Today Biophysics and Biochemistry lost a giant. Robert Baldwin, known to many as Buzz has passed away. A true scholar, a man associated with so much we know about protein stability & folding, a wonderful teacher, & possibly the kindest, most generous scientist ever.🙏🏿

99.999/100 papers conflate ALL phase transitions as LLPS 😢. Phase separation, a segregative density transition, has many forms XYPS; XY could be LL, LS, LLC, etc. Irrespective of the prefix, PS implies separation into 2 phases. 👉🏿👉🏿PS processes ignore specific interactions 1/3

We read about the triumphs & failures of "Indian / Chinese / European / British /American … science". Good science is driven by data, discovery, reproducibility, & critical thinking. It does not carry a passport & should not be associated with a nation state or particular group.

Check out our latest collaborative effort with @TanjaMittag . We uncover hidden complexities in phase transitions encoded by prion-like low complexity domains. Insights from synergies among experiment, theory, computation, & informatics. Lots of surprises!

Reviewers' comments & decisions can feel like the product of an unknown agenda, limited scholarship, & abuse of power. Accepting this without dwelling on the hurt helps one get back up after each knock. Being the change we want to see in reviewers is the only healthy response.

Arg & Lys are non-equivalent drivers of phase separation & as modulators of IDP conformations ( @ProteinMagnus ). Acidic tracts aren't mirrors of basic tracts in IDPs. Lots of interesting hypotheses and speculations offered. Is there a simple explanation?

Received by first dose of vaccination today, a couple of hours before the inauguration. Immunized and protected is how I feel.

More from the lab on the topic of polyphasic linkage & ligand modulated phase separation. This is a review, but it also has new insights pertaining to ligand effects on phase transitions mediated by heterotypic interactions. Please see:
