@CharacterGap Outside of AA meetings, I don't think temperance gets its due. (At least in the context of American social life.)

If personnel is policy, then the NSC has a chronic issue on its hands... I recently talked with US national security historian @johngansjr to get his take on the NSC. It's not a pretty one. Duty and ambition drive the military and intelligence professionals that funnel into the

Shocking stats from @TheEconomist : "Over the past three years [RU] has lost around 2m more people than it would ordinarily have done, as a result of war, disease and exodus. The life expectancy of Russian males aged 15 fell by almost five years, to the same level as in Haiti."

I'm starting a great books summer camp in Tulsa! Send your high school students to read classic texts with me on virtue and happiness. Seminars led by me and my assistant dean; fun activities organized by current honors college students. And your kid can earn college credit!

Some local history... Eden Center, a storied Vietnamese-American shopping center just outside DC, is named after a 1960s Saigon marketplace. 🍜🍚 (I recommend visiting if you haven't yet!)

Everyone talks about how prescient de Tocqueville's predictions were, but more impressive is how mature was his theory: culture + institutions, considering historical inertia, mismatch btwn desired outcomes and institutional contexts. More mature than much social science today.

The greatest action film that is actually a Christmas movie is @Schwarzenegger 's 1996 classic, Jingle All the Way. Yet this is only his second best film. The first, of course, is his intro to the 1990 reboot of Milton Friedman's "Free to Choose." Merry Christmas, #EconTwitter !

A sobering, useful article on the limits of time management. "The only way to get around to the important things is: Instead of trying to eradicate all the other stuff, [make progress] on the important stuff first. You just have to let the other chips fall where they will."
