New physician grads: do not put your home address down when you register for your NPI number. Make sure you put down the hospital address! Otherwise, your home address will be out there for all to see! (Your NPI information is available easily via google).

applicants - we will NOT know if you submit ERAS today vs Sept 28th. Do not feel pressured to submit it all and have it “perfect” today. You still have some weeks to go!
Two interview slots this week went unused due to a no call no show and a super last minute cancellation.
There’s lots of people who would have loved to have those slots. Try to be considerate of your peers in this process.
#PSA
I went to the doctor today because I was forced to.
3 people have asked me the exact same questions so far and I haven’t even seen the doctor yet.
It rough out here for our patients. I can definitely understand their frustrations with the system.
PSA for consultants: If you come down to the ED and refer to us as Triage Doctors... repeatedly... be prepared for the response. I promise it won’t be pleasant. - your friendly neighborhood ED physician.
Folks… please show up on time to rotations.. look interested… pretend to care… stay in top of your patient’s progress… these things alone will get you at minimum a pass, maybe even a high pass. They will also get you a decent LOR.
Not doing them guarantees a bad one.
Reading some more applications.. and wowed. Class of 2022, y’all are out here kicking butt!! I’m so impressed!!
Let that imposter syndrome go. Y’all have ARRIVED.

- For those who are first gen in medicine, what things do you wish your family knew or understood about your journey, life, career that would have helped you excel?
@FirstGenMD
Today’s ERAS tip for you M3s: only write in your interests and hobbies that you want to talk about (and can talk about).
Bonus tip: when you say you speak a language in eras — be sure you are being honest in your abilities. Folks will conduct your interview in that language.
For those who write in their notes “age year old aa/Asian/white male/female” as the opening to their HPI - how are you deciding what race the patient is? Are you asking every single one of them? Or are you assuming?
#BiasInMedicine
PGY-0s - Enjoy this time that you have pre-intern year! Rest and relax as much as you can. Catch up on your hobbies that you put to the side as medical students. Do those crafts that you have been wanting to try! Don't study -- you have plenty of time to do that later!
In today's ERAS app review, I continue to believe that LORs are teaching me more about the letter writers than the applicants in many instances.
FYI faculty -- your student's LOR is not the place for you to air your grievances with the form itself.
Application tip of the day: Don’t leave gaps or red flags unexplained in your ERAS application. If you don’t explain it, folks are unlikely to ask and will presume the worst. Remember - you have to get the interview to even be asked.
#Match2023
A word on personal statements: Use your personal statement to show us who you are. Please don't reiterate your CV - we have that already. Tell us something that we wouldn't get from the rest of your application.

Omg. I just found my rank list.
I may not stop laughing for the rest of tonight.
The match works in mysterious ways… 2023 me has a vastly different opinion than 2010 me did.
13 years ago I did not match at my

program. Every day I am thankful that I didn’t. My life would have been very different if I had and I love how my career turned out. I have always been proud to be a graduate of

.
@AndrewGutwein
The risk of not matching on the student end is much higher stakes than it is on the program end. None of us like not filling our programs but we are already trained and employed. Not condoning lying but I understand it. Folks are trying to get a job by any means necessary.
Super honored to receive the Master Educator award from faculty, staff, residents and students today. To be amongst the ranks of so many people that I look up to as mentors and friends means the world to me. Thanks to everyone for their support!

applicants - Make sure you double check the time zones for all of your interviews. Daylight savings time might have messed up your schedules depending on where you’re interviewing!
Had to see the doc this morning. My weight is 20lbs down from where it was in November per the doctors office and my blood pressure went from 140 systolic to 115.
Small wins this morning. Self care matters.
Why can't we just standardize MSPEs (Dean's Letters)?
Graphs, code words, thirds/quartiles/quintiles, one school even has some sort of pentagon shaped graph...
Students none of these things work against you - honestly, but it's a lot of work to understand each school.
@DrSuperSalty
Them: those doctors at the other hospital were terrible.
Me: that was me. I am those doctors. I saw you yesterday at the other hospital.

