- without Celebrity Poker in the early days of the poker boom do you think poker would have taken off as much? No. You are doing a great job building the game and making it approachable and fun.
Quick story about my mom for Mother's Day.
Nov 1995. I'm 25, she's turning 50 in a week. We're talking on the phone and I'm telling her all about my upcoming trip to Vegas with my now somewhat infamous group of poker players called "The Tiltboys" -- my crew.
She's 75 now. She LIVES in Vegas now and plays 3-4 hours a day online at -- supplementing her income with the dollars for the kids she's fleecing in her $10 and $20 sit and gos.
That's my mom. I couldn't be prouder.
My son battled in second ever tennis match against a better more experienced opponent. Lost first set. Battled back from 1-4 to win the second in a tie break. In the super tiebreak, was down 8-9 and hit a clear ace to tie.
Kid called it out. Won the point and match.

If you aren’t rooting for
@TigerWoods
to win today, I don’t think we can be friends until Monday.
When I saw him last December in the Bahamas, he told me he “just wants these guys to feel the Heat down the back nine with me in the lead one more time.” Today he gets his wish.
You never forget the hand that busts you out of the
@wsop
main event final table. It’s been 17 years for me and I can remember every card, every chip count. I’ve relieved that 4th place finish hand probably 1000 times playing “what if”...
Here is what
@TigerWoods
told me in December last year: “Phil, just one time I want Jordan and these kids to feel the heat coming down the stretch of a major with me in the hunt.” Looks like he got his wish. We all did! Must see TV this morning for any golf fan.
My sons have friends over tonight. They just grabbed the poker chips. “Dad we are playing Texas Holdem. 0.01-0.02! Come play with us!”
I’m going to bust them all. I

Oh, how I so appreciate the time I spent in television. The residual checks that come every so often are just amazing -- thank you all for streaming past episodes of Less Than Perfect, Joey, Las Vegas, Saturday Night Live that I appeared on.

Except mom. Who had yet to have her head hit the pillow. At 50, she outlasted, outwitted, and outplayed 10 25 year old guys in Las Vegas and won the coveted "Sleep Deprivation Last Longer" bet for the trip by about 7 hours.
@ChancesCards
When I’m teaching (super rare these days) I find it helpful to couch this as:
Getting a worse hand to call
Getting a better hand to fold
Getting a hand that might eventually beat you to fold
This seems to resonate with brand new players better for some reason.
YMMV
In news no one will care about, I’ve hired a chess coach. Was hoping for

but will set my sights on being worthy of those guys in 6-9 months. I’m officially tired of being terrible. I dream chess like The Queens Gambit but I can’t see Mate in 2.

One thing I wondered about you
@phil_hellmuth
- how do you think you would have been different had Chan won and you never won the main event? I’ve often thought about the 5-10 river cards that change every poker player’s life trajectory.

I was the "third wheel" (and libertarian to boot) for a chapter and I had a blast getting to know you both! Ignore the crazy. Listening is the most important (and lost) skill of a generation.
It started with this… 25 years ago my dear friends Perry Friedman and Michael Stern were working at Oracle and doing some low stakes gambling on the side…
She says: "You know, Phil, what I really want for my 50th is to join you and the guys in Vegas for the weekend."
For most 25 yr old guys, having your mom crash your guys trip to Vegas would be a nightmare. But you don't know my mom. I accepted and booked her a flight.
About 3am, I wake up and Mom is not in the room. I'm a little worried and disoriented. I go down to the casino and there she is, playing 5 handed with Dice and three other unfortunate souls. It's been 34 hours straight. She says she's fine. Big mound of chips. Dice looks weary.
Walking

strip and finding it hard to reconcile 2007 and 2018. Super weird remembering all the spots, the tournaments, the craziness of the poker boom and then working on a show room floor talking software and digital transformation to Fortune 1000 CIOs for

Can someone give me one good reason Congress shouldn’t be able to vote via video conference or electronically while not physically present? Seems archaic and stupid - and now potentially deadly to boot.

Hey
@NickFaldo006
you gave me a lesson 10 years ago at MJs Celebrity Golf thing in the Bahamas. I brought my 1 yr old son Xander to the tourney... what do you think?
She gets out of the shower and says, "Phil, I'm just so wired up, I know I'm not going to be able to go to sleep. I'm going back down to play for a few more hours."
And she did. The gang assembled for the buffet breakfast around 10am. Everyone had had maybe 8 hours of sleep.

"AG, PG, and DICE for 2-4 Hold'em" -- that is 2-4 limit hold'em. No limit wasn't played much or at all in Vegas in those days. We all have a seat. Mom and Dice battle in one of the first few hands, her capping the bet preflop, betting all the way, and winning a monster pot.
What irks me the most is that he was about to learn a great lesson: how a miracle comeback against adversity feels or how to handle a hard fought defeat.
Instead, he got robbed of both of those possibilities.
@DougPolkPoker
I can’t imagine Ivey, Dwan, or Jungle writing a book or hosting entertaining poker TV. I also can’t imagine what it would be like to be as good as they are at the game. Really enjoying watching Nick Schulman crush at both disciplines these days - rare talent to be celebrated.
Pleased to be able to donate two poker night packages to the USO NW tonight at their annual gala raising $8000 to support the troops. Great night - I got to wear my wedding tux again -
@BarbSmithGordon
was a little surprised it still fits.
Friday afternoon at 5pm and 10 of us arrive at the Mirage in Las Vegas. Mom meets us at reception already 2-3 drinks in, gives all the guys a big hug, and we immediately head to the poker room. She's already put a few of us on "the list" and 15 minutes later we hear...
@PokerNews
I remember the very first hand I won against Doyle. Nearly every poker player I know can say the same. I didn’t play or win many pots against the greatest, but I cherished the opportunity to compete against him. RIP.
Shitty way to learn that losers sometimes win.
All I know is that if my kid did that, it would be the last tennis match he’d play.
The kids parents were sitting right there. They clearly knew it was in. Didn’t seem the least but upset by the turn of events.
@DaveSFoley
@michaelianblack
I’d like on role, please, but might want to save it for the 5th or 6th season as I seem to kill every sitcom I’m on. RIP Joey and Less Than Perfect!
The next 24 hours, the 10 of us -- including my mom -- are glued to our seats. Occasional trips to the buffet, bathroom, bar, craps table are a blur. But now it's like 6pm Saturday and I finally give out and go up to the room. Dice and Mom are still at it.
@UberFacts
Pictionary/Apples to Apple - play elimination style. Judge picks worst answer, losing player is OUT and becomes judge for next round. Play down to a single winner. Way more fun than playing for “points” imho.
“The score you are posting is outside this golfers range. Are you sure?” Why yes, GHIN, I am sure I just shot the best round of my life - finally broke par for the first time. 33-38.

At my pleading, they both get up from the table and cash out and decide to head up for some sleep. When we get to the room, mom takes a shower -- the smoke-filled poker tables in the casinos back then were crazy bad.
