The first time Billy stutters there were some giggles, which I expected. They soon stopped though, and then I showed them I Talk and the real discussion began. Now they all laugh with Billy, not at him.
#readingforempathy
This a book I've owned for a few years and never read. Then my daughter and I decided to read it as a bedtime read-along. We finished it tonight and I'm 100% convinced it is one of those children's books that is absolutely perfect in every way. It is an absolute masterpiece.
COMING AFTER EASTER...
#textsoftoday
An easy way to start booktalk and create reading links across schools.
Please have a look at the attached document and get involved.👍
Please share - if I've forgotten to tag you I apologise!!
Top 10 of the Year 🧵!
But this isn't mine, it's the current Y6s I taught in Y5 last year. They've carried on borrowing my books and I asked them to vote on their Top 3 books, I created a points system and now, based on those results - I have their Top 10 books for Y5 and Y6...
Gave this to Child 1 today to read, in preparation for this summer when I read to her the greatest children's book ever written*
*in my humble opinion.
And, yes, she loved it.
Edutwiter BS in particular, but the reading community here is a constant inspiration and comfort.
So thank you guys, I shall now finish Lightfall 2 and sleep well. Have a lovely end to your weekend.x
Thank you
@jonnybid
for the fantastic idea - here are my class reading journeys for the year. In groups they chose their favourite books they've read, as well as our class reads. I've never seen them so enthusiastic. These will be up on the wall to inspire my Y5s next year.👍
If you have a child in your class who doesn't read, then I bet you if you offer them a good choice of graphic novels and
@BarringtonStoke
books, that child will become a reader.
So my daughter leant her copy of The Last Bear to a friend. Accidents happen and water was spilt and the book ruined but not the end of the world. The dad has just turned up with a signed first edition copy to say sorry!
@HGold_author
Child 1 is beside herself!!
'It's about listening to what other people have to say about books to.'
My daughter has applied to be a Reading Ambassador and has written this. Proud Dad.👍
#LetsTalkGraphicNovels
What a delivery to come home to!! Thank you so much
@boltcity
- this has made mine and daughter's day!! If you haven't read Amulet yet, you must!! The series is a GN masterpiece.
#LetsTalkGraphicNovels
The layout is TERRIBLE because my IT skills are ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH (I'm working on it) but I have written my first blog! Have a read and let me know what you think.👍
The first one is called:
How my children got me reading again and why I regret it.
Stealing an idea from
@jonnybid
. At lunchtime today I left out a selection of books outside my office, each with a post it on, a name of a child and why I thought they'd like it. At the end of the day they were all gone and I cannot wait for the conversations tomorrow.👍
97 pages of perfection from
@katyabalen
and another masterclass from
@BarringtonStoke
in showing troubled youngsters putting themselves back together. I loved the link between music and the natural world. Wonderful stuff.👍
I could look through our reading scrapbooks from last year all day long. They're wonderful.
New batch on order and can't wait to see what the kids come up with this year!
#lovereadingscrapbooks
Right. School is brutal, Gavin's a plonker so I need cheering up. Top 6 Chapter books you've read this year, in no particular order:
Pop!
A Kind of Spark
Twitch
Amari and the Night Brothers
The Last Bear
Front Desk
Picture books tomorrow.👍
Another Tony Hart fact:
He refused to let production team use 'quality' to determine whether a kid's art made it into the gallery. It should just be a straight selection of the mail bag.
He felt sending art in was an act of bravery for kids and that alone made it gallery-worthy
6 Y4 boys have just come to see me. They've started a book club.
Boy 1: I'm the designer
Boy 2: I'm the illustrator and producer
Boy 3: I'm the writer
Boy 4: I'm a writer as well
Boy 5: I'm doing the website
Boy 6: I'm the ideas guy
Absolutely made my day.😂
Loved this! It's quite a pairing in
@davidjalmond
and
@DaveMcKean
- brilliantly told and beautifully illustrated. A real dark journey into nature, ripe for discussion with KS2. In terms of the limits to our imagination, a great accompaniment to Furthermoor,
@DarrenSimpson44
.👍
My love and knowledge of reading has multiplied by goodness knows what in the last few years, and a lot of that is down to some of the contrivibutors in this book. I can't wait to learn more!
