Bhai... This is a psychology academic conference. It's basic Muslims=backwards ideology masquerading as scientific research.
It speaks more to how ideology seeps into knowledge production and perpetuates de-contextualized violence.
Here are some thoughts on the "islamophobic poster" at the recent
@SPSPnews
conference. I highlight that this poster incident is a marker of systemic racialization of Muslims.
Please, read and forward to those who are thinking about what can be done.
*mask off*
You've annoyed and harmed so many people behind this facade of "peace", "love", & being against "hate". It would've been best if you would've been honest and up front about your intents.
🤣🥹🤣
Every year when I pay my dues, I convert societies into a masjid: 'Jama e masjid SPSP'.
Jokes apart,
@SPSPnews
this is what has been invited. What do we do next? How are we going to protect marginalized scholars?
@SPSPnews
The person who complained, is "decolonizing psych"? On what basis do you admit such people into your society? How and why is he in a PhD program? Are you a scientific society or a mosque?

You're a liar and a propagandist for reactionary+ regressive ideological movement. You have been intentionally mischaracterizing people--playing into racist tropes.
Take a second and reflect on your life's choices, man. Is this how you want to be remembered and known?
Your apology is not for me. Your apology is for yourself and your colleagues to whom you want to appeal a positive image of yourself.
You don't care about me or how you abused your white privilege and power to harm my future contribution in a white academy.
To quote ZA Bhutto, "Ordinarily, I would not have bothered to reply to the tissue of lies contained in this disgusting document. But the circumstances are not ordinary. A principle is involved ... the principle of the right to face the lie with the truth."
One can never take back what has already been said.
However, I do sincerely hope that my apology to
@NafsiatMahir
will be read by at least as many people as those who read my original tweet that has hurt him so much.
Without getting into ethics of expression/discourse, this is a clear example of normalizing racist violence.
Descriptive data masquerading as 'science'; not questioning how categories of terrorism, peace & statehood have historically perpetuated structural and colonial violence.
Disappointed to see this talk in the program at
#ISPP2024
. It normalizes the ongoing occupation and genocide in Palestine. How did this get accepted?
@PolPsyISPP
Solidarity with

@Gypsy_heart8
He tried to bully me and harass me last week. He exercised his racial privilege to get me fired and not have future job prospects because I talked about Israeli apartheid.
He is a dishonest man and is calling Palestinian solidarity protestors as terrorist-sympathizers.
Your claim to fame is harassing students, buddy.
I suggest you take a break or seek therapy to rationalize how your myopic patriotism failed to understand why people are speaking against a genocide and rallying against settler-colonial violence.
A non-Jewish man is attacking me, a Jewish man, for having a "mob".
To the investigators at
@Columbia
, just take note that I am responding to this PhD student's unprovoked attack of me.
(by the way, calling someone a "small man" just shows your toxic masculinity)
I do not feel hurt. You can not hurt me, Dr. Davidai.
I am a child of immigrants whose very existence is based on racialization of Muslims. And you dare to equate me with militants?
You continue to peddle lies. I know why: acknowledging what is said exposes your racist behavior
What kind of an organization creates rules to curb dissent about racialized genocidal violence and then publicly claim to protect a racist islamophobe?
It's called living up to the legacy of a field that supported eugenics and gendered essentialism.
WEIRD and imperialist.
@dbessner
It's a powerful construction of identities. Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities is relevant here.
Something which is interesting is the persistent appeal to modern sensibilities in Israeli social media.
Civilization/barbarism rhetoric, pink washing, believe women etc.
I fundamentally reject your apology and your behavior.
Please, I invite you to attend my talk at
@SPSPnews
so I can show you my humanity and my convictions; not just morally but also intellectually.
This is not an issue of an "accidental" behavior. What is seemingly coincidental is the logic of the system. This is one among many instances that represents the legacy of the discipline.
It's just that this instance was able to capture liberal sensibilities.
It's terrible that sh/t like this overshadows the issue at hand: an apartheid state is currently accelerating it's genocidal project.
Let's not be distracted; remember that the heart of the developing world is with the Palestinian people.
To quote ZA Bhutto, "Ordinarily, I would not have bothered to reply to the tissue of lies contained in this disgusting document. But the circumstances are not ordinary. A principle is involved ... the principle of the right to face the lie with the truth."
How does one go from doing useless whitestream research to being a shill for a deranged ideology?
You are a disingenuous small man. The way your mob is harassing
@jordancortesi

1/ I’m an Israeli academic. My community is too silent about the ongoing war in Gaza. Here is how I see things based on reading hundreds of articles and watching thousands of videos and images about the war. This tweet chain contains my conclusions as a sort of executive summary.
When decisions galvanize an egotistical & problematic person's racist (and especially boring) diatribes, it's obvious that so-called 'objective' policies are feeding into a certain ideological current in our moment: islamophobic genocide justification.
Earlier in the week I emailed
@SPSPnews
to inquire whether there were any updates on the code of conduct complaint that had been sent in regard to Shai Davidai's threatening, harassing behavior toward students. You can see how well that went-

