Amulet books 1-5 actually came out once a year. After a near death experience w/ bacterial meningitis & learning to live w/ limited abilities, they came out 2 yrs apart. After a second trip to the hospital, I decided to work at the pace of life so I can be here to do more books.

I love that people are excited about Amulet 9, but I’ll note that graphic novelists, who both write & draw a book, are expected to work faster than novelists, and it’s tough to match that expectation w/ the reality of the work involved.

Not surprising. As a 4th generation American of Asian descent I still have to explain to people that my books are not the same as Japanese manga. (Amulet is not even published in Japan) As long as you look a certain way, you will always be considered a visitor in your own home.

I read Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki in college, on my apartment balcony, over the course of a weekend. When I got to the end, I was inspired to create a project like it sometime in my life to recreate a similar experience for others. One more book to go!

I met Steve Aoki in high school (his cousin is like family to me). We attended the same college, where he put on epic shows in the building he lived in (Pickle Patch). He’s one of the hardest working people I’ve met, so no amount of stratospheric success would come as a surprise.

Regarding art school discourse going around right now, I’ll say this for artists in high school: I attended a public college to study film history. Never stopped drawing. Art only needs practice, because it is subjective. Search for the WHY not the HOW, and constantly practice.

If I produced books at the speed I can draw, I could probably do a book every 2-3 months, but they would be read once, put away, and forgotten. I have hoped to create sustainable stories, and that means they must encourage being read more than once and shared with others.

I draft thumbnail versions of every scene in Amulet an average of 9 times (sometimes 3, sometimes 30) which means writing/drawing 1800 pgs of roughs per 200 pg book. This is an answer to the common question: “if you can draw so fast, how come it takes so long to make a book?”

Currently working on Amulet 9. No release date yet, but we are working at a steady pace, and I’m doing my best to put as much energy and effort as I believe the last book in the series deserves.

@boltcity my daughter has read all 8 of your amulet books and we can’t seem to find anything on your final book #9 . Are you still going to release the last book and if so is there a rough idea when that would be? She loved the series by the way!!

My apologies to Amulet readers in Kennewick, WA. As you've probably learned, I won't be there next week & will be doing virtual sessions + personal drawings for every reader. I will, however, be focused on completing Amulet 9 in time to not delay it any longer. I'm almost there.
