What sort of thing did Australians expect to find in England? 🌏

This is a really problematic way to frame the question. The primary duty is to safeguard and prevent the abuse of girls. Whether this criminalises teenage boys should not form part of how a school meets this duty.

Prominent male barristers using their considerable power & privilege to criticise women for having the temerity to disagree with them is generally not a good look & especially today.

Finally, I was able to listen to this. A superb assessment of 'the tyranny' of social censure and the need for us all to have the moral courage to combat it.
“People ask me sometimes... 'When will there be enough women on the court?' And my answer is, 'When there are nine.' People are shocked, but there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that." And what a giant amongst those men she was, RIP RBG
@soniasodha
This is not okay & just demonstrates the broader point about not reducing every issue down to 'white women' v 'women of colour' which ignores the fact that neither group is some homogenous blob that has the same view on everything.

Can women please stop referring to themselves as ‘lucky’ or saying that ‘he’s really good’ if their male partner participates in childcare etc They are equally responsible & are not doing you a favour in doing their fair share!

It's been an honour to visit Geneva ahead of the

Such a fantastic piece: ‘Female patterns of criminality cannot be divorced from male violence. Two-thirds of women in prison are survivors of domestic abuse; over half experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse during their childhood.’

Recently, I've been talking with lots of women who run services for survivors of DA for my current research project & I'm frankly in awe of what they do, under an increasingly challenging funding environment. Let's try not to make their jobs harder than they already are.
No it didn't & see Article 17 of the Istanbul Convention - inadequate media reporting of violence against women can reinforce gender
stereotypes that perpetuate gender-based violence.
(2) ‘It is doubtful that a child aged 14 or 15 could understand and weigh the long-term risks and consequences of the administration of puberty blockers.”
We dont talk about this a lot, but researching VAWG is tough & can take its toll. I can't emphasise enough, therefore, the importance of conferences such as

Let’s reflect the data, stop the passive construction in our terminology & add in the active agent: it’s not violence against women, it’s male violence against women.

Sad to hear about Bamber Gascoigne. Confession, for years I thought the two teams were literally placed on top of one another & there were some stairs to the side so the team on the top panel could get there..😳

Two most annoying things about conferences IMO:
(1) people going way over their alloted time on a panel, expressly acknowledging it, yet continuing on regardless.
(2) ineffective Chairing & time management of panels.

Sad to hear of Katherine Whitehorn’s death. We seem to be in a time where the opinions of older women are routinely written off as irrelevant but I found her articles in the

A good moment to reflect on the fact that the VAWG movement has a history of being undermined and undervalued within international human rights, and most particularly the voices and views of women heralding from the Global South.

I'm troubled increasingly by reading work in which references to on trend buzzwords/theoretical concepts are seemingly enough to make or evidence quite substantial claims. The application of said concept or at least an explanation of how A gets to B is still needed.
Research has consistently demonstrated that sexual assault & violence against women is significantly underreported. Any data we do have on this has to therefore be treated as an underestimate from the outset. Evidence of prevalence also has to be seen against this context.

Have seen someone (a white man, you’ll be shocked to hear) claim advocating safeguarding is the equivalent to “won’t someone think of the children” prudishness. No. Safeguarding is necessary because we live in a world where people - overwhelmingly male - rape and abuse children.
