Yesterday, an elected official asked me if my cane was “for show.” Years ago that comment - in the midst of a work event in front of others - would’ve embarrassed and upset me. Now it angers me beyond words at those we elect & knowing how many of us deal with this everyday.

I’m waiting for the @MTA to stop pretending those cameras not working are an outlier. From my accident & other shitty moments on the subway following it, I learned the truth about our transit system: there are no working camera in a majority of stations

This is an example of how ingrained ableism is in society & here it’s coupled w/ ageism. Mobility aids are used by millions of Americans everyday, myself included. Showing people using mobility aids as a negative thing that makes them “incapable” of doing the job harms us all.

Last night a Senator greeted me, looked down at my cane and joked, “Is that for self defense?” Just now another Senator - who has seen me with a cane for years now - started a meeting by pointing to my cane and asking how my recovery is going. You all are exhausting me.

More personally, showing elected officials using mobility aids and/or being disabled as a way to illustrate that they cannot or should not be in that role is hurtful & keeps disabled people from not just running for office, but being a part of public life. Do better, @NewYorker .

Sorry not sorry - I’m happy with this decision on #CongestionPricing . There was little to no care for the impact this policy will have on disabled NYers. We need more accessible subways & buses before we start forcing NYers to use the largely inaccessible public transit system.

Being a #disabled candidate is an exercise in patience & preparation. The patience is for the intrusive & disrespectful questions & jokes. Example from tonight: “What’s that for (my cane)? If you can’t walk, should you run?” It was a joke to them but not to me. #CripTheVote

Heard through my apt door in response to my campaign sign there: New Neighbor 1: “Do you think she lives there or they support Rebecca?” New Neighbor 2: “There’s no way Rebecca lives here.” I popped out & we had a lovely chat. Candidates live in studio apts in walk-ups too!

Nothing brings New Yorkers together like collectively yelling at a car with New Jersey license plates that’s making an illegal traffic move on Columbus Ave

#ICYMI read my op-ed in @TeenVogue 👇 "Everything changed for me that Saturday seven years ago. Now, I will not stop fighting until everything changes in this city for people with disabilities." #CripTheVote #RebeccaForNewYork

This curly haired, cane rocking, #union repping woman will be on the ballot June 22nd! How surreal is that?! Very, when you’re a first time candidate. Special shout out to @caspian_brock for coordinating petitioning to get us on the ballot! #CripTheVote #RebeccaForNewYork

Okay and @AndrewYang following up by saying we need to address homelessness so people feel good coming to the city again. How about we need to address homelessness to help our neighbors without homes and not make it about tourists? This guy is heartless.

Good morning! Many Americans settled back into daily routines this week after the holidays. For many, transit is part of that - but too many Americans lack access due to disability. Here's what we're doing about it. 🧵

On Monday we sent a letter to @NYCCFB asking them to exempt language translation, #ASL interpretation & #accessibility costs from the spending cap. Yesterday, they rejected our request. Join us Monday at 6pm to fight for #inclusive elections. #CripTheVote #RebeccaForNewYork

Last week I asked all NYC candidates to release a #DisabilityJustice platform. I didn’t have to ask @elizaorlins though b/c she was already working on one and thinking of ways to improve our unjust criminal justice system for disabled New Yorkers. Check it out👇 #CripTheVote

As District Attorney, I will work in partnership with New Yorkers who are disabled to both reduce violent crime and empower members of the disability community who have experienced a crime. Check out our policy release in @politicony and read it here:

@bd_wetz Also an accessibility issue! It’s like when they started removing seating from subway stations to “combat homelessness.”

FYI: after months of widespread fear-mongering, @NYCMayor decided just this morning to share statistics showing crime is lower than last year.

Closing down an early voting poll and perched on a hydrant so I don’t have to stand and put weight on my leg. These hectic days are taking a toll on my body but it’s a sacrifice I’ll make time and again to bring about change longterm for all of us. #CripTheVote

“Flip flops and a cane? Guess you don’t need that cane.” It’s funny to me how many people offer medical feedback or critique my use of a cane but aren’t doctors. Pro-tip: Keep your uninformed comments to yourself 😉
