People, all over Greater Manchester, telling us about their town. Every week a new Greater Mancunion will take over the account. Now: Becca of Prestwich
On the train home back to ‘Manceinion’ now. It doesn’t take a native speaker to work out what that bottom line translates to if you travel on trains often enough.
"Libraries aren't just a place to obtain books for free. They're one of the few public spaces left in our society where you're allowed to exist without the expectation of spending money."
This bit of the city centre always saddens me. The neglected and rather unloved Barton Arcade just off Deansgate. In desperate need of some t.l.c. and investment, it could be beautiful but as it is looks like a set from a dystopian movie. Very sad.
Still can’t get my head around this row of tiny terraces right in the middle of the City Centre.
I remember years ago trying to find Sankey’s (when Ancoats wasn’t so nice) and we ended up on this road & thought we were well and truly lost even though it’s basically next door 😂
Who recognises this place? Just sits there shut and untouched full of old safes for no reason…
Been like that for many years.
Shame as I need to buy a safe.
I’m a day late, but Happy Greater Manchester day everyone 🥳
On 1st April 1974, Greater Manchester was formed from parts of the historic counties of Lancashire, Cheshire & the West Riding of Yorkshire.
We are very lucky here to have so many historic and iconic buildings still around.
The Express Building on Great Ancoats ST. is probably one of my favourites - I can never resist stopping to take some pictures!
Weird to think that this and Central Library are the same age.
Been delving into the history of
#SinclairsOysterBar
last night thanks to you all. I read up on the relocation story and it being literally raised to a new street level to join the new development.
(Oh, and apparently the area is called The Shambles. York, eat your heart out!)
Just out on a little walk by Ancoats Marina & thought I’d show you this. If you don’t know… ‘Cast No Shadow’ was written on the underside of the bridge here so it would reflect on the water.
Look out for it when you visit!
@ChrisO_wiki
Someone earlier in the thread told me there is an actual Welsh word “wedi drefnu”, but it literally means organised, not sorted. So I presume it was a purposeful choice not to use that to keep the alliteration like in the English version.
Just had a call from my mum and she used this phrase-
“Ooh it’s dark over Bill’s mothers” meaning it looks like rain. Apparently this is an old Salford (possibly Eccles even Swinton) saying. Now I’m thinking what other things we say that others may not understand…
#localdialect
Heaton Park is on my doorstep and I’m very glad of that. I walk here most days and, as it’s Europe’s biggest municipal park, there’s plenty to explore. Including this delightful viewpoint, The Temple. Anyone been here?
Passed a few pubs today so I’m going to share a story from each one of them…
Scroll down the thread below ⬇️
Starting with ‘The Shamrock’ with the worst welcome in the world, rabid dogs and a £20 minimum on card. No wonder it was boarded up. This had potential in Ancoats.
The future that never was - Manchester's underground railway. Although work was started (and tunnels between Victoria and the Arndale Centre still exist) it was abandoned shortly after that to be replaced by the overground Metrolink tram service.
I love this city. You can tell so many stories from this point. World class universities, 25 Nobel prizes, music, poetry, creativity and invention. But it’s the people that make Manchester, Manchester. Loved sharing my week with you. On twitter as
@McrSomnambulist
Sinclair’s.
Best pub in Manchester?
Impossibly cheap beers. Sun trap. And they ban you from going on your phone so people actually have to converse with one another 🤯
One of my favourite bookshops on Planet Manchester
@ChorltonBkshop
has been here on Wilbraham Rd over 40 years. Will also order a book in for you if they’ve not got it in stock. Friendly, knowledgeable and a terrible temptation every time I walk past.
Gooooood evening, Manchester!!!
I'm Helen, a 50 year old mad head originally from Flixton and now in Swinton after going round town a bit.
I'm a writer, nerd, D&D player, musical theatre singer, really bad dancer, and rock chick. Nice to meet you!
Nice wander round Heaton Park this morning. I'm no photographer but it's impossible to do the beauty of this place justice anyway. It's the biggest park in the northwest apparently - covering at least 600 acres!
On Tuesday evening I collect surplus food from Greggs in Rochdale and then take to the Soup Kitchen on Wednesday morning. We pack all the food donated from Greggs, Tesco, Asda, Aldi and M&S and hand out to approx 100 people.
