My former paper,
@TheAthensNEWS
, is in shambles days after editorial spoke out against
@PublishingAdams
management running a scam ad in print, which caused at least one reader to lose money.
Here is the thread that was made before editors were ordered to have it removed.
This is the guy who refused to publish all letters from readers critical of his response to this, revoked editorial control from editors of their newspapers and authorized the ad department to manage their social media accounts.
All integrity has been tossed out the window.
This would all be a lot easier to swallow if they had, you know, a journalist covering this.
But instead they quashed a reporter’s efforts to do a story on it and uncritically published verbatim an attorney’s response.
Be sure to pick up a copy of
@TheAthensNEWS
today, for free, around town.
I have decided to step down as associate editor of the paper. My final day will be March 16.
I loved this paper and love the Athens community -- thanks for having me.
Some news: I'm leaving
@InsideNoVA
in the coming weeks to cover DC real estate for the Washington Business Journal (
@WBJonline
). Very excited to get started covering development in a city I love and call home.
DC Developers: please reach out with tips, story ideas, introductions
.
@CorinneColbert
, who was fired yesterday as editor of
@TheAthensNEWS
for speaking out against
@PublishingAdams
, has started fundraising for a nonprofit news venture Athens County Independent, which would be first of its kind in the area.
.
@TheAthensNEWS
published a letter this week graphically calling for the execution of a former president.
“Trump needs to face serious prison time. Better yet, he should twitch at the end of a rope.”
Some news: In the near future I'll be transitioning out of my role as
@rappnews
editor to become the Prince William County government reporter with
@InsideNoVA
. Very exciting!!
Worth noting here that APG prints
@ThePost
at its Athens facility. Pretty bold of a university-affiliated org to publicly denounce a hand that feeds them.
My former

colleagues launched a nonprofit newsroom to cover a region quickly becoming a news desert because of corporate consolidation.

The first issue of our newsletter dropped this morning! We are so excited to begin sharing substantive local news. Give it a read, subscribe, and share!
Since everyone was either fired or quit, both of Athens County’s newspapers will have no news reporters in 2 weeks if
@PublishingAdams
is unable to find replacements by then.
It often takes *months* to find replacements for these roles if there isn’t somebody internal to fill in
President Biden is speaking in Prince William County for the second time this year, this time at Prince William Forest park on Earth Day to announce funding for solar infrastructure, other climate goals.
He’s expected to take stage around 2:30 p.m.
This entire charade is being overseen by a former Trump campaign staffer who indicated to me in September they’re aiming to scare voters into participating in elections.
“The meeting saw multiple moments of tension, with Smith at one point raising his middle finger at City Council President Tony Dunfee.”
Nelsonville politics remain off the walls crazy.
"In a column he wrote defending the advertisements and the decision to continue running them, Mark Cohen, president of APG of Ohio, wrote that Federated Mint and National Mint and Treasury 'clearly mark ‘Paid Advertisement’ on all print ads.'
This is not the case."
A BBB official said given the volume of business the companies do nationwide, the number of complaints isn’t excessive.
Where the BBB does have ongoing concerns is with the ads themselves.
Federated Mint earned its F rating in part because of its ads.
The conundrum of reporting on power outages is that everybody is rationing phone and laptop battery. Are they really going to choose to read my reporting with such limited resources??
Biden takes the stage in Prince William County with a scathing allusion to Cleveland, Ohio, mentioning “toxic rivers” catching fire a century ago when climate regulations were near nonexistent.
BREAKING: The WSJ reports that Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard, the troubled publisher behind Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, which has been facing crisis over the last year following numerous reports of sexual misconduct and discrimination. A seismic gaming deal
!!!!!!!! In a shocking twist, Democrat Kenny Boddye broke with party lines saying he's not going to support the Gateway, arguing the project was underbaked. This could really change things. Stay for updates on a final vote which should come soon.
Derek Myers, a southeast Ohio blogger who faced wiretapping charges in Pike Co. for allegedly illegally recording court proceedings, apparently has been having a romp in D.C. working for - and allegedly betraying - admitted liar U.S. Rep. George Santos:
As an addendum: When I was a reporter in southeast Ohio, Myers used to publish wildly salacious stories that I couldn’t independently verify, that were filed under the names of “reporters” my colleagues could never verify the existence of. Here’s one
Journalism Job: InsideNova is hiring to replace me on the Prince William County government beat. You'd be covering mostly local news out of Virginia's second largest county in the Washington, D.C. suburbs.
Happy to answer any questions! DMs are open.
It’s going to be another late night here at the Prince William County government center.
70 are signed up to speak virtually on the Devlin Technology Park data center, with ~100 lined up in person. The DC tv stations came out for this one.
Background:
The Washington Post has a wonderful column today about my former paper, The Rappahannock News, and the power of hyperlocal news.
I love my new job, but the Rapp News is a special paper that you’d be hard pressed to find a replica elsewhere.
To honor black history month, Virginia’s first black female Lt. Governor gets attacked by unhinged liberals for calling a spade a spade. You don’t matter to the Democrat Party unless you walk, think, & talk like them.
To Virginia’s history maker
@winsomesears
, we honor you! ❤️
🚨1 big thing: Earlier this week, we announced
@axios
Local would launch in 🖐🏽 more cities.
That pushes us to 30 cities by the end of this year, which is exciting for many reasons. If you know me, then you understand one of these *really* excites me. 5 cities & job links👇🏽
I applaud the Prince William County planning staff’s recommendation for denying the rezoning applications for the PWDG and implore the PWC Planning Commission and PW BOCS to heed their recommendations and vote against the rezonings.
It happened.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors have been meeting concurrently (with a few brief recesses) for 24 hours over a proposal to build what would become the largest data center corridor in the world.
There is still some gas left in this meeting’s tank.
The state of Prince William County Data Center politics:
The board took a 5 minute recess after a speaker broke out in song and people in the atrium couldn’t hold in their applause.
New from me: Deshundra Jefferson, the new D leader of Virginia's second largest county who ousted two of the most powerful women in local politics through her rise, took office this week.
A deep-dive into her history
Big news for Prince William County politics insiders:
The board approved a rules change for meetings to adjourn at midnight under most circumstances. The changes comes after approval of a major data center corridor last year followed a 27+ hour meeting.
Reporters, rejoice.
I’m in need of a new car and moving from NoVa to DC in the coming months.
It’s maddening that a region tough on emissions can’t make electric charging more accessible + convenient because otherwise I’d totally invest in an EV.
New: Federal planners are in the early stages of crafting a monumental new concept to incorporate the Kennedy Center and the nearby Potomac River waterfront into the National Mall by eliminating a tangled maze of highways and ramps that inhibit the area.
Maybe it's just the honeymoon phase, but there is a marked change in tone of Prince William supervisors meetings since the swearing in of the new chair who pledged to embrace bipartisanship.
Members now converse, laugh and smile with one another. It wasn't like this last year.
Members of the Prince William BOS are keeping quiet about their stance on the divisive PW Digital Gateway data center plan after county planners, and commissioners appointed by the supervisors themselves, rejected the project.
Analysis:
This is the second cycle in a row Athens Ds’ candidate for this seat has had significant issues getting on the ballot. Last time it was a residency dispute that made it all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court.
BREAKING: Tanya Conrath (D) has filed an appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court challenging a recent decision by the Ohio Secretary of State that blocked her from challenging State Rep Jay Edwards (R-94) in the November election.

