There’s this famous case study in policy evaluation class. Development workers in an Ethiopian village noticed that the route women take to fetch water from a nearby source was bad and they decided to build a new road for easier access. The women refused to use the new road.

They learn new strategies for navigating pregnancy. They sing and dance. They have a community. It’s their safe space. It may be a nice gesture to have husbands go with their wives, but there’s no real social issue if they do not go. Ask before you build.

Lesson of the story? Ask before building. For many Nigerian women, we have learned that antenatal is one of the only opportunities they have to be away from their husbands. They cherish that time. The antenatal experience is very different from what you see in Hollywood movies.

I know you are duty-bound to defend the evil brokers in the country, but at least respect our collective intelligence while doing so. Vincent clearly said they had an agreement with NURTW where 20% of their revenue was going to them, yet wasn't enough to stop the harassment.

This meant they now had to dress better, and also risk catcalling on their way to fetch water. The bad road was their safe space. They would interact with each other on their way to fetch water, trade gossips, etc. The new road took all that away from them.

They investigated and realized that the women preferred the old route, even though it was longer and crooked, because the new road was open to the whole village and they would have to share the road with men on their way to fetch water.