There are hundreds of Kings County residents and alumni that wouldn’t be the doctors they are today without this woman. Thank you for teaching me, Mama Guia.

Very proud of every student I see on my timeline in the last 24 hours!!!! I hope y’all are out there celebrating and getting some rest. Congratulations!!
To those in the SOAP, you got this. Let’s go!
3 emails from the same applicant about their application — we have not received their application to our program.
I’m legit concerned that technology may have somehow screwed them over this some point.

- You’ve got this. You’ve been preparing for months. Your ERAS is ready to roll. Submit all your documents. Assign them to programs. Hit the button. You’re ready.

PSA: If you are writing a LOR for a student, please put it on letterhead. Sign your name. Put the date on it. Be sure that it has the correct student’s name and pronouns in it. Keep it in one font.
It’s just professional and the right thing to do.

I have been trying to ignore the match week happenings all week long… now at 14 hours or less out… I’m trying not to freak out.
Y’all aren’t alone out there. There’s stress in both sides. It’s not the same but stress none the less.

@Kavya_Davuluri
I quite possibly have the most common/boring hobbies: Crochet, reading, Peloton, anything Marvel universe.
I'd put it on my application. You are who you are. Own it.
Now that graduations have come and gone (Congratulations new physicians out there!) -- it's time for the new M4s to start prepping their ERAS applications. ERAS has typically opened on July 1 each year.

@InnovateEMS
I'm not vindictive like that. Things happen to people, life happens - perhaps they were in an accident or had sudden illness. I wouldn't do that to someone's career.
Pro tip: Calling the program coordinator multiple times a day to ask for the update on your application is a no no. Holistic review takes time and multiple people. Don’t make the PC your enemy by annoying them. It’s not a good look.

The worst part is that if anything happened to us while walking at night… the story would be painted as “a woman shouldn’t have been out walking late at night” and we would be blamed for our own lack of safety. It’s not a feeling. It’s reality.

Application Tip: Know the licensure rules for the states that you are applying to. Some require that the USMLE/COMLEX Steps/Levels be completed within a certain time frame or # of attempts in order to get a training license or a medical license. Apply wisely.

Folks in the SOAP - check your phone settings!! Make sure that you answer calls tomorrow — don’t let your phone screen out your chance for an interview!

I think it also has to do with how to pronounce your last name. If the first name is easier, people will default to it.
That being said… it’s also a female thing.
One of our former residents turned colleague is now a clerkship director at another hospital... it makes me smile every single time I see their name on a SLOE.

: If you are going to write a letter of intent or interest, you will garner more support if you actually address it to the program you are applying to and explain why that specific program interests you. Blanket generic ones are generally unhelpful.

@MichaelJKirsch
Been there… add an IV start kit, an actual IV, a syringe and a bottle of lidocaine to the mix.
Fun fact: TSA gave it all back to me— except my bottle of water.
A patient put me in the same category as one of our most respected hospitalists today on her “favorite doctor” list. I’m so freaking honored that I don’t know what to do with myself.
Congratulations to all who matched today. We are so proud of all of you.
To those whose day didn’t go as planned, we are all rooting for you. A setback is just the setup for the comeback. This does not mean that you won’t be an outstanding physician. You got this.
Unsolicited PD Advice: Please take Step 2 early enough for the score to post in the early interview season (or before it) if you had a step 1 fail. Particularly those who went from scored Step 1 to P/F Step 1.

Application tip: Preference signaling is new for EM this year. You get 5 tokens. I’ve heard some rumors about people trying to play the game and whatnot. Things to remember:

I understand where you are coming from with this. However, despite the introduction as doctor, I’ve had many patients say after their treatment is complete “well I never saw the doctor” and say the same when they file their complaint about not seeing the doctor.
Last night I got to accept a transfer from one of our 2021 residency grads. She’s so happy in her new gig and is rockstaring the mom/attending life. I’m so proud of her and so ridiculously happy for her. This is what we want to see as your PDs!!!!!