Closed captions are a common tool for people with auditory processing or hearing issues, conditions which have nothing to do with overall intelligence, neurologists say.
Local news' dirty little secret they don't tell you in j-school is the few big publishers still around are content to hire you on with mounds of student debt (degree required lol) at ~$45k/yr or less and let pay stagnate until you burnout, quit, and the next college grad bites.
Not a joke, but I’m genuinely curious if there’s a Guinness World Record on longest local government meeting.
Couldn’t find any evidence the record exists, but this has got to be a contender.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors' public hearing of the proposed PW Digital Gateway data center project is approaching the 24-hour mark on Wednesday morning as public comment from residents continues.
BREAKING: Following more than 27 concurrent hours of public hearings, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Wednesday approved the PW Digital Gateway, allowing construction of what’s expected to become the largest data center corridor in the world.
Story TK
Fringe example, but Cleveland’s rail system failed in 2016 during the Cavs NBA finals victory parade. I had friends trapped in the city since trains were backed up for hours because they couldn’t accommodate the size of crowds.
Trying to unpack the complicated legacy of former PW supervisor Jeanine Lawson, who says she's done running for office.
Allies say she's a stalwart. Opponents say she's a firebrand who helped nurture the data industry and drive up cost of living.
Youngkin keeps touting his proposed 15-week abortion ban. If Rs win the legislature and control Richmond, this is very likely to go through. That’s why national attention, and Fox News, is focused on Virginia.
A story idea about the infamous parking enforcement worker had been kicked around forever when I was a student but nobody ever went for it.
s/o to the post for doing in. Love it.
At the end of the day, being a parking enforcement officer is just a job for Stephanie Foster. "I work to feed and clothe my children," Foster said. "When I make people mad, I feel bad, but at the same time, I'm doing my job."

Pure, unadulterated joy is spending all afternoon on the phone with Apple support after losing in a data transfer to a new iPhone dozens of source contacts I've accumulated over the years
On this day last year,
@JayEdwardsOhio
issued his statement in response to the attacks on the Capitol, comparing it to demonstrations/riots during the 2020 BLM movement, and baselessly claiming some of the participants "were Antifa."
My (very old) Mac won’t survive without a constant charge, but Prince William officials won’t allow me to plug it in and sit in the audience because they say it created an isle tripping hazard.
Reporting from the floor in the back of chambers for the remainder of the day.
I’ll enter this “games coverage in legacy media” discourse once more to say I find it exceedingly odd that The Wall Street Journal’s internal style guide seems to call for video games to be referred to as “videogames” — no space — on all references, despite AP saying otherwise.
New: As data centers mushroom across the western reaches of Northern Virginia, environmentalists are warning of dire consequences for a local national jewel — Shenandoah National Park.
Really excited to see this
@FFRappVA
project go live.
Spanberger and Prince William County officials are holding a presser in Woodbridge to announce bipartisan legislation she introduced today to combat fentanyl overdoses. Bill would address the online sale of counterfeit pills and drugs laced with fentanyl.
The biggest issue with this entire fiasco is Mark Cohen’s blatant dishonesty — or at the very least severe truth-stretching — with both former employees and audience.
This was also his MO when I worked there and now it’s caused these institutions founded on integrity to crumble
The assessed values of D.C.'s largest office buildings has fallen by nearly $7 billion since 2020, costing the District about $143 million in property tax revenue — and it's only expected to get worse.
The Prince William County board has moved to raise taxes on data centers to the maximum rate allowable under state law in hopes of making good on the promise that data center revenue will offset the residential tax burden.
It happened.
