Sounding launch in 40 mph sustained winds with higher gusts. Just measured a 58 mph gust (15 mins after launch). At Avon Park Airport, FL

Went to Wal-Mart in Norman today for the first time in two weeks. Everyone I saw was wearing a mask (except for one person with it draped around her chin 🙄). Two weeks ago I’d estimate 30% were wearing masks. Mask mandates work. Thank you

Now that it’s official, I am extremely fortunate and humbled to say that my NASA FINNEST proposal was selected! The proposal is titled “Satellite and Radar Remote Sensing of Tropical Cyclones to determine Microphysical and Precipitation Processes”.
Particularly concerned about this rainband training over the eastern side of Puerto Rico. These are infamous for producing excessive precipitation like in Harvey, Florence, and Sally.
Everybody meet Hadley! Hadley came right to me at the Moore animal shelter and I couldn’t put her down. She is about a year old and was at the shelter for over a month. She is the sweetest!
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy storm chasing on occasion. But seeing videos of kids in front of catastrophic damage - people who have lost everything, saying “dominating” really puts a bitter taste in my mouth. Do better. Gain some compassion and learn to empathize.
Even in an unfavorable environment, supercells can sustain themselves. Mid-level pressure deficit on the upshear flank of a rotating updraft induces a perturbation pressure gradient force, which results in sustained ascent.
Meteorology people:
How did you get good at coding? I’m essentially self-taught and I’m continually amazed by how efficient and good y’all are at programming. Any useful tips? As a programmer who is struggling, asking for a friend…
Just saying, footage taken from a short and safe distance away from a tornado is a lot more interesting than footage captured inside a tornado, which is really not very interesting. Can we please stop being stupid and putting your life at risk?
The isentropic ascent to the north and west of the cyclone, warm conveyor belt, and dry conveyor belt are pretty amazing with this storm. An excellent case for synoptic meteorology classrooms!
Denver breaking the daily record for 500 mb geopotential height! Observed 500 mb height on the 12Z sounding of 583 dam, breaking the record of 581 dam per SPC sounding climatology. This anomalous longwave ridge over the W half of the country is producing record high temperatures.
Life is kinda wild. I went to the University of Oklahoma in 2017 wanting to study dryline convection and CI. Then Harvey happened one month later and I ended up studying radar observations and precipitation processes in landfalling hurricanes…and I love it. Keep an open mind?
Why do some people feel the need to always bash NWS meteorologists/WFOs 😭? They do amazing work. It’s easy to point the finger when you haven’t been in the hot seat. That’s all I’ll say 😅
Probably an unpopular take, but as a student, virtual conferences have been essentially useless. I miss the in-person discussions and networking, and sitting (not walking in between conference rooms) for hours on end watching recordings is unrealistic. Better days are ahead!
I can't believe so many people think America is the best country in the world when these types of events have happened nearly every week for the past few decades.
Hoping this Omicron wave is the final hurrah for COVID before it becomes endemic. I'm a hardcore introvert and all this isolation is...difficult.

Quite the atmospheric river event ongoing in the Pacific Northwest. Integrated vapor transport ~800 kg/m/s and 1.41" of precipitable water observed on the Quillayute, WA sounding. This absolutely shatters the daily max of 1.03" per SPC sounding climatology.

PhD defense is tomorrow at 1 PM Central. DM me if you want a Zoom link and are interested in learning all about precipitation and microphysics in tropical cyclones using ground and space-borne radar!
Maybe a hot take: We should stop scaring people that are interested in pursuing a degree in meteorology. Yes, there is math, but as someone who used to struggle with math, there is help out there + eqns are only a small part of meteorology. How we apply them is what is important.

Not liking the 12Z Norman loaded gun sounding with 2600 J/Kg of MLCAPE and LCLs < 500 m. A potentially dangerous day ahead with multiple rounds of storms. Make sure to have multiple ways of receiving weather information/watches/warnings. Stay safe everyone.

This is such a stressful time of the semester, but try and remember these 3 things:
1. You have done this before and survived. Multiple times!
2. In less than two weeks you will feel much relief.
3. You wouldn't be where you are right now if you weren't capable of succeeding.
Why do we have the National Weather Service when we can get the 7 day forecast from our phone?
Why do we have cows when we can get our milk from Safeway?
Between starting my general exam on Monday, family issues, my state being on fire, the pandemic, my own work/grading, and all the political chaos, a friendly reminder to BREATHE and be kind to one another.
Two separate surges of horizontal convective rolls as mid to upper 70 dewpoints continue moving off the Gulf of Mexico. The cloud streets are a reflection of the ascending branch of the HCRs.

Update: He dropped a turd the size of the titanic in front of the vet. “This is the biggest turd I’ve seen come out of a cat. It’s like something you’d see come out of a Labrador”…then showed it to everyone in the vets office.
The strong warm advection can be seen by the “S” signature on radial velocity implying veering winds with height. Also seen on the 00Z MHX sounding. In addition to some neat gravity wave-like features near Cape Lookout!

A big shoutout and thank you to my advisor

Insurance not covering a prescription that costs ~$500 for preventative care? This country sucks. That’s 1/4 of my monthly paycheck which is already 1/2 taken up for rent. Again, this country sucks.
Pretty thrilled to start the week this way and honored/stoked to have worked on this with

,
@MesonetMan
, and many other awesome people. Precipitation/microphysics in Hurricane Laura.
Pictures alone don’t do the total solar eclipse justice. It was the combination of the rapid darkness, temperature drop, cool breeze, and the increasing sounds of insects around totality. Coolest thing ever.
These past couple of years have been a lot...finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel after a 1-1.5 year depressive episode and trying light therapy to help my SAD. Depression is real in grad school and should be more openly talked about.
I haven’t felt so relieved, motivated, and optimistic as I do now, especially in the last four years. This is what democracy is all about! Lots of work to do, but we are moving in the right direction.
My name is Noah+I am a PhD student in meteorology. I struggle with depression, anxiety, and OCD (not just a matter of everything having to be in order and "clean"). I was in an abusive relationship which is what led me to seek help. I have been going to counseling for 3 years now
Hi, my name is Gerardo, and I am a PhD student in Atmospheric Sciences. I also have moderate depression & reoccurring anxiety from childhood traumas on top of academic anxiety. And I finally started getting help for it not too long ago. It's never too late to seek help.
Kinda curious how all these high schoolers manage to drive > 1000 mi to chase any svr wx event? I had a passion for wx at that age and fully support it, but also had to work and didn't have a car.
We both tried to launch a couple windsondes...one popped, one got ripped out of our hands, and one basically went straight horizontally. The horizontal component of the wind is A LOT stronger than the vertical component of the wind.
Is it just me or weather observations are far more exciting than models? I like to see and understand what the atmosphere is currently doing rather than trying to predict it far out in advance. Also you need to do the former to do the latter...

Nice example of isentropic ascent occurring to the north and west of the low. Consistent with the conveyor belt model/warm conveyor belt wrapping around the cyclone.