I wonder if such imagery is going to be used as legal means to ban the party.
We are already seeing PTI social media team claiming that this is a 'setup.'
'normal science': imagining that empiricism functions (and the psyche exists) completely abstracted from sociocultural context and the material implications of racialized structures.
Implication is that the "preferred narrative" is whatever taken as 'just natural' & normative.
The abstract is fine and represents normal science. The response to the abstract is absurd. The abstract contains valuable data collected in a standard way from all appearances. Science is not valid or not based on it supporting your preferred narrative (thankfully)
Reminding people that it's incorrect to equate racist rhetoric with liberatory praxis and dissent.
Free speech fundamentalists have been successful at creating misinformation. Abstract equivalence akin to their mythical, WEIRD, & universalist science.
It’s false equivalence to compare the 2 posters ref’d here. One uses pseudoscience to perpetuate bigotry. The other disrupts white supremacy to call attention to ongoing horrors - a direct result of SPSP silencing & ignoring scholars of color who opposed their stance on 🇵🇸 1/3
Been over 4 months since 300+ psychologists sent an Open Letter calling

Dedicated to Byron Santangelo, who, along with Glenn Adams, co-taught one of the most important (and interesting) courses to be offered to PhD students at KU, called Decolonizing Knowledge.
This paper (& our critic envr psych research) wouldn't be possible without his guidance.
New paper by Lies & colleagues explores the topic of climate change engagement in the cultural context of US state parks.
We would also like to remember our long-term colleague & co-author, Byron Santangelo, who passed away on March 10, 2024.
While people are busy pulling sidesist BS, we are being targeted by fascists.
This is exactly what I mean when I say racialization of Muslim, Arabs, and Muslim-Arab-adjacent people from the white gaze. It's this situated anti-brown racialization by many Western observers.
This is why I study the intersection of different social oppressive forces. Calling me a terrorist supporter is a dogwhistle. To display my pic is an invite to more such harassment. “Social psych & politics are not as strange of bedfellows as we’d like to pretend.”- Dr. Marshburn
Unfortunate how American liberals continue to prioritize their own sensibilities & are tone deaf to their own complicity in enabling fascism.
Liberal ignorance is extermination of the savage 'other' whom they love to prop up on their uni websites as DEI props.

I feel ashamed to publicly post about my participation in the upcoming conference, amidst the on going violence.
Worst part is that the "academic habitus" tells me that it's wrong to even express it publicly.
The way you used "hate" to characterize disagreement and continue to misrepresent people... Only tells us that you're not accidentally ignorant (lack of knowledge) but intentionally harassing & harming people, all while stroking your own sense of self-worth. Shameful, professor.
Regardless of all your lies and your support for Hamas, if you think it's OK to target my children then you have a real problem.
You could have said "I hate Shai, but I agree that children are off limits"
Your hate blinds you.
A critical race psychology is possible; anything otherwise is complicity with violence.
Privileged to share the space with my fellow presenters. Thank you everyone who attended our talks.

Don't matter if your research supports a regressive agenda about re-education camps.
The solution isn't methodological rigor. The way forward is to question the ideological assumptions and implications.
Hey man... Thanks for demonstrating how faculty systematically abuse their powers and academia creates a hostile work environment for people for color. 🫰🫰🫰
It's best if we keep up with the times and recognize systemic racism. We are more aware now & not afraid of your racism
This is very dangerous. He continues to cry wolf, while leveraging support for his racial agenda.
Another example of colonial legacies of narratives being used to misconstrue moralities of the savage "other" and discipline them into the category of the human.

Something I like to highlight about this paper is that it is a 'cultural psychology' perspective on racism.
It doesn't essentialize racism, but makes a wider contribution to how we can think about the psyche as a sociohistorical product (i.e., the social psychological).
One of my all-time favorite papers to read and to teach RE how racism is systemic, embedded in culture, and how it is perpetuated through preferential selection. Looking forward to seeing how Grinnell students take to this paper in Cultural Psych!
We have a paper under review which investigates how conservation efforts (i.e., the cult of wilderness) is primarily a White right-wing concern. We argue it is more palliative and allows continuation of colonial/extractive engagement with non-human nature.
@Prof_FSultana
@GretaThunberg
Perfectly stated! Environmentalism is historically right-wing, so it's not a surprise. But the pathology has reached a new level.
Forum Peace Psychology is not interested in actually encouraging peace or they did not do their homework. Let's invite a disingenuous, racist, harmful, unsafe, and lying individual to talk about global perspectives.

