A new cheat in the PS2 version of Rayman 3 was discovered today by Droolie! By using the profile name "PSONE", the game will switch to a low-resolution mode and disable texture filtering. For unknown reasons, in the game's internals, this mode is known as "Christian Slater mode".

so apparently, in certain countries, ubisoft released a version of Rayman 2 that is identical to the normal version of the game, aside from the complete removal of the French language:

One of my longest sought-after Rayman titles finally came up on ebay for a decent price. This is probably the most obscure Rayman game in existence, only coming built-in to 2 phones, and not being emulatable at all. Definitely happy to be able to play this one for the first time.

To clarify: this is the source code for the engine, with asset files for an early version of Rayman Raving Rabbids DS. To actually build Rayman 2 out of this, we would need to get the engine to load the compiled asset files from Rayman 2, or (ideally) decompile the asset files.

Not enough people talk about how Old-School Runescape totally plagiarized Rayman 2 in 2018 and then silently updated the songs two years later before anyone made a big deal of it. Songs here are "Meanwhile, in the Prison Ship" from Rayman 2 and "Dance of the Nylocas" from OSRS.

At this point I finally realised what was going on. The GBA was indeed just running a small amount of code from RAM in a loop. That code though, was interfacing with the cartridge to receive audio and video from *A GENESIS ON A CHIP IN THE CART*. (10/x)

Turns out this wasn't a software emulator at all, but a hardware clone packed into a tiny chip. I have never seen such a tiny chip for this before, but it is the only reasonable explanation. I'm honestly incredibly impressed that they could pull this off. (12/x)

French was removed from the readme, the installer, and disabled in-game. The CD has a mastering date of one day later than the standard release, so it can't have been a localisation issue. Super curious why this was a thing.

The first thing I did was attempt to dump the cart via actual hardware with a link cable. This was partially successful: the resulting ROM booted on emulator and showed a splash screen, but then crashed upon trying to boot the game. (2/x)

Unfortunately this means it isn't really possible to experiment with the emulator as I had hoped. Still incredible to see though, and I hope that maybe it might be possible to flash other ROMs on there. (13/14).

When the cart was disconnected, the audio+video was just reading off an open bus instead, which caused the static to appear. Meanwhile the game itself continued to run on the cartridge hardware. (11/x)

What I found was that the main ROM (internally named GASA_MENU), after showing the splash, actually copied a secondary, multi-boot (link cable boot) ROM (GASA_ENG) into the memory of the GBA and then executed that ROM. (4/x)

I mean I get that they probably don't want people selling the original but like... is it really going to cut into profits that much? Is the market for a collection that isn't even complete that high that it will make any difference to their bottom line?

The trouble was, on analysing this second ROM, it seemed to only have around 0x8000 bytes of code. This is far less than would be needed to implement a full blown Genesis emulator. Furthermore, the code seemed to loop infinitely and never return execution back to the cart. (5/x)

This took me by surprise, as usually if the data lines of the cart are disconnected at all the game should completely crash, but instead it seemed to be working as if nothing had happened! (8/x)

This means that there was no way it could, for instance, be loading a new bank onto the cart to jump back to the code there. At this point I was stumped, I had no idea how this could be working, and I figured there must be something I was missing in the code. (6/x)