Hello everyone. My name is Dympna. I have worked on numerous projects across the city from the Commonwealth Games to Castlefield Viaduct. I am also a freelance tour guide in Manchester.
Some hidden gems from the city centre for
#TilesOnTuesday
1. Victoria baths
2. pevril on the peake
3. Rib street, street sign, northern quarter
4. The floor of Manchester Library
The Moon Under Water. Named after a George Orwell short story about the perfect pub. One of the largest and most ornate pubs in the UK. Roosters Assassin IPA 4.3%
Thread 4/5 - Central Library
First time I've been in here too and for a relatively modern building (1934) surprisingly beautiful inside as well as really striking from the outside.

Enjoyed my homemade curry this evening. I love Indian / South Asian food - so far I’ve loved Dishoom and Bundobust in Manchester centre. Where else would you recommend, Manchester folk?
It’s been nice running the feed this week. However there have been a number of nasty bitter troll people sharing snarky remarks or judging what you post.
People have given up their time to share a bit about themselves and the area they live. Be kind and show some respect.
Good morning! Today I have climbed the 186 steps to the top of the cathedral tower- along with representatives from across the city- as we raised the progress flag
Doesn't Manchester look grand from this view?
Hello, this is Jamie of Prestwich, looking forward to showing you my little corner of Prestwich. We'll be going on a few walks and looking at local points of interest along the way.
There are no green spaces in Manchester? No way. Taken today along the banks of the River Mersey. Chorlton Meadows if you’re old school. Enjoying my free Friday. What’s your favourite 15 minutes away park or green space?
Morning! I'm Grace, I live in Pendlebury and work
@ManCathedral
. Hoping to celebrate Manchester and share my day to day with you
Up early -occasionally I present the Daily Service on Radio 4, recorded at home
This set up helps sound quality (I sit under the blanket with a mic!)
ADMIN: It's our one year anniversary today! 🎉🎊
A massive thank you to everyone who has curated and interacted with the account along its journey so far. Hope to keep it running for many more anniversaries to come!
#MyXAnniversary
At Salford Quays earlier. Detroit Bridge, former railway bridge moved here in the 80s. To ‘float’ it into place it had to have a certificate of seaworthiness. That means it’s also a ship.
Today some my posts will slighty vere to a personal aspect
This morning I will be visiting
@TheChristie
@TheChristieNHS
for another dose of chemotherapy
I have been under their care since Dec 2022
Whilst there I would like to share my experience of living with cancer in Stockport
It’s 50 years since the creation of Greater Manchester.
What great secondhand find
Temped to line some shelves with it, or decoupage a table….
Would love it framed, but I think that would be very pricey.
Hello! I’m Niamh, and I’ll be your curator for this week!
I’m from Bolton, and I’m a student at the University of Manchester, so I’ll be talking a bit about areas around Bolton and Central Manchester, then on Thursday I’ll document a day in my life.
Let’s go!
Hi everyone, Grace here - I last did a week here just before Christmas!
I live in Salford and am a priest
@ManCathedral
There's been loads going on in Manchester! Was anyone taking part in the run earlier or at the parade this evening? Tweet your pics if you were and I'll RT!
Ooft! Late start this morning because I had a job interview (it went well)
Having lived in Whitefield/Prestwich for 30 years, I'd like to use some of today to take a trip down memory lane (some not necessarily my memory)
First up: pics of Bury Old Road (next to Heaton Park)
I completed the Crochet project yesterday and gifted it to one of the fishing lads who does loads of little jobs around the lake keeping it tidy.
He loves Bob Marley.
Well, that's about all from me. I hope you have enjoyed my week. Welcome to all those that have started following in the week. Take care. Love from the HG, Paul 🙂🍺👍🦈🏉
A lot is made of gentrification in Prestwich and I for one am a big fan. I love that craft ale bars sit by Joey Holts’ pubs. Artisan coffee shops aside Butterfingers greasy spoon. And my favourite organic fruit/veg shop adjacent to Iceland. It takes all sorts!
@VillageGreensUK
One of the first things I did when I unpacked in my new apartment was sign up to my local library! Any other keen readers? What are peoples recommendations? Even better if they are Manchester based authors or settings!
If I were a business in the city centre, I would make sure to stock umbrellas no matter what. Just so Primark doesn't run the gamut on days like today.
‘This & that’ is tucked away in the northern quarter. It’s been serving ‘rice & 3’ since 1984.