The tragedy is that he has no idea what you mean by signified and signifier.
The neoliberalism of psychologists allows them to be proficient practitioners of a specific kind of 'knowledge' that is completely ignorant to materialist history and social theories, in general.
I'm trying not to give him attention but the wild thing about Shai Davidai is how radically he is undoing the relationship between signifier and signified.
He is sharing footage of campus and saying MY GOD LOOK. And then the camera cuts to one undergrad braiding another's hair.
As
@oikeios
has mentioned that the disparities in the knowledge factory are a site of a labor struggle.
Good luck being an immigrant or someone with familial obligations during grad school.
The so-called "anthropocene" is a racist negation of previous history (an omission of colonial plunder and violence) and current history (an omission of neo-colonial greenwashing, coloniality, and imperialism).
We live in times of anthropogenic climate crisis. Or do we? This essay shows how “humanity” is a thoroughly modern fetish, forged in the bloodbath of militarized accumulation and conquest after 1492: "Our

#worldecology
We are actively experiencing a fascistic moment.
So-called nice people are weaponizing their racial privilege in the center, to curb dissent against mostly racial minorities, and paying homage to the genocidal logic abroad.
Every single western “liberal” value has been deactivated to enable the genocide of Palestinians: Free speech is curtailed, protests are demonised, press is censored, public opinion is ignored, & international laws are written off.
Astonishing

"Many of us like to ask ourselves, “What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?”
The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now."

What happens when you present empirical evidence for the social construction of objectivity?
They ridicule your research and dismiss the racialization of the discipline(s).
The 'experts' on TV and social media are actively manufacturing consent for the swap.
It was the lack of pathos (i.e., he was weak) that led to this sentiment but not the genocidal policies. Tells you a lot about the Dems and their fascism.
It seems environmental psychology tends to be the 'whitest' field right after cognitive psych/sciences (wrt to representation).
Global North scholars and their Global North concerns are well represented in what's being researched and published.
When the official account of state is creating blatant misinformation/propaganda... And people ask us how is the genocide of Palestinians related to islamophobic fa$cism?
Failure to recognize this is systemic racism.
@SPSPnews
How multiculturalism went wrong?
Brussels Parliament invited a Muslim preacher who chose to recite parts of ‘Surah’ which explicitly calls for the killing and taking captive of Jews!
I sat at the kitchen table before sunrise this morning and rewrote some parts of this working paper. I will be giving a presentation on this next week and do more talks in the near future. Please feel free to email or DM me if you would like to read the draft when it is ready.
The tragedy of our 'positionality' is that we have to constantly justify our humanity to the privileged. We have to appeal to their moral sensibilities for our concerns to be considered valid.
One day the dust will settle and we'll look back at this as 1) a weaponizing of power & (human, understandable) grief, 2) a collection of deeply racist references. So what if chants in NYC mirror those in Arab countries? The rest of the world never has anything legitimate to say?
Disheartening to see non-serious academics consistently using racist dogwhistles (i.e., liberal white supremacist rhetoric) in service of imperialism. The problem is a lack of principles and a theory of history--something missing in their intellectual work as well.
“Canada must call for a ceasefire to end the killing of innocent civilians in Gaza immediately … When we stop seeing each other as human, when we stop believing that each life has value, this is when the seeds of genocide take hold.” Thank you
@theJagmeetSingh
for these words.
The newest FAFSA form is restricting students with non-US citizen (or recently naturalized) spouses & parents. They now require "contributor" consent with a SSN & US address.
This will stop me from demonstrating financial need for fellowships/funding that require reporting EFC.
My collaborators at
@cprgku
and I are going to be presenting research which attempts to 'denaturalize' the "natural" at SPSSI 2022; how 'just natural' ways of being and thinking about the world are embedded with violent fragments of colonial modernity (modernidad/colonialidad).
Liberals who continue to use words like "war" & "conflict" are rhetorically masking away the genocide and settler-colonial structure.
Beyond obscuring the reality, it represents liberal depravity and dehumanization of the 'other'--at the center and in Israeli society.
We can do better. Neither the unit of analysis (i.e., the aggregated psychological) nor the investigators are seemingly neutral. This abstract is a prime example of how scientific inquiry is ignorant to its own partiality--that is congruent with dominant narratives of power.
What does it say about our position as privileged knowledge producers & our silence when confronted with an ongoing structural annihilation and dispossession?
What should be the message of 'social psychology' be when the "social" is in itself violent?
I am boycotting the SPSP convention to be held in February 2024

Two months ago I asked Zionist academics on here why I haven’t heard them speak out against Shai. My comments were full of defenders of a man calling for arrest of students, calling them terrorists. We’re focused on the individual & not the silence & racism enabling him.

Despite its contradictions, this is a radical message.
“Why is it necessary to work more? Why is it necessary to produce more? No. The key to tomorrow, to the future, is not to produce more — for that is guaranteeing the death of the planet.”
Institutions and its actors like to tokenize our physical appearances so they don't feel guilty about images they put out on the internet.
When we remind them about historical materialist processes of racialization, they are eager to take away our claim to 'humanity'.
It is the kind of 'diversity' which allows power dynamics to remain unchallenged. BIPOC academics and early career scholars are often used as tokens. And if needed, those in charge remind them of the rules: accept the crumbles and smile or leave. Sadly, some are okay with this.