#readingforpleasure
Tonight I broke the news to the children that there would be very little in the way of Christmas presents this year.
They nodded, and simply said, 'Has
@smithsmm
done his picture book countdown again?'
They knew...
Latest blog - Reading Scrapbooks and Brilliant Reading Leads
What the scrapbooks showed us about the reading culture in our school and the awesome things
@AmieC53
is doing about them.
@Teacherglitter
My daughters are 10 and 8. My eldest wanted to start reading a book with her sister at bedtime, I suggested Podkin. I have a copy and my daughter has now borrowed one from her school library. They're sat on her bed reading it together and my heart just wants to burst.
@kmlarwood
Child 1 has tested positive. She's ok, a bit lethargic tonight.
She missed her best mate's birthday party today and will miss a big chunk of the xmas shenanigans at school. Not a single complaint or moan. She's absolutely ace.
'I Can Only draw Worms by
@gomabbitt
is a laugh out loud book with hysterical descriptions. There are multiple worms in this book, each with a unique personality. Funny descriptions and fantastic illustrations, a perfect book for early readers who want a laugh.'
One of my Y6s.👍
@smithsmm
@abbyaug
I think he has a point. I'm not letting my children watch Star Wars until I'm 100% convinced they can build their own spaceship and successfully attempt a jump of light speed. Otherwise they just won't get it.
Highlight of my week was Thursday morning. Spent about an hour talking about books I had on order or that I'd read that were coming into class. Put up pictures of them, kids signed up for the ones they wanted to read the most.
Huge excitement levels.
Off timetable.
Essential.
Where to begin? This is a brilliant book. I'll be thinking about it for a while, I'll never read anything quite like it. What. A. Book.
@KirstyApplebaum
Absolute stunner from
@FlyingEyeBooks
! Everything you need to know about plants! Activities you can do at home, messages about the environment, brilliant facts about plants around the world, gorgeous visuals. It really is a celebration. Love it.👍
Bumble and Snug by
@markbradleyart
Best friends who always have good intentions but it doesn't always go to plan! A perfect introduction to graphic novels.👍
Everything I've heard about this book is true. It's incredible. The characters and relationships are so real. One of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Thank you
@philearle
Child 1 asked for a chapter so I read her one. Then another, and another until 2 (gorgeous) hours had gone by and we'd finished the book. Such an original book. It's glorious in every way. Anyone in y4-6 looking for a read for the summer term? Get this. Your class will love it
MIND BLOWN!!
This was absolutely incredible
@sophieinspace
- we all LOVED IT! Set, songs, costumes, the cast (how is there only 6 of them??!!), the whole show is a masterpiece. Take a bow
@LesEnfantsTerr
.👏
I've come home and have looked through this with a huge smile on my face.
@DarrellWakelam
is an absolute genius and this books need to be in every school across the country.
It's absolutely brilliant.👏
As good as everyone says. An utterly brilliant, important book. I laughed, cried, got very angry with a particular character, and cannot wait to read your next book.
@BooksandChokers
@_KnightsOf
As brilliant as everyone is saying. This incredible verse novel by
@EarlyTrain
and illustrated
@Joetoddstanton
is a must read for Y6. Raw, honest, beautiful, it's not an easy read - but sometimes the best things aren't.
Absolute knockout.
When
@jonnybid
and
@TJGriffiths
recommend the same book it's a good idea to check it out! This is absolutely brilliant - gorgeous artwork, fab information that covers so many different curriculum areas, and just really bloomin' interesting - this is a belter.👍
@sambrewster
I can't remember who recommended these on here but thank you! A feast for the eyes, exciting stories and the perfect length for child 2 to be read to or child 1 to be read on her own. They're ace.👍
@Joetoddstanton
I've jumped on the bandwagon and done my favourite books of the year and written a thank you to all those people who have enhanced my reading life.
Late to the Party Reader: 2021- A Love Letter to Reading
Catching up on some gems of the past few years that I missed. Started with this beaut from
@Kiran_MH
. Its one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen, and the story absolutely matches it. Loving it.👍