A fixed menu, differing daily offering a choice of curries.
My photo does not convey the tastiness!
This veggie option was £6!
Queues were our the door today
Today, we have had a mosey around Stockport Town centre. It's a little grey and drizzly. The market building seems to be a popular film/ tv location recently. It is a wonderful building.
It's always worth remembering that there's way more to Greater Manchester than just the centre.
This time last year I walked the route of the Mersey from its source in Stockport as far as East Didsbury. Here's a few pictures I took on the way:
ADMIN: Just popping up to memorialize a particularly dazzling event last night that could be seen all over Greater Manchester.
Please comment your Aurora Borealis pics and where you are in Greater Manchester/UK!

Lunch time! 🍽️
Still haven’t unpacked the kitchen after moving house, 🏠 so not much chance of cooking tonight.
Getting a hot meal on my break from work,
If you know, you know:
Evening all, it’s Marise from Blackley taking the baton from Becky.
I run Lakeside Cafe in Blackleys beautiful park Boggart Hole Clough.
This week I will be introducing you to the amazingness of the Clough and the wonderful people we have in North Manchester ♥️
7 years to the day that 22 people were tragically taken... Manchester will always remember them.
The first photo was taken in the days that followed, when our city showed messages of love not hate, and rallied together like never before 🐝❤️
Because of dinner plans, I'm checking out. Thanks for a lovely week! If you're in the area, pop into
@ManCathedral
and say hi!
A HUGE shout out to admin Joanna for running this account!
Find me
@GraceREThomas
- in the meantime, here's a pic of the bee outside the cathedral ❤️🐝
World famous Bury Market. Even on a cold blustery day it exudes a convivial warmth. Victoria Wood statue and of course the wonderful Robert Peel. Also a bit of black pudding!
Good day of shopping ft a mooch around
@rxtheatre
. One of my absolute all time favourite places - when I used to work in Manchester I'd come in here during my lunch with a book and have a relaxing read.
A very good evening to you all. My name is Danny I’ll be posting in this account for the next week. Thanks to Seb for last week. I’m a pub singer, TV extra and proud Mancunian. Let’s see where the week takes us!
Huge shout out today to a lovely man who found my daughter's phone in the Aldi on the Height, and, having spotted her ID in the phone case, came to our house today to return it
She lost it yesterday and was beside herself
The kindness of strangers ❤️
ADMIN: Our current curator has taken ill sadly - but a lovely past volunteer has stepped in last minute.
So please welcome (next up): Stacy of Littleborough!
We managed to capture a VERY special moment at our new recruits pass out parade today… 💍 💒
Congratulations to James and Melissa!!
Certainly one way to start your new career 🫡❤️🚒
A walk from
#saletown
or Altrincham that I recommend is the
#bridgewatetcanal
to Dunham. It’s an 11 mile round trip, but you can walk there and get the bus back to Altrincham. It’s such a peaceful part of Trafford. What local walks do you love?
Hello All, Karen here. Karen of Eccles (again) to be more precise. Thank you for having me back. I hope you are all well this fine evening. I shall be here with you for the next week - letting you into my little life over in sunny Salford.
Morning all! A lot of coughing on the Bury to Altrincham metrolink this morning but I'm too shy to put a mask on for fear of offending anybody or looking like a wally.
I'm currently feigning interest in the map above the doors to keep my head turned away from the culprits. 👺
Good evening Manchester, I'll be your host for the week. I'm Paul and I live in Heald Green, Cheadle, with my family and our 2 dogs.
I work as an engineer and i'm a big
@SaleSharksRugby
fan. Hope you enjoy my week 🙂
⭐️ Good morning everyone! I’m
@_leoniethomas
and I live in
#saletown
in Trafford. This week I’ll be taking you around my local area via photos.
⭐️ One of my huge passions is walking, so I’m kicking us off today with a photo of
#BridgewaterCanal
in Sale.
So I’m off to Portmeirion with my mum today for a summer day out. I’ll be taking loads of photos and sharing them with you during the day. Fingers crossed for the weather. Where are your favourite places for a day out? We are spoilt for choice here in Greater Manchester!
Thread 1/5 - Chetham Library
Oh my! This was a real treat. A funny and knowledgeable volunteer guide took us on a 90-minute tour of the Chetham Library and it's beautiful 15th Century home. I highly recommend booking a tour.

Thank you Greater Manchester.
